Pundit makes genuinely nonsensical claim about this Man United player

Jamie Redknapp’s punditry is often scoffed at for its outright lack of nuance or insight but the claim he made during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal trumps anything which has come before.

Romelu Lukaku had been forced off early in the second half with a foot problem to be replaced by Marcus Rashford.

Jose Mourinho then injected the pace of Anthony Martial and physical presence of Marouane Fellaini into what was a quickly wilting encounter, thereby using all of his substitutes.

But there was one man who did not grasp this. And it was Redknapp, who just happened to be providing in-game insight for Sky Sports – a internationally recognised, multi-million sports channel. Why, he thought, was Juan Mata not playing?

“Look at Juan Mata, just sat on the bench, not warming up,” he said. “I just don’t get it, I wonder what United fans must be thinking about that.”

This is no biggie if somebody in the stands says this. Sometimes we briefly lose track of how many substitutes a team uses in a game.

But as the one responsible for giving insight and opinions on the country’s biggest sporting network, at a game being watched by millions around the world, those watching – the people who pay £330 a year for the package – deserve more.

We do not receive much in terms of ‘insight’ – in other words, not just talking about what is in front of you and offering good soundbites, but talking about the game in a way that sheds light on the broader picture and stimulates thought, discussion, all of that – from Sky apart from Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

But, please, can we have accuracy at the very least?

Paul Pogba shows his class following late win over Arsenal with this gesture

Paul Pogba went straight over to Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles to congratulate him on his performance and dispense some words of wisdom following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsene Wenger’s side on Sunday.

The 20-year-old had performed impressively in the middle of the park, handling the ball with maturity beyond his years and brining impetus through the middle.

His opposite number had put Man United ahead early on, only for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to equalise in a mundane second half which saw Marouane Fellaini head home a stoppage time winner.

And Pogba, instead of celebrating at the full time whistle, immediately went over to Maitland-Niles, who was handed the ‘Man of the Match’ award by Sky Sports.

Maitland-Niles typified a plucky, energetic Arsenal performance – albeit without any bite aside from Mkhitaryan’s precise strike – more than any other player on the pitch. He was, along with other youngsters like Reiss Nelson and Konstantinos Mavropanos, making the most of the occasion, which was more about what was happening off the pitch than on it.

The game as a result took up a strange dynamic: bumbling along rather than motoring, with United ambling around the pitch – their focus firmly on May 19 – against a well drilled group of youngsters and fringe players, until forced into action during the last ten minutes or so.

Those Roy Keane and Patrick Viera days could not have felt further away.

Napoli reportedly plot managerial swap deal with Chelsea

According to reports from Italy, Napoli are interested in appointing Antonio Conte as their new manager this summer if Maurizio Sarri opts to join Chelsea.

It’s claimed by Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, as cited by Football Italia, that a sensational ‘swap’ deal could occur in the summer as Chelsea prepare to up their interest in Sarri.

The Napoli boss has performed well in Serie A over the last two seasons and it seems with Conte set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, Sarri is a target for the Blues.

Gabriele Maltinti/Getty Images Sport

However, the Chelsea boss could well walk into a new role, filling the potential void which Sarri may leave by departing Napoli.

The Serie A title-chasers have been linked with a number of different managers as they make contingency plans in preparations for Sarri’s potential departure, and it seems Conte heads up this managerial shortlist.

It’s stated that Conte would be open to a return to management in Italy, indicating that a shock move to Napoli is not out of the question yet.

Arsene Wenger reacts to "very classy" gesture from Manchester United

Arsene Wenger has expressed his gratitude to Manchester United for what was a classy reception as the Frenchman made his last Old Trafford appearance as Arsenal manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho presented Wenger, who was met with a standing ovation from supporters, with a vase before the game commemorating his unprecedented achievements in 22 years at Arsenal.

He received further applause when he came out for the second half before Man United fans, soon after Marouane Fellaini‘s late winner, jokingly chimed: “Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay”.

Speaking at a press conference at Old Trafford for the last time as Arsenal manager, Wenger was notably touched by the reception United had given him.

“That shows you once you’re not a danger any more people love you,” he said.

“I’m thankful to Man United because they had a nice gesture before the game and it’s the first time I get a trophy before the game, so that’s new. It was very classy from them.”

“I don’t know [what was on the vase], I haven’t looked at it, I had no time, it was just before the kick-off.

“Now I just want to go and have a glass with Sir Alex because he always has good wine.”

Sunday’s game was less about the two teams on the pitch – the fact that United secured Champions League football and ensured, mathematically, that Arsenal finished outside the top four places by winning hardly seemed to matter – and more about the history Wenger has at this stadium.

No opposition manager has as many dramatic tales of this ground as the Frenchman: that Marc Overmars goal, winning the Premier League at Old Trafford, losing 6-1 and 8-2, the Battle of Old Trafford, being banished to the stands to produce one of the iconic photos in modern football, the Battle of the Buffet, losing some more.

Sitting in the stands at Old Trafford, watching the wily old figure of Wenger makes his way down to the dugout, I couldn’t help but feel immense warmth to him on a human level.

Forget rivalries, forget tactics, forget past exchanges, forget football altogether: this was a man who embodied class and a love for the beatific potential of this sport – a man who, at the bottom of it all, saw football as less about points or statistics and more about people coming together in unison and friendship.

He paid the price for that in results. But I will always, always respect him for staying loyal to that principle for 22 years. The English game is without doubt better off because of it.

Jose Mourinho takes swipe at this Premier League rival manager

Jose Mourinho has aimed a subtle dig at Pep Guardiola for claiming that the Premier League title was the most important trophy to win.

Manchester City were confirmed as champions following Manchester United’s defeat to West Bromwich Albion earlier this month and are likely to become the first Premier League side to break 100 points in a single season.

Man United will have to settle for second spot this time around but could yet finish this season with the FA Cup to their name after dismissing Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final.

And the 55-year-old, when asked by a Spanish journalist about Guardiola’s claim that the Premier League was the best trophy to win, delivered a typically Mourinho-esque quip in response.

“I think we always say the most important one is the one that we win,” he said.

“So when I won the Champions League the Champions League was the most important trophy for me, when I won the leagues, the leagues were more most important for me. And when I win nothing I say that winning is not important.”

In any country, the league – a 38 game marathon played over a nine topsy turvy months – is the best empirical measure of superiority. That cannot be questioned.

At the same time, however, to suggest that success can only be measured in titles simply doesn’t account for the nuance of a long, ever oscillating season. In the top five leagues in Europe, comprising of nearly 100 teams, nobody is going to claim that only five – Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain, probably Juventus, Man City – have enjoyed a successful season.

For United, finishing with 86 points and an FA Cup will not be perfect, but nobody would call it underwhelming either.

Man United player reveals dressing room atmosphere following Arsenal win

Juan Mata has expressed his delight at Manchester United’s stoppage time win over Arsenal on Sunday.

Both sides played out something of a languid contest, with focus firmly on respective cup competitions giving the whole affair – Arsene Wenger’s last match at Old Trafford as Arsenal manager – an exhibition match type of feel.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan cancelled out Paul Pogba’s early goal in the second half before Marouane Fellaini, introduced along with the bright Anthony Martial, headed home a winner with 91 minutes gone to ensure Man United mathematically qualified for the Champions League next season.

And Mata, writing in his weekly blog, was pleased to see Man United claim all three points, while also paying tribute to Wenger and Mkhitaryan.

“April is coming to an end, and so is this season,” he wrote. “It’s still soon to make an analysis of the year, but after games like this Sunday’s at Old Trafford you can’t help thinking that there are only four more games to play and that the end of the season is very close. We want to finish in the best possible way.”

“The win against Arsenal in stoppage time takes us a little bit closer to secure the second place, which is our goal since we knew that we couldn’t mathematically win the Premiership.

“These three points were very good for us, in a game that was the last one of Arsène Wenger as the Arsenal manager at Old Trafford. In 22 seasons he’s been through everything in this stadium and I think that at the end the football world is showing to him the affection that he deserves.

“A lot of things have changed with him in the Premier League, he was an innovator and it’s fair to admit that he has contributed so many things to English football, and to thank him for that.

“Also, in this game I could see Mkhitaryan again, to whom I wish the best. He scored a good goal that he didn’t celebrate, and Old Trafford also showed its affection to him :-).”

It is becoming something of a theme for United this season that the occasion – the context of the game – has to be a certain way before they start to perform.

Against Sevilla they only started playing when they absolutely had to. The same can be said of their trip to the Ethiad a few weeks ago. Wins over Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently Arsenal were all only initiated after United had been handed a bloody nose.

Put simply, this team – while unquestionably more resilient and efficient than last year – continues to lack initiative, a sense of natural thrust. Once again, against Arsenal’s reserves, we had to wait until a frenzied final ten minutes to see this team let the shackles off.

Every supporter will be desperate to see Mourinho address this ahead of his third season at Old Trafford.

Chelsea could require Champions League football to land Napoli defender this summer

Chelsea’s chances of signing Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli this summer could rest on whether or not they qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Blues are currently chasing the fourth place in the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur currently leading them in the race to finish in the Champions League qualification spots.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Koulibaly in recent times and it seems a summer move is on the agenda. The player’s agent Bruno Satin has been discussing what the future may hold for his client.

Francesco Pecoraro/Getty Images Sport

Satin, as quoted by talkSPORT, refused to rule out a move away for Koulibaly this summer but did indicate that his client is looking to play Champions League football again next term, which Chelsea may be unable to provide.

It’s important to understand how the season will end because important players want to play the Champions League. Is Koulibaly worth €100m (£89m)? The market and [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis will decide because Kalidou has no release clause.

The president may also decide to keep him because he considers him important for the team. I don’t know if these three games will be his last for Napoli because there have been offers every year, but Koulibaly has always ended up staying, so he won’t necessarily leave. It’s difficult to make predictions now.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent times, with Chelsea joined by both Arsenal and Manchester United in their interest.

AC Milan eyeing summer swoop for Chelsea attacker

AC Milan have reportedly joined the race to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

A number of clubs have been linked with a move for the Spain international ahead of the upcoming window and it seems Milan are the latest side to express an interest in the forward.

It has been a season of mixed fortunes for Morata at Stamford Bridge. After a bright start in the Premier League, a combination of poor form and injury woes have hindered his progress and it seems an early exit from the club is not out of the question.

Michael Regan/Getty Images Sport

According to claims from Tuttosport, as cited by Calciomercato, Serie A giants Milan will aim to recruit the former Real Madrid striker after they missed out on his signature last summer.

However, it seems they will not be alone in their interest. Juventus are named as the leading party in the race to land Morata in the summer transfer window.

Man Utd fans will be happy to hear this Lukaku injury update

Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku’s injury is not as bad as fans may have initially feared with signs pointing to a less complicated injury.

The Belgian international asked to be substituted during the match against Arsenal and supporters were worried it could mean he would miss the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Lukaku didn’t manage to score against the Gunners though he did have a decent performance in a game that saw Marouane Fellaini score the winner in injury time.

United weren’t at their best but cruised past the London club 2-1 with Paul Pogba grabbing the opener and Henrikh Mkhitaryan equalising for his side.

Romelu though didn’t see out the match unfortunately and because of his history of rarely asking to come off, fans thought the worst when it happened.

Initial diagnoses normally indicate the extent of an injury so hopefully it’s correct in assessing that Romelu Lukaku will be fit for the FA Cup final.

The match at Wembley against the Blues won’t happen for a little over two weeks and so the former Everton man could just make it back in time.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial now both have an opportunity to impress in his absence and could throw their name in the hat for the final.

Jose Mourinho: This is why I didn't meet Arsene Wenger after the game

Jose Mourinho has noted that he didn’t meet Arsene Wenger after Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, emphasising that the focus ought to be on the “real rivalry” between the Frenchman and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Wenger saw his final game at Old Trafford as Arsenal boss decided by an injury time Marouane Fellaini header to round off a decidedly flat encounter.

Prior to the game, Ferguson presented Wenger with an award recognising his services to Arsenal in what was an admirable display of class from Man United.

And Mourinho, speaking after the game, stressed that Sunday was not about him and Wenger as much as it was about the rivalries the Arsenal manager had with Ferguson at Old Trafford for so many years.

“No [I will not see him], not after the game,” he said.

“Monday off tomorrow, I go to London, he has a big match waiting for him [against Atletico Madrid], but we were [engaging] a little bit before the game and I’m happy the class my club showed towards him.”

“And I am happy that when I told the club I would like Sir Alex to present the award, not me, because Sir Alex was his real rival, especially at Manchester United.

“My story with Mr Wenger in United is just a couple of years and I hope that I play against him again, I hope that can happen if not in the Premier League, who knows. We [may] have still a big match waiting for us.”

Wenger stood there next to Ferguson, once a fierce rival whose name he couldn’t even mention at times and now a firm friend with whom he even has dinner, looking genuinely happy.

He beckoned over Mourinho, purposely standing back to let the pair share the moment, and over the Portuguese came, somewhat reluctantly, before sharing what was almost a hug with Wenger. A few kind words were exchanged between the pair. The whole thing felt genuinely quite heartfelt, as if an era of brutal competition was being looked back on fondly by three wise old sages.

For someone who grew up watching these three spill blood to be the very best in the country, often hitting out at the other two in the process, it was a touching moment – a chance for the watching world to observe the trio together, all unique in the way they brought about success, and recognise how profound their impact on this division has been.

Chelsea ready to battle London rivals for Serie A midfielder

Chelsea are preparing to rival Arsenal for the signature of in-demand Atalanta midfielder Bryan Cristante in the summer.

Sky Sports report that the Blues, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are all interested in signing the Italian.

The centre-midfielder was on loan at the Serie A side to start the season but his deal was made permanent this year, following a brilliant start.

Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images Sport

Atalanta currently sit sixth in the league and Cristante has contributed massively to that, scoring nine goals in 32 appearances. The 23-year-old even scored the equaliser as they came back from two down to draw 2-2 with Juventus back in October.

Most notably for English fans, he scored in both ties against Everton in this season’s Europa League including a double in the 5-1 victory at Goodison Park.

Cristante’s performances led to him being called up to the Italian national team for the first time in October, making his debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Macedonia.

Roman Abramovich likes his side to invest in players and make profit, so the £30 million-rated player would be a good investment for a long period of time if his performances stay at this high level.

Antonio Conte explains exactly why Chelsea have struggled this season

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has admitted that a lack of goals could cost them a place in next year’s Champions League.

The Evening Standard reports the Italian believes Chelsea have not been ruthless enough in front of goal this season:

Our first problem this season is that we have not been so clinical. If you want to win, you have to score. If you don’t take your chances, the result stays in the balance until the end.

Chelsea have scored 60 Premier League goals this season, which is the sixth highest tally in the division and a long way behind Manchester City who boast an impressive 102 goals.

Eden Hazard is the Blues’ top scorer with 12 league goals, followed by Alvaro Morata with 11 and Marcos Alonso with six.

Stu Forster/Getty Images Sport

Going into the final three matches the Blues are two points behind London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, although Spurs have a superior goal difference.

In regards to their lack of ruthlessness, Conte added:

I remember, for example, our most recent game against West Ham, we dropped two points of vital importance for us. We were winning the game and we created a lot of chances to score but we kept the result at only 1-0 and at the end they scored and drew.

Conte joined Chelsea in the summer of 2016 having led to Italy to the quarter-finals of the Euros, and brought immediate success as the club won the Premier League in his first season.

However, the disappointing defence of their title has lead to murmurs of discontent this campaign, and the Italian has been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit.

Wenger Reveals What He Thought Of Mavropanos' Debut

Wenger Reveals What He Thought Of Mavropanos’ Debut

Arsene Wenger has revealed what he thought of Konstantinos Mavropanos’ debut in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday (via Arsenal.com).

It was a disappointing end to what was a relatively pleasing match for Arsenal as Marouane Fellaini headed a last-minute winner for Manchester United.

The 2-1 defeat was a better result than many Arsenal fans expected but given the way the match went, the Gunners came away discouraged.

Konstantinos Mavropanos made his debut at Old Trafford and put in a fine performance for the Gunners. Now, Arsene Wenger has given his thoughts on the youngster’s match.

“Mavropanos, in training he has shown top quality but then you always have a question mark as long as you don’t see that under pressure in a big game,” Wenger said after the match.

“Until that, you don’t know. The big players do better in the competition than in training, they make a career, the others

“We have many players at our level who do less well in competition than in training. That was the question mark and I think he did well. He surprised everybody by his quality today.”

It was good to see Konstantinos Mavropanos making such an impressive first appearance for the club. He’s clearly a talented young player and will be hoping that more first-team opportunities head his way in the coming weeks and years.

"He's very important": Man United player gives verdict on Marouane Fellaini

Victor Lindelof has hailed the ‘very important’ role Marouane Fellaini has at Manchester United following the Belgian’s injury time winner against Arsenal on Sunday.

The midfielder has been restricted to just three starts since September due to injury and is expected to leave Old Trafford once his contract expires in June.

But his towering header, which came following a five minute period of aerial bombardment, served to remind supporters of just what Fellaini – who pointed to the badge after scoring – can offer this Man United team.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Lindelof explained how the threat of Fellaini towards the end of the game was crucial.

“He’s a strong player and is very important for us, especially at the end of the game when we have a lot of the ball and we attack,” he said.

“He gives us some more options, he can go into the box and he’s very dangerous in there, so he’s a very important player for us.”

Mourinho has always admired and wanted to use Fellaini’s warrior-like spirit, but he has more pertinently cherished the uniqueness of his attacking threat.

For a manager who will never adopt the zip and zeal with which Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp’s teams play, the presence of a player whose style is so unorthodox – so awkward for opponents, so physically invasive – is vital for a man who prefers situational pragmatism, judging games in the moment, over an overarching plan.

And in a game that for the most part felt like an exhibition match, drifting inexorably towards a mundane draw, Mourinho used the 30-year-old to devastating effect, combining the slick wing play of Anthony Martial and crosses from Ashley Young with Fellaini’s boisterous presence in the box.

It changed the mood of the game, forced Arsenal into desperation, and ultimately dealt them a heavy blow in Fergie time.

Report: Search For New Manager Moves On As Board Move Away From Bookies' Favourite

Report: Search For New Manager Moves On As Board Move Away From Bookies’ Favourite

Arsenal’s search for a new manager has reportedly moved away from Luis Enrique with the Arsenal board apparently unimpressed with the Spaniard (via The Times).

It’s the big debate of the day amongst Arsenal fans as the club looks to appoint the right new manager.

The discussion over who should replace Arsene Wenger is dominating talk around the club today and it seems that there has been some movement on that front.

Reports suggest that the club has moved on from the man who is reportedly a frontrunner for the position, Luis Enrique.

The former FC Barcelona boss is apparently a polarising figure amongst the players he has managed and the clubs he has worked for.

His track record is obviously impressive after he won the treble with FC Barcelona in his first season at the club back in 2014-15.

Luis Enrique is reportedly keen on the role but has also been linked with a move to Chelsea amidst the doubts over Antonio Conte. The Spaniard is clearly a talented manager and would represent a hugely different managerial style to Arsene Wenger. It’s unclear whether or not that is a good thing.

Chelsea star issues rallying cry with top four hopes still alive

Cesc Fabregas will not be giving up on finishing in the top four this season as they continue to chase Spurs for Champions League qualification.

Over the weekend Chelsea beat a well-organised Swansea side away from home, with Fabregas scoring the winner in the 1-0 win and cutting the gap to Spurs to two points.

Spurs take on Watford at Wembley on Monday night, which is their game in hand over Chelsea. If Spurs come out of this game with a win they will be five points clear of Chelsea with three games remaining.

Fabregas told ESPN that the race is not over just yet.

We won, so they will probably feel that they need to do well and not drop points anymore. But the advantage is for them because it’s not up to us.

Even if we win every game and they do well, we will not be in the Champions League next year, so that’s why I would prefer to be in their position. We just have to keep on winning, but they obviously have the advantage because they are on top.

Liverpool, who look set to make this year’s Champions League final slipped up at home on Saturday against relegation-threatened Stoke City.

Chelsea sit six points behind Liverpool, but they have a game in hand and the Reds have to travel to Stamford Bridge this weekend in a huge game in the race for the top four.

We have been winning games, not comfortably, and that is the most important thing. Sometimes when you are in a dip of form and you are struggling to get points, to win whatever it takes, to do it is always positive.

I think we’ve been doing well that way, because every team we play is fighting for something. You could see that with Swansea and it will be the same when Huddersfield come to Stamford Bridge. We have had to dig in in certain moments and we are ready to do that.

The goal against Swansea at the weekend was the Spaniard’s first goal in the league since August.

The Blues will be looking to keep the pressure on Spurs and Liverpool to save a poor season for Conte and his men. A top-four finish and an FA Cup final win would certainly help towards saving the season and maybe even Conte’s job.

Blow for Chelsea and United as manager confirms key summer target will not leave

Chelsea and Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Gareth Bale, with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane claiming the player will not be sold this summer.

The Daily Star are reporting the Frenchman is confident that neither Bale or Karim Benzema will leave the Bernebau despite both being linked with moves in recent times.

Bale has reportedly fallen out with his manager over his lack of playing time this season, having made 22 La Liga appearances this campaign, scoring 11 times.

Benzema has found his place in the squad under threat after failing to find the back of the net on a consistent basis this season.

In a recent press conference, Zidane said:

We need them [Bale and Benzema] and I’ll do everything possible so that they’re not affected by what’s been said outside. They’ll stay with us.

I know all our players want to play, but it isn’t possible. The message is for everyone, not just Bale and Benzema, that we’re sticking together because there’s a month left of the season and we have it all to do.

Los Blancos have endured a disappointing season, finding themselves third in the La Liga rankings and 15 points behind leaders Barcelona with four games to play.

However, they do still have a chance of winning the Champions League and take a 2-1 lead into their semi-final second leg with Bayern Munich this week.

Pundit compares Chelsea youngster to World Cup winner after stunning performance

Tony Cascarino believes that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is already as good as £40m signing Tiemoue Bakayoko and will be a Chelsea first-teamer next season.

The former Chelsea striker also compared the midfielder to another former Blue, Michael Ballack while speaking on TalkSPORT.

Loftus-Cheek has impressed on loan at Crystal Palace this season and got himself on the scoresheet as the Eagles swept aside Leicester City 5-0 on Saturday.

The 22 -year-old has been on the books at Stamford Bridge since the age of eight, and Cascarino feels he has similar attributes to ex-German international Ballack:

He’s Michael Ballack of the midfield. He can be an attacker, he shields the ball brilliantly, and for Wilf [Zaha’s] goal… his tight control in possession – he does it brilliantly. You cannot ignore him.

Loftus-Cheek will be hopeful of being a first-team regular at Chelsea next season, and Cascarino wrote in his Times column that the Englishman is already better than £40m signing Tiemoue Bakayoko:

He could be in the Chelsea team now instead of Tiemoue Bakayoko — he is as good as the Frenchman signed for £40 million — and I think he would be a good midfield partner for N’Golo Kante.

Loftus-Cheek made his senior England debut last November and was given the Man of the Match award as they played out a stalemate with Germany.

Chelsea target free to leave this summer if club meet €100m asking price

Inter are reportedly ready to sell Chelsea and Manchester United target Mauro Icardi if a club meets their €100 million asking price.

Corriere della Sera, as cited on Calcio Mercato, reports that a deal could be done if a suitable offer is made this summer.

Inter are facing a battle to finish inside the Champions League spots this season. Failure to do so may force their hand in the summer transfer market, with high-profile departures likely.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the free-scoring striker as a possible replacement for Alvaro Morata for some time.

Reports of a €63 million offer have emerged recently, but it is yet to be seen how concrete Chelsea’s interest is.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the striker to provide competition for Romelu Lukaku.

Icardi has been a focal point in Inter’s sides in recent years but is often linked with moves away from the San Siro.

Marouane Fellaini: I had this aim when I came off the bench against Arsenal

Marouane Fellaini has admitted he was targeting a winning goal when he came off the substitutes bench against Arsenal.

The Belgian got just that, heading in, via a deflection, to win the game for Manchester United in the 91st minute.

Paul Pogba had put the Reds in front early in the first half and Man United dominated proceedings from then until half-time, but lacked the killer instinct that could have seen them put two or three past the visitors in that opening period.

Former-Red Henrikh Mkhitaryan levelled after a series of defensive errors and Fellaini’s goal was vital, securing the three points and thus United’s place in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Fellaini replaced Ander Herrera in the second-half, and said that scoring was always his aim as soon as he came on the pitch.

“It’s good to score in Old Trafford, a late goal against a good team, we have the three points, that’s the most important thing,” Fellaini said.

“I wanted to do that. It was difficult but it was good.”

Fellaini called on his teammates to continue winning until the end of the season despite qualifying for Europe’s elite club competition already.

“We’re sure to participate in the Champions League. Let’s continue,” he added.

The 30-year-old has been look set to leave the club this summer, with no time remaining on his contract and a number of clubs interested in increasing his wages and giving him a huge signing on fee.

However, manager Jose Mourinho spoke with confidence after Sunday’s game, claiming that a new deal for Fellaini is “nearly there”. Though he has been scapegoated at times, and rightly blamed at others, for some of United’s recent woes, he does often pop up with the all important goal.

Jose Mourinho explains why he's very impressed with this Man United player

Jose Mourinho has revealed why he chose to bring on Marouane Fellaini against Arsenal.

The Belgian ultimately scored the winner in the 91st-minute for the Reds, heading home after coming on as a second-half substitute for Ander Herrera.

He had been involved in a chance just minutes earlier when his header struck back off the post and Marcus Rashford tapped home, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Mourinho said Fellaini came on for Manchester United to exploit a change from Arsenal in terms of their defensive block.

“I knew they were going to drop the block,” Mourinho said. “I felt we needed a second presence.

“He scored a beautiful goal.”

The midfielder rose above three players marking him and directed his header into the corner.

“It’s a goal that mathematically qualifies us for the Champions League,” Mourinho added.

Fellaini has changed a game for Man United once again. For all his faults, his effectiveness is undoubted. He had a key role in the UEFA Europa League run last season, when United won the tournament, and has been key in EFL Cup and FA Cup victories in the last two seasons.

His contract expires in the summer but after months of assumptions that the 30-year-old would reject a new deal at the club in favour of a new challenge, Mourinho indicated on Sunday evening that Fellaini looks set to put pen to paper on a new deal. He celebrated by grabbing the United crest on his shirt.

Jose Mourinho reveals how he changed his tactics against Arsenal

Manchester United changed their tactics to exploit a weak Arsenal side, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed.

Marouane Fellaini headed home the winner in the 91st minute after a generally dominant performance in which the Reds should have gone into the second-half with a far greater lead.

Paul Pogba had put the Reds in front in a very dominant first-half in which Arsenal were limited to only a couple of chances and United were constantly around their penalty area.

Mourinho was forced into changes after Arsenal grabbed a goal back in the second half after a collection of poor defensive errors.

“We changed our approach,” Mourinho said of his tactics for the game.

The Portuguese later brought on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for Man United, as well as the winning goalscorer Fellaini. All three substitutions were quite early on.

Martial, in particular, dragged the visiting defence all over the place.

“We gave more width,” the United boss continued.

“We kill the Champions League story, we’re there. I think we still need four points to finish second which is the position we want.”

United confirmed a top four spot well before the end of the season with Sunday’s victory. Of course, the target remains finishing second and winning the FA Cup, with Chelsea in the final at Wembley in May.

In the last couple of months, United have now beaten all of their top six opponents, with comeback victories against Man City and Chelsea and a late winner against Arsenal as well as dominant performances against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

It’s been a fantastic couple of months in terms of consistency in big games, only let down by stupid slip-ups against smaller opposition, such as West Brom.

Chelsea striker wanted in €70m deal by Bayern Munich and PSG

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata reportedly wants to leave the club this summer, with a number of clubs across Europe queuing up to secure his signature.

It’s claimed by Italian news outlet Tuttosport, as cited by Calciomercato, that the Spaniard is keen to leave Stamford Bridge after just a season in English football after growing unhappy at Chelsea.

After a blistering start to life with the Blues, Morata has struggled for both fitness and form. The Spain international’s shortcomings in the middle of the campaign prompted Chelsea to sign Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud to provide another source of goals.

Despite his underwhelming campaign, though, it seems Morata will not be sold for a cut-price deal. It is, in fact, claimed that both Bayern Munich and PSG would be willing to splash €70 million on a deal to recruit Morata.

Juventus have long been linked with a move for their former player but it’s thought that financial limitations would price them out of a deal for the former Real Madrid striker.

It’s stated by Tuttosport that Morata’s preferred destination is Serie A, indicating that a move back to Juve could be plausible. Although, they may simply be unable to meet Chelsea’s demands, along with Morata’s in terms of wages.

Man Utd fans react to Fellaini's performance vs Arsenal

Manchester United fans expressed their delight after Marouane Fellaini‘s performance vs Arsenal that saw him grab the winner.

The Belgian international came off the bench to grab his side all three points after scoring a header in injury time to send off Arsene Wenger in spectacular fashion.

Fellaini has often been slated by fans with some doubting his quality but they’ll certainly all be celebrating his goal as United secured three important points for the race for second place.

The former Everton man’s contract runs out in the summer and it appears he’s on his way out of Old Trafford with some Turkish clubs interested in his signature.

However, Jose Mourinho had admitted after the match that he hopes Marouane remains at the club so perhaps supporters will see more of him in the future.

Marouane Fellaini has proven himself to be a pretty useful back-up option for his manager on multiple occasions so there’s no surprise he’s beloved to the Manchester United boss.

The tenacious midfielder has proven he’s passionate and willing to fight as well as being a standout soldier for Mourinho.

No matter what is asked of Fellaini he’s happy to fulfil that role and that kind of loyalty is pretty priceless in modern football.

"I want him to stay!": Mourinho confirms he wants this player at Manchester United

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he wants Marouane Fellaini to stay amidst reports of the player leaving the club for free this summer.

The Belgian international’s contract runs out at the end of the current Premier League campaign and it appeared he was set to leave Old Trafford.

Turkish clubs and even PSG were marked as potential destinations but Mourinho has at least made it clear of his own intentions for Fellaini.

The former Everton man was often made the scapegoat for United in their more disappointing days but the Portuguese manager clearly values him.

It’s fair to say Jose has gotten the best out of him, more so than Louis van Gaal or even David Moyes did for that matter.

The former Real Madrid manager said: “I think so. I think a player that grabs the crest after scoring is telling clearly that he wants to stay. I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay, I think he will stay, it is nearly there.”

Whether a deal can be struck with the club or not is yet to be seen though it’s unclear what’s holding up the talks with the player.

Perhaps it’s Marouane Fellaini‘s salary that’s in doubt or his agent is causing trouble though the likelihood is that he may be unhappy with his role at Manchester United.

Often used as a rotational option or as Jose Mourinho’s backup plan, it could be that the tenacious midfielder wants promise of regular football.

Pogba explains how Man Utd beat Arsenal in Wenger farewell

Paul Pogba has explained how Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-1 by keeping themselves in the opposition half and creating chances.

The Frenchman starred in the clash vs the Gunners with it being Arsene Wenger’s final match at Old Trafford and it’s fair to say he had a lot to do with the three points.

Pogba grabbed the opener for United as he found himself in the opposition box pouncing on some good overall play from Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku.

The former Juventus man featured in his preferred role as part of a midfield trio so it was no surprise to see him perform at a high level.

Marouane Fellaini was the man to grab the winner in injury time but it was Paul who should make the headlines in tomorrow’s newspapers.

Manchester United fans will certainly be delighted to hear Paul Pogba feels good as reports linked him with a move away from the club.

Real Madrid and PSG were said to be interested in the talented midfielder but it appears that the rumours were all false.

Pogba celebrated his goalscoring performance vs Manchester City by pointing to the United badge and he also asked fans to dismiss any speculation from the media.

Man Utd fans react to Pogba's performance vs Arsenal

Manchester United fans were certainly pleased with Paul Pogba following his performance vs Arsenal which saw him grab the opening goal.

Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku also had a hand in the Frenchman’s first goal but it was all down to how he was alive to it that saw him convert.

Pogba has often been criticised for his inconsistency or inability to perform against the top six though his record is undeniable.

The former Juventus man started once more in a three man midfield and impressed, giving his manager Jose Mourinho plenty to think about.

Paul appears to be putting behind himself a poor run of form and should he keep up his consistency, he will star for his nation in the World Cup.

Paul Pogba’s certainly got plenty more to prove not because people doubt his ability but simply that he can develop even more.

Fans forget that he’s not in the peak of his career though he’s definitely no longer a ‘young’ player by the definition of the word.

Whenever Pogba plays well, Manchester United normally play well and he can be talismanic in their quest to secure the FA Cup trophy.

Marouane Fellaini: This is what Jose Mourinho told me before I scored against Arsenal

Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini has revealed just what Jose Mourinho told him to do before he scored the winner vs Arsenal.

The Gunners travelled to Old Trafford with not much on the line for them in terms of the league and played a rotated side.

United scored first through Paul Pogba after some bright play from Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku but Arsene Wenger’s men grabbed an equaliser after the break.

Mourinho brought on Fellaini as he often does as his plan B option and it worked once more with the goal seeing the match end 2-1 in Old Trafford’s favour.

The goal was scored in injury time to send fans into ecstatic celebrations but more importantly it meant another three important points in the race to secure second place.

There’s no doubt that Marouane is more dangerous in an opponents box than he is at protecting his own team’s box and his efforts have paid off.

With reports that the Belgian is set for a move away from the Red Devils in the summer, Jose may have to begin to consider a new kind of backup plan.

The former Everton man’s contract ends at the end of the current Premier League campaign and he appears to be allowed to leave for free.

Video: Old Trafford gives standing ovation to Arsene Wenger in classy move

Manchester United fans at Old Trafford gave Arsene Wenger a classy ovation ahead of the club’s clash with Arsenal in the race for the top four spots.

The French manager is set to leave the London club at the end of the season and much was made of how the supporters will act ahead of the match.

United fans did not disappoint however, showing Wenger plenty of respect with Sir Alex Ferguson even handing him a memento.

Jose Mourinho was involved as well though the testimonial feel to the game perhaps played a part in how his side played.

The Red Devils opened the scoring through Paul Pogba but Henrikh Mkhitaryan equalised after the break to make sure they wouldn’t just cruise through the match.

Unfortunately both sides didn’t show any real intensity in a fixture that used to end with both sets of players kicking lumps out of each other.

There were pieces of quality on show though not consistent enough to truly keep Old Trafford on it’s feet following Arsene’s ovation.

Mourinho will definitely be unhappy with how his Manchester United players performed regardless of the result or expectations on the match and he will be questioning their mentalities.

Paul Pogba: This is what I think about my relationship with Jose Mourinho

Paul Pogba’s relationship with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is “very good”, according to the player himself.

Rumours have circulated over the course of the season that the Frenchman has fallen out with his boss at Old Trafford.

Yet both have always stated the opposite. After being hailed by Mourinho ahead of Man United’s Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, Pogba was appreciative of the relationship.

“It’s good, very good,” the midfielder insisted to Sky Sports in an interview with Geoff Shreeves.

“He’s the coach, I’m the player. He does the coaching, I do the playing.”

Pogba has had an inconsistent season, with moments of utter brilliance in almost every game, but only rare occasions where he has truly dominated a match and led United.

Those games have been more frequent in the last couple of games, with superb performances against Man City at the Etihad, scoring twice to win the game, against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and a solid showing vs AFC Bournemouth in the league.

Three of his last four games have been impressive. That kind of consistency is what United fans are seeking from Pogba

“I’m here and very happy,” the star continued, with other rumours suggesting he could leave in the summer.

“I give my best for the team, for myself I’m happy because we are in a final [FA Cup final] and I want to finish the season very well.”

Pogba also praised the opposing manager of Sunday’s fixture, Arsene Wenger, who has announced he’ll leave Arsenal at the end of the season after 22 years.

“For a Frenchman, it’s all just respect that you have with a manager like Arsene, who’s been there for years and done what he’s done,” he told Sky.

“When I was a kid, I was supporting Arsenal because it was like the French national team and what he did at the club was incredible. The fans must be sad, for a big manager like this to leave like this. He has been there for a long time, maybe it was the time.”

Chelsea back in the race to sign Spaniard as Arsenal end their interest

Chelsea are reportedly back in the race to hire Luis Enrique this summer, according to The Times.

Previous reports have suggested that the former Barcelona boss was no longer an option for Chelsea, due to his wage demands, but that does not appear to be the case.

Wage demands and style of management is thought to be behind Arsenal ending their interest.

The former Barcelona boss reportedly wants a higher wage that Arsene Wenger is currently on, making an appointment unlikely.

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno/Getty Images Sport

The 47-year-old was among the favourites to replace Wenger this summer.

It was recently confirmed that the Frenchman would step down at the end of the season, paving the way for Arsenal to enter a new era at the club.

Enrique has been out of work since leaving the Catalan outfit and has been heavily linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea.

Chelsea have also been linked with Massimo Allegri and Maurizio Sarri with Antonio Conte set to leave the club.

Midfielder rejects Man United deal after 3 meetings with club

Manchester United have desperately sought after a new contract for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, but look set for disappointment.

The Belgian’s deal at Old Trafford expires this summer and with a number of clubs vying for his signature, Fellaini holds the cards in any potential negotiations.

Despite reservations from some fans, Fellaini is a player that Mourinho reportedly wants to keep. So much so that there have been three meetings including some in the last month to try and tie the player down to a new deal, according to the Daily Star.

One of the offers proposed by Man United was supposedly worth a staggeringly high £140,000 a week for Fellaini, a player once vilified at the club.

Signed in David Moyes’ summer transfer window for £27.5m from Everton, Fellaini has earned the respect of each of his managers at the club. However, there is reportedly a feeling within United that the 30-year-Old is ready to move on, accepting that he will never be loved by the fans, even though some sections of the support have been hugely supportive.

That United have offered so much to Fellaini in terms of wages evidences their desperation. Michael Carrick, the club captain, will retire at the end of this season, and Fellaini’s departure will mean Mourinho may have to sign two new midfielders this summer.

Any top midfielder will undoubtedly earn in the region of those wages and keeping Fellaini would stop United from having to spend any money on a transfer fee. However, Fellaini knows that because no transfer fee will be involved, he’ll be able to significantly improve his £80,000 a week wages at United and be given a huge signing on fee.

Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Monaco, West Ham and Leicester City are all reportedly interested. A reunion with David Moyes at a third cub, West Ham, may be on the cards.

Chelsea defender facing summer exit depending on Conte's future

Ligue 1 side AS Monaco are considering a summer move for Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Goal reports that the Brazilian’s future at Stamford Bridge will depend on what happens to Antonio Conte over the summer.

The pair reportedly fell out earlier in the season, which has seen the former Paris Saint-Germain defender struggle to hold down a place in the Chelsea side.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

Conte is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the season, despite having an extra year remaining on his contract at the club.

The former Juventus boss has expressed his frustration at Stamford Bridge throughout the campaign after being unable to sign his preferred transfer targets.

Michael Emenalo joined Monaco from Chelsea earlier this season and the report suggests that the former could help manufacture a deal.

With Champions League qualification unlikely this season there could be a number of high-profile exits at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Jose Mourinho: I’m a better manager than I’ve ever been before

Jose Mourinho has insisted he is a far better manager at Manchester United than he has been at any other club.

The Portuguese believes his experience of over a decade at top-level football means there has never been a better version of Jose Mourinho than right now.

His comments come in a season where many have questioned whether Mourinho is still a relevancy in football, whether his tactics and methods are dated.

With Man United second in the Premier League and in the FA Cup final, having won both the UEFA Europa League and EFL Cup last year, Mourinho is adamant that is not the case.

“Am I a better manager than 10 years ago? Yes, in every way,” Mourinho said.

“From the motivational point of view, I am the same, nothing has changed.

“My passion for the job is the same and my sense of responsibility, emotional control is better. Obviously I am much more mature.”

Mourinho said he now has experience of every situation, and that the only challenge for a manager like him, having done it with the big boys before, is to maintain the same motivation and passion for the game.

“At every level, training, matches, relations with players, it feels like everything is deja vu,” the United boss continued. “It is a job where the more experience you have, the better you are. You just have to keep this motivational level.”

“I’m very consistent and focused. Sometimes when I see some kids are a little bit up and down, I feel quite frustrated, that’s why I don’t forget points we’ve lost against Newcastle, Huddersfield, Stoke, West Brom. That’s due to the mental inconsistency.”

“What matters isn’t my relation with the press or the way I present myself in press conferences, or the way I fight or don’t fight with people on the touchline or the media.

“It’s about my day by day, the way I want to do things. I’m better than before.”

Even many United fans have questioned whether Mourinho is still the same manager as he was while winning the treble at Inter Milan or moulding one of the finest Premier League sides ever with Chelsea in the mid-2000s.

There is certainly change in his manner. The cheeky Mourinho who called himself the “Special One” has maintained such arrogance but the cheeky flirtations with the media are now far rarer.

A winner of trophies, though, is still what Mourinho is. An FA Cup at the end of this campaign, and his phenomenal record of winning will continue.

Emmanuel Petit: Arsenal great regrets not playing for Manchester United

Arsenal great Emmanuel Petit has admitted that he regrets opting to return to London instead of signing for Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson showed interest in 2001.

Petit first played in England between 1997 and 2000 and enjoyed success with Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal before spending a year at Barcelona and then signing for Chelsea in a £7.5m deal until his retirement in 2004.

His spell at Stamford Bridge didn’t go to plan and now the Frenchman has been publicly pondering what could have been seventeen years ago if he decided to move to Manchester rather than down south.

While taking part in an ‘Ask me anything’ thread on Reddit, Petit mentioned: “Yes, I could have played for Manchester United. I really regret not doing that now, I could’ve played with Giggs, Scholes etcetera. Some amazing players.”

Petit also admitted that United legend Paul Scholes was the toughest opponent in his career, however, said that he is a fan of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who have been United’s closest challengers for 2nd place in the Premier League this season.

He added: “But I have a crush on Liverpool – especially right now. I love Klopp and would love to play under him.”

It’s doubtful Petit regrets the time he spent at Highbury with Arsenal, but it’d be interesting to see how he would’ve done alongside “amazing” players like Ryan Giggs and Scholes all those years ago.

Ander Herrera: David de Gea calms me down before Manchester United matches

Ander Herrera has explained how Manchester United teammate and close friend David de Gea calms him down in the dressing room before their matches, as part of an exclusive interview on the Spanish goalkeeper’s rise in England.

Herrera and De Gea have formed a close relationship since the former’s arrival in 2014, and both have become important players in the squad under managers Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

Both coming from Spain, the duo have formed a Spanish contingent at United along with Juan Mata and Herrera has revealed how De Gea helps him get in the right mindset as part of an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.

Herrera told the national newspaper: “Before games, I’m a bit crazy. I get tense, I shake, dance. David [de Gea] pats me on the back, shrugs and says, ‘No, Ander, stand still, don’t worry, it can’t go wrong. If they shoot, they cannot score because I’m in goal’. It’s like nothing has happened.”

Continuing, he said: “In the FA Cup semi-final against Everton in 2016, he saved a penalty from Romelu Lukaku and after the game he’s just like, ‘OK, that happened. What do you want to do tomorrow?’ It’s like a student handing in an assignment and moving on.”

Herrera will be hoping to start a fifth straight Premier League match in Sunday’s clash against Arsenal, and concluded this interview with a simple statement: “This is greatness.”

Paul Pogba: "Michael Carrick has helped me since I came back to Manchester United last summer"

Paul Pogba has revealed that Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has helped improve his game since returning to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer of 2016.

Pogba went to the Serie A giants on a free transfer in 2012 and rapidly became one of the world’s most sought-after midfielders before Jose Mourinho re-signed him for £89m in his first transfer window in charge.

36-year-old Carrick, turning from player to coach at United at the end of the season, has been at the club for almost 12 years and has seemingly been offering the advice he once received when in the same position.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of United’s anticipated Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday, Pogba explained the benefits of training alongside a veteran like Carrick, stating: “He’s [Carrick] got the experience. He always talks to me since I arrived last year. Talks to me, helps me on my position.”

“It just came naturally in training when you see something that could be better,” he continued. “He told me about running without the ball can make the difference to win the game. I call them the Lampard runs. Outside giving the ball and then making the run, getting in the box. That helps alot.”

Michael Carrick may have played his last game in the famous Red shirt, but Paul Pogba is widely considered to be the future of the team’s spine and the advice he’s receiving now will help him surpass the heights that Carrick has hit over his long career.

Chelsea player ratings: Swansea (A)

Chelsea laboured to a 1-0 win over Swansea, giving them a small hope of Champions League football next season.

The Blues are now just two points off Spurs in the race for the final Champions League spot, as Chelsea look to recover in what has been a disappointing season for the Blues.

Cesc Fabregas got the only goal of the game early on, beating Swansea at the Liberty Stadium. This was the first time the Swans had lost at home since early January.

Here’s how we rated the Blues…

The post Chelsea player ratings: Swansea (A) appeared first on Read Chelsea.

De Gea reveals what Ferdinand and Evra told him when he first arrived

Manchester United star David de Gea has revealed that the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic all set the standards for the club.

The Spaniard joined during Sir Alex Ferguson’s latter years and played behind the experienced trio at the start of his career.

That certainly helped De Gea in his quest to settle in at Old Trafford and he explained how they all helped him in terms of advice.

The former Atletico Madrid man is now perhaps United’s only world class player though the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are expected to show their quality more consistently any time now.

David though discusses how it wasn’t always smooth sailing and the iconic defenders mentioned previously all set the highest of standards for the club.

It’s a shame that it feels as though no one within the Red Devils squad is doing anything of that sort anymore as too many of the players during Sir Alex’s tenure were moved on.

Perhaps Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia now set the standards instead but it’s fair to say neither are the most vocal of leaders.

The Englishman’s retirement at the end of the season will also end an era with none of the squad that won the Champions League in Moscow remaining at the club.

De Gea reveals the most defining moment in his Man Utd career

Manchester United star David de Gea has revealed that his save against Juan Mata is one of the most defining moment in his career at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper was under huge scrutiny at the time with there being questions over his ability and whether he’s good enough or not for the top level.

However, in that incredible match against Chelsea, with Mata and Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge at the time, De Gea pulled off an incredible save in stoppage time.

The attacking midfielder took a delightful free-kick for his side that looked set for the top corner but in typical fashion the former Atletico Madrid man showed off his supernatural reflexes and stopped the ball from hitting the back of the net.

United left the match with a point on that day but David grew tenfold after his save in terms of confidence and perhaps even ability as he never looked back.

After the save no one ever doubted the Spaniard again and he was finally allowed the time to adapt to being at Manchester United.

It all worked out in the end for David de Gea as well as his club and with Mourinho ruling out a departure he could even create a legacy for himself.

De Gea reveals how Mourinho is the same as Sir Alex

Manchester United star David de Gea has insisted finishing fourth is not good enough for his own personal targets as well as the clubs.

The Spaniard also went on to explain how Jose Mourinho is the same as Sir Alex Ferguson in a certain aspect which would surely delight the fans.

De Gea has been one of United’s most consistent players this season and is on course to win the club’s player of the year award once more.

A goalkeeper winning the award is not only testament to his talent but also to the team’s shortcomings in terms of their defending.

Mourinho has made the Red Devils’ defence more solid but they still look shaky when not protected and David has certainly rescued them plenty of times.

Perhaps it was the Portuguese manager’s ability that convinced the Real Madrid target to remain at Old Trafford when he first joined.

David de Gea has once more been linked with the La Liga giants but Jose Mourinho recently claimed there’s no chance he will leave.

The goalkeeper doesn’t look as likely to leave as he once appeared and it seems that the former Chelsea boss had a lot to do with that.

Mourinho hints at possible Man Utd transfer targets

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that a team without a Brazilian player is not considered a team, hinting at possible transfers in the upcoming summer window.

There are currently no players at Old Trafford that represent the South American nation which makes the Portuguese manager’s comments all the more interesting.

United have been linked with several Brazilian stars though the main ones are Juventus left-back Alex Sandro and Chelsea winger Willian.

Mourinho opened up previously on the Blues’ attacker claiming a move wasn’t possible and reports believe the manager is willing to do ‘crazy things’ to sign the defender.

Red Devils’ fans will have to wait until the summer to see whether a Brazilian will be brought into the club but with rumours of the former Real Madrid boss wanting to revamp his defence and midfield, it’s very possible.

Both Sandro and Willian would add definite quality to the current crop of players though there’s the argument that the former is more needed.

Manchester United’s defence is in desperate need of some work and the left-back would solve one of Jose’s issues in the backline.

The Chelsea man however would be joining a well stocked attack that has a perfect mix of creativity, pace, experience and youthful exuberance; not that fans wouldn’t love to see him come to Old Trafford.

Mourinho discusses Man Utd's interest in Willian

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea won’t make a move for Willian possible as reports continue to link him with Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss was said to be interested in his former player despite the winger seemingly set to remain at Stamford Bridge next season.

Willian is considered to be one of the Blues’ best players but his future as well as other of their stars has been up in the air due to Antonio Conte’s possible departure.

The Italian manager has underperformed with his side this season and is reportedly set to be sacked though he won’t mind it much considering how he’s been eyeing up the Italy job.

Mourinho though has apparently admitted to interest in the Brazilian but has brushed reports away by claiming Chelsea would never make a transfer possible.

There’s no doubt the kind of quality Willian would bring to United and he would seemingly slot in effortlessly in the right wing.

Jose previously claimed he was delighted with his current crop of attackers and will only focus on improving his defence and midfield.

Chelsea under normal circumstances may never allow the move but it was what fans also thought last season about Nemanja Matic and the uncertainty over Conte’s future could work into the Red Devils’ hands.

Arsenal Out to Break Record 12-Year Manchester United Win Drought at Old Trafford

Arsene Wenger’s final trip to Old Trafford as Arsenal manager will see the Frenchman attempt to end a 12-year wait for a Premier League win at Manchester United’s home as a parting present to the club he’s served for more than two decades.

The last time Arsenal beat United on their own soil in league competition came all the way back in September 2006, courtesy of a late Emmanuel Adebayor winner. The 12 years that have passed since mark the longest Arsenal have had to wait between Premier League wins at Old Trafford.

United have successfully defended their borders in league competition 10 times since then, winning seven and drawing on three occasions. Arsenal did win at Old Trafford as recently as March 2015, with that FA Cup sixth-round result their first win at the ground in nine years.

At least the Gunners aren’t yet close to beating their all-time record drought between top-flight wins away to the Red Devils, however. The north Londoners once went from October 1930 to April 1962 without beating United away in the old Division One.

Wenger’s men were disappointed to draw 1-1 at home to 10-man Atletico Madrid on Thursday, failing to capitalise on their man advantage in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final encounter.

That result left Sunday’s visitors with only one win from their last four outings, while United have had a full week’s rest since beating Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday to take their spot in the FA Cup final.

After suffering only one home defeat in 2017, United have already doubled that tally this year with losses to Sevilla and West Bromwich Albion in recent weeks. That will give Arsenal some hope of breaking their lines, although it could also be unfortunate timing for the Gunners, taking on a foe that’s already had their home record disturbed.

The 17 points that separates second-placed United from Arsenal in sixth is the largest we’ve seen at this stage of a season for some years. The Gunners are closer to Newcastle United in 10th—16 points below them—than they are to challenging for the Premier League’s runner-up spot.

Arsenal are still waiting on an away Premier League win in 2018 and have a 12-year Old Trafford curse hanging over their head leading into Sunday’s clash, making for a potentially nightmarish trip to the Theatre of Dreams.
