Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has admitted that a lack of goals could cost them a place in next year’s Champions League.
The Evening Standard reports the Italian believes Chelsea have not been ruthless enough in front of goal this season:
Our first problem this season is that we have not been so clinical. If you want to win, you have to score. If you don’t take your chances, the result stays in the balance until the end.
Chelsea have scored 60 Premier League goals this season, which is the sixth highest tally in the division and a long way behind Manchester City who boast an impressive 102 goals.
Eden Hazard is the Blues’ top scorer with 12 league goals, followed by Alvaro Morata with 11 and Marcos Alonso with six.
Going into the final three matches the Blues are two points behind London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, although Spurs have a superior goal difference.
In regards to their lack of ruthlessness, Conte added:
I remember, for example, our most recent game against West Ham, we dropped two points of vital importance for us. We were winning the game and we created a lot of chances to score but we kept the result at only 1-0 and at the end they scored and drew.
Conte joined Chelsea in the summer of 2016 having led to Italy to the quarter-finals of the Euros, and brought immediate success as the club won the Premier League in his first season.
However, the disappointing defence of their title has lead to murmurs of discontent this campaign, and the Italian has been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit.
