Manchester United star David de Gea has revealed that the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic all set the standards for the club.
The Spaniard joined during Sir Alex Ferguson’s latter years and played behind the experienced trio at the start of his career.
That certainly helped De Gea in his quest to settle in at Old Trafford and he explained how they all helped him in terms of advice.
The former Atletico Madrid man is now perhaps United’s only world class player though the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are expected to show their quality more consistently any time now.
David though discusses how it wasn’t always smooth sailing and the iconic defenders mentioned previously all set the highest of standards for the club.
De Gea: “We had a hugely experienced defence – icons like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra. I remember Rio and Paddy telling me, "OK, fine, you're young, but this is Manchester United. We only accept the best”.” #mufc [Mail] pic.twitter.com/G98PdJFpLO

It’s a shame that it feels as though no one within the Red Devils squad is doing anything of that sort anymore as too many of the players during Sir Alex’s tenure were moved on.
Perhaps Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia now set the standards instead but it’s fair to say neither are the most vocal of leaders.
The Englishman’s retirement at the end of the season will also end an era with none of the squad that won the Champions League in Moscow remaining at the club.
