Marouane Fellaini has admitted he was targeting a winning goal when he came off the substitutes bench against Arsenal.
The Belgian got just that, heading in, via a deflection, to win the game for Manchester United in the 91st minute.
Paul Pogba had put the Reds in front early in the first half and Man United dominated proceedings from then until half-time, but lacked the killer instinct that could have seen them put two or three past the visitors in that opening period.
Former-Red Henrikh Mkhitaryan levelled after a series of defensive errors and Fellaini’s goal was vital, securing the three points and thus United’s place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Fellaini replaced Ander Herrera in the second-half, and said that scoring was always his aim as soon as he came on the pitch.
“It’s good to score in Old Trafford, a late goal against a good team, we have the three points, that’s the most important thing,” Fellaini said.
“I wanted to do that. It was difficult but it was good.”
Fellaini called on his teammates to continue winning until the end of the season despite qualifying for Europe’s elite club competition already.
“We’re sure to participate in the Champions League. Let’s continue,” he added.
The 30-year-old has been look set to leave the club this summer, with no time remaining on his contract and a number of clubs interested in increasing his wages and giving him a huge signing on fee.
However, manager Jose Mourinho spoke with confidence after Sunday’s game, claiming that a new deal for Fellaini is “nearly there”. Though he has been scapegoated at times, and rightly blamed at others, for some of United’s recent woes, he does often pop up with the all important goal.
