Ander Herrera has explained how Manchester United teammate and close friend David de Gea calms him down in the dressing room before their matches, as part of an exclusive interview on the Spanish goalkeeper’s rise in England.
Herrera and De Gea have formed a close relationship since the former’s arrival in 2014, and both have become important players in the squad under managers Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
Both coming from Spain, the duo have formed a Spanish contingent at United along with Juan Mata and Herrera has revealed how De Gea helps him get in the right mindset as part of an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.
Herrera told the national newspaper: “Before games, I’m a bit crazy. I get tense, I shake, dance. David [de Gea] pats me on the back, shrugs and says, ‘No, Ander, stand still, don’t worry, it can’t go wrong. If they shoot, they cannot score because I’m in goal’. It’s like nothing has happened.”
Continuing, he said: “In the FA Cup semi-final against Everton in 2016, he saved a penalty from Romelu Lukaku and after the game he’s just like, ‘OK, that happened. What do you want to do tomorrow?’ It’s like a student handing in an assignment and moving on.”
Herrera will be hoping to start a fifth straight Premier League match in Sunday’s clash against Arsenal, and concluded this interview with a simple statement: “This is greatness.”
