Manchester United changed their tactics to exploit a weak Arsenal side, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed.
Marouane Fellaini headed home the winner in the 91st minute after a generally dominant performance in which the Reds should have gone into the second-half with a far greater lead.
Paul Pogba had put the Reds in front in a very dominant first-half in which Arsenal were limited to only a couple of chances and United were constantly around their penalty area.
Mourinho was forced into changes after Arsenal grabbed a goal back in the second half after a collection of poor defensive errors.
“We changed our approach,” Mourinho said of his tactics for the game.
The Portuguese later brought on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for Man United, as well as the winning goalscorer Fellaini. All three substitutions were quite early on.
Martial, in particular, dragged the visiting defence all over the place.
“We gave more width,” the United boss continued.
“We kill the Champions League story, we’re there. I think we still need four points to finish second which is the position we want.”
United confirmed a top four spot well before the end of the season with Sunday’s victory. Of course, the target remains finishing second and winning the FA Cup, with Chelsea in the final at Wembley in May.
In the last couple of months, United have now beaten all of their top six opponents, with comeback victories against Man City and Chelsea and a late winner against Arsenal as well as dominant performances against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
It’s been a fantastic couple of months in terms of consistency in big games, only let down by stupid slip-ups against smaller opposition, such as West Brom.
