Midfielder rejects Man United deal after 3 meetings with club

Manchester United have desperately sought after a new contract for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, but look set for disappointment.

The Belgian’s deal at Old Trafford expires this summer and with a number of clubs vying for his signature, Fellaini holds the cards in any potential negotiations.

Despite reservations from some fans, Fellaini is a player that Mourinho reportedly wants to keep. So much so that there have been three meetings including some in the last month to try and tie the player down to a new deal, according to the Daily Star.

One of the offers proposed by Man United was supposedly worth a staggeringly high £140,000 a week for Fellaini, a player once vilified at the club.

Signed in David Moyes’ summer transfer window for £27.5m from Everton, Fellaini has earned the respect of each of his managers at the club. However, there is reportedly a feeling within United that the 30-year-Old is ready to move on, accepting that he will never be loved by the fans, even though some sections of the support have been hugely supportive.

That United have offered so much to Fellaini in terms of wages evidences their desperation. Michael Carrick, the club captain, will retire at the end of this season, and Fellaini’s departure will mean Mourinho may have to sign two new midfielders this summer.

Any top midfielder will undoubtedly earn in the region of those wages and keeping Fellaini would stop United from having to spend any money on a transfer fee. However, Fellaini knows that because no transfer fee will be involved, he’ll be able to significantly improve his £80,000 a week wages at United and be given a huge signing on fee.

Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Monaco, West Ham and Leicester City are all reportedly interested. A reunion with David Moyes at a third cub, West Ham, may be on the cards.
