Former Liverpool star believes Mourinho's time is up at Man United

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp does not believe Jose Mourinho has what it takes to turn things around at Manchester United this season.

The 55-year-old cut a gloomy, petulant figure over pre-season and new signings after Fred failed to arrive, and that mood has percolated into the new campaign.

A miserable 3-2 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion followed by a 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur has heaped enormous pressure on Mourinho, who at this point retains the backing of the board.

Speaking earlier this week, Redknapp noted he could not see Mourinho turning the club’s dour situation around.

“You can turn round and say, ‘let’s give him time, let’s give him until the end of his contract’, but you’re damaging a brand here,” he said.

“I just don’t see how he can turn this around.

“That’s not because I think Jose Mourinho is not a good manager, I just don’t think he’s the right manager for Manchester United.

“I don’t think his style fits, and he’s never looked happy there.”

It can feel good – nay, necessary – to create a positive angle in these dark times. Some pointed at Mourinho staying behind to applaud the Stretford End after Spurs. Some point at the performance itself, which was miles better than Brighton. Others look towards Mourinho’s fighting talk, or perhaps the innate quality in this team. There are always straws to grasp at.

But there is also a grim reality we have to confront. Since January, when Mourinho’s attacking momentum and balance disappeared with the signing of Alexis Sanchez, United have encountered a downward spiral – losing steam in the Premier League, losing the FA Cup final, losing the transfer window, and now losing their ability to hold firm, to win games.

You cannot help but sense where this current situation is heading.

Pundit explains why Manchester United will beat Burnley

Michael Owen believes Manchester United will bounce back from a traumatic couple of weeks against Burnley this weekend.

Jose Mourinho and his team have encountered immense scrutiny after consecutive defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, conceding three times in both games.

A defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor will ramp up the pressure even further and even put Mourinho’s position under serious threat.

But Owen, looking ahead to the clash, believes Man United will have enough to overcome Sean Dyche’s team this weekend.

“United have lost two of their first three Premier League games and their 3-0 reverse against Spurs was Jose Mourinho’s biggest ever home defeat in all competitions as a manager,” he said.

“United played well in the first half, but Harry Kane’s wonderful header was the key moment in the game and you sensed the frustration both on and off the field by the final whistle at Old Trafford.

“The Clarets have picked up just three points in their last eight league games and they face a difficult Europa League tie with AEK Athens at Turf Moor on Thursday. I think Sunday promises to be a tight tetchy affair, but I think United can bounce back from their Spurs loss.”

Burnley only have one point so far this season and played out a draining 1-1 draw with Olympiakos on Thursday night, which Mourinho attended.

Key players like Ashley Barnes, Ben Mee, Jeff Hendrick, Aaron Lennon and Sam Vokes all started the game but others, like Jack Cork and James Tarkowski, were rested.

In other words, this is almost the perfect game for United at this point. They will dominate the ball and should be able to take advantage of some tired legs towards the end.

Vincent Kompany reveals what Man City can take advantage of from Man United's struggles

It’s no secret that Manchester City fans, and any rival fans for that matter, will have been loving the downfall of Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning retirement back in 2013.

Five years on, and the club still hasn’t fully recovered, despite a manager with just as much prestige in Jose Mourinho taking charge.

Man United have started the 2018-19 season in dismal style, losing to both Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur in the opening three Premier League fixtures.

Man City still continue to impress though, and captain Kompany, being the down-to-earth player he is, has admitted his compassion towards United.

However, he also sees the club’s struggles as something to take advantage of which could mean more bad news for those not wanting City to walk the league again.

“Manchester United are still dealing with a post-Ferguson era. So they will get that side of me, feeling compassionate. But any time it takes them to get back up, we need to take advantage of it.”

United travel to Burnley at the weekend as they look to kick-start their campaign once again but also face the dreaded possibility of three straight league losses.

The only thing they can do now is to just keep on getting points and hoping those leading in the title race slip up as much as they have already.

Kompany and City look as strong as ever, though.

Jose Mourinho names 16-17 season 'fantastic' due to Man United winning this competition

With Jose Mourinho’s pre-match press conference scheduled before the 2018-19 Champions League Group Stage draw, questions regarding European football were always inevitable.

Mourinho has won both the Europa League and Champions League to add to his array of managerial achievements and the most recent triumph was in his debut season as Manchester United manager.

It’s an achievement he’s obviously very proud of and he brought it up with the media whilst underlining his prestige as a football manager on Friday afternoon.

“Two seasons ago we had a fantastic season because we won the Europa League. We won it because it was our level. We are the last team in England to win a European competition.”

Man United found out who they were facing in this season’s Champions League Group Stage shortly after Mourinho’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s visit to Burnley, and the draw has been tough on them this year.

Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Old Trafford with Juventus, who are joined by dangerous La Liga side Valencia and Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys in Group H which leaves United with a tough task to avoid dropping into Europe’s secondary competition once more.

The club will certainly be looking to improve on last season’s catastrophic Round of 16 exit to the hands of Sevilla, but a huge challenge lies ahead if they are to do so.

Picture: Jose Mourinho planning for make or break Burnley clash

Jose Mourinho was spotted at Turf Moor for Burnley’s Europa League clash with Olympiakos last night ahead of Manchester United’s crucial clash with Sean Dyche’s side

The 55-year-old finds himself under enormous pressure having lost consecutive Premier League games to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

And some reports have even claimed that defeat to Burnley would culminate in the manager being sacked from the club.

He was spotted with the club’s opposition scout, docked in his trademark cap to stay incognito, as Burnley wasted a series of chances and ultimately drew 1-1 with the Greek side, losing 4-2 on aggregate.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Mourinho insisted Burnley were unlucky to go out and made a point of how Dyche rested a number of key players for the meeting with United on Sunday afternoon.

“I think (unlucky to go out),” he said. “I went there and knew that they would rest a lot of the players that are going to play on Sunday, which happens.”

“I was not surprised by that, I went with the intention to see which direction they go, if Sean was trying to change or stick with the same principles that made them successful in the last couple of seasons and they were very unlucky

'Special' Jose Mourinho receives backing from Brazil legend

Brazilian footballing legend Ronaldo has publicly advised those who are criticising Jose Mourinho to not speak too soon and labelled the Manchester United manager as ‘special’.

Man United have endured a poor start to the 2018-19 season, losing two of their opening three Premier League matches including a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford last time out, Mourinho’s worst home loss ever,

That has understandably stolen the headlines whilst the front pages are dominated with the United boss’ face which has led to criticism of Mourinho and United at an all-time high.

When asked about the current situation at the club, Real Madrid great Ronaldo explained you shouldn’t judge Mourinho too soon: “I don’t know what’s happening in Manchester, but wait before criticising Mourinho – he’s special and he’s won a lot.”

Mourinho won three trophies in his debut season at the helm but suffered a dry campaign throughout 2017-18 and now sees his side already trailing their Premier League title rivals in points and form.

It’s refreshing to see that legends of the game still recognise Mourinho’s quality as a manager though and it must certainly fill United fans with confidence that he can turn the club’s fortunes around.

United look to avoid three straight defeats against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho makes huge personal claim ahead of Burnley clash

Jose Mourinho certainly hasn’t held back when defending Manchester United’s dismal start to the 2018-19 season and he’s now reminded the media of his pedigree as a football manager.

Following a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday, Mourinho’s worst ever at home, speculation grew that his Man United departure was imminent but it sounds as if he’s not planning on going anywhere.

Mourinho has never exactly been shy about his accomplishments as a manager and he’s now come out and boldly said that he’s one of the best in the game.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s visit to Burnley, Mourinho was straight up with the journalists present: “I am the manager of one of the greatest clubs in the world but I am also one of the greatest managers in the world.”

A defeat at Turf Moor this weekend would crank up the pressure on the Portuguese boss even further, but various reports suggest his position is secure whatever happens and his relationship with United chief executive Ed Woodward is ‘as strong as ever’.

Mourinho cut a moody figure throughout most of pre-season due to the club’s struggles to sign a new central defender, and the failure to do so is certainly costing the team so far.

United will be even further behind their Premier League title rivals before kick-off on Sunday though, so an upturn in results is needed urgently.

Jose Mourinho expresses delight with Man United defender

Jose Mourinho is understandably delighted with the strong form Luke Shaw has shown at the start of the 2018-19 season, in what is one of the very few positives to take for Manchester United at the moment.

The 23-year-old netted his first ever senior goal in the opening day 2-1 win against Leicester City and has looked like the prospect Louis van Gaal signed from Southampton back in 2014 in all three outings so far.

Mourinho has been highly critical of Shaw during his tenure as Man United manager, sometimes publicly which has sparked controversy, but it finally seems like the left-back has won him over.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s visit to Burnley, Mourinho explained: “We are very, very happy with him and I think to go to the national team after three Premier League matches, for him, is an extraordinary feeling.”

Shaw’s early form has not only seen him selected over Mourinho’s first choice left-back option Ashley Young, but also earnt a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

He hasn’t represented England since March 2017 but is now in very good sted to feature against Spain and Switzerland at Wembley Stadium and good displays there will only strengthen his chances of continuing to start in Man United’s back line.

Jose Mourinho names surprising achievement as one of his greatest

Jose Mourinho has once again played the past achievements card when defending himself over Manchester United’s poor start to the 2018-19 season.

The Man United manager has been heavily speculated to either leave the club or get sacked before the campaign is over after losing two of the opening three Premier League games, including his worst ever home defeat last time out.

Since the 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, Mourinho has come out fighting against the British media and made his latest point during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Addressing the media ahead of Sunday’s visit to Burnley, Mourinho stated: “I’m the only manager to win eight titles in Italy, Spain and England – not small titles – and second place last season was one of my greatest achievements.”

Mourinho’s successful history with winning trophies has given him the reputation of one of the world’s best managers and made him the prime candidate to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when the legendary Scot retired back in 2013.

He did eventually become United boss in 2016 though and has won three trophies since but many supporters still consider his methods as dated and boring.

Regardless, he isn’t talking like a man who is about to resign and it’s clear he wants to see an upturn in form from his team more than anyone else.

Former Chelsea star makes big claim over their upcoming Europa League campaign

Former Chelsea star Hernan Crespo has identified the Blues and Sevilla as the two leading candidates for Europa League glory this season.

Crespo discussed the recently-held Europa League group stage draw with Sky Italia, as cited in a report from Football Italia, and highlighted Chelsea and their Spanish counterparts Sevilla as the teams to watch.

There are prestigious sides there and if they decide to target the Europa League as a priority, they can bring the trophy home. We’ll see if Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea focus on Europe this season, while Sevilla are specialists in the cup competitions.

Shaun Botterill/Getty Images Sport

After finishing outside of the top four in the Premier League last season, Chelsea were forced to settle for Europa League football instead of the Champions League this season.

Nevertheless, Maurizio Sarri will undoubtedly view the competition as the ideal chance to lift silverware in his first campaign at the club, with a hectic schedule awaiting the Blues.

Chelsea have been drawn into Group L for this season’s competition and will face PAOK, BATE Borisov and MOL Vidi FC as they look to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

The Blues will fancy their chances of topping their group but will be well aware of potential upsets.

Maurizio Sarri picks out which attribute Chelsea star must improve on

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has called on Marcos Alonso to improve his defensive qualities as the season progresses, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Blues boss addressed the media ahead of his side’s home fixture against Bournemouth this weekend, with the team now keen to make it four wins on the bounce in the Premier League.

Alonso has been utilised in a different role under Sarri compared to his time under the management of Antonio Conte. The former Chelsea boss deployed the Spaniard as a left wing-back in a formation consisting of five defenders.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

Sarri, though, has implemented his favoured 4-3-3 setup at Chelsea following his arrival, meaning that Alonso has dropped into a deeper role as a left-back, as opposed to the more forward-thinking role of left wing-back.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form so far for Chelsea but Sarri feels there is still room for improvement. Highlighting Alonso’s qualities, the Italian boss hailed his left-back and tipped him for big things this season.

Alonso played very well in three matches. I think he’s a very good player and he can improve in the defensive phase.

He has physical qualities at the top level so I think he can do more in the defensive phase but I am not worried, he is a very good player but I think he can do more.

Chelsea v Bournemouth: Match Preview

Maurizio Sarri’s unbeaten Chelsea host Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth as the Blues hope to continue a near perfect start under their new boss.

Chelsea, who currently sit in third place behind both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, have been widely impressive under Sarri with a 3-2 victory over Arsenal the highlight of the team’s proceedings so far.

The Cherries, who currently sit in sixth, have also had a similarly good start in the new campaign with wins against Cardiff and West Ham. They recently could only manage a 2-2 draw against Marco Silva’s Everton, with Richarlison and Adam Smith sent off for both sides.

Make no mistake, Bournemouth may be the 2018/19 season’s dark horses. This can be largely attributed to the form of Callum Wilson, who has netted twice so far this season, always looking a goal threat in every match he plays.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

The Blues will have to watch out for former Chelsea man Nathan Ake, too, who has also started the season off well. The Dutch defender has scored once so far this campaign but has earned rave reviews for his performances in defence.

Chelsea will also reunite with former keeper Asmir Begovic, who spent two seasons at the Bridge.

Additionally, for the Blues, it could be a chance to use some of the fringe members of the squad, including England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has found minutes hard to come by at Stamford Bridge so far this term.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Bournemouth

I do think that the Blues will have enough firepower to beat the South Coast side, however, it is hard to ignore the threat that Callum Wilson has and I wouldn’t surprised if Chelsea’s defence switches off, if only for as second, allowing Wilson to pounce.

Jose Mourinho breaks silence on Anthony Martial's contract situation

Jose Mourinho has strongly hinted that Anthony Martial is close to agreeing a new contract at Manchester United.

The Frenchman, whose relationship with the manager is strained, looked set to leave Old Trafford earlier this summer.

But various reports – including the BBC – have claimed that Martial, in the belief that Mourinho will not last long as manager, was in talks with the club over a five-year deal.

And Mourinho, speaking at a press conference, noted that nothing as yet was official but essentially confirmed that a deal would go through.

“With Martial you have to wait for that to be official because in this moment is not official,” he said.

Supporters never thought this would happen. Over the summer it felt as if Martial, not Mourinho, would be the one closer to moving on. But after a tumultuous summer and start to the season that notion has been flipped on his head.

Although it is not as if this deal has been done behind the manager’s back. Mourinho has clearly sanctioned the move as manager. That said, you strongly sense that Martial has only agreed to sign on the dotted line because he feels the current manager’s days are numbered.

Emery Reacts To Arsenal's Europa League Group Stage Draw

Emery Reacts To Arsenal’s Europa League Group Stage Draw

Unai Emery has reacted to Arsenal’s Europa League group stage opponents after the draw was made on Friday (via Arsenal.com).

Arsenal ultimately came close to winning the UEFA Europa League last season and this season’s competition has started again.

A semi-final defeat to Atletico Madrid prevented the Gunners from going all the way in the Europa League but they are now being managed by someone who has surpassed that final hurdle.

Unai Emery has a history with this competition after three successive titles with Sevilla and is surely out to win it again with Arsenal.

Now, the draw has been made with the Gunners set to come up against Sporting Clube de Portugal, Qarabag FK and FC Vorskla Poltava.

Now, Unai Emery has spoken about his side’s opponents in the competition.

“First, it’s three teams and we’ll have the recipe for them. After this, we want to go far in this competition,” Emery said in his pre-match press conference.

“Each match is different and each match involves a lot of travel. For some, the travel is very long but it’s like that.

“The adaptation for these three teams needs to be positive and we need to face them with ambition and our interest to do well in the competition.”

Arsenal will be hoping to go all the way in the UEFA Europa League this season. They were two games away from doing it last season but now have a manager which has done it on three occasions. It’s a decent group stage draw and hopefully, the start of an exciting European adventure.

Reports: Key Arsenal Man Could Be Banned From Playing Against One Of Europa League Opponents Due To His Nationality

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be banned from playing against one of Arsenal’s Europa League group stage opponents after the draw was made today (via Arsenal.com).

It’s a competition which the Gunners came close to winning last season.

Now, the Gunners have learned who they will be facing in the group stages of the tournament after being drawn against  Sporting Clube de Portugal, Qarabag FK and FC Vorskla Poltava.

Portuguese side Sporting CP have been marred by off-the-pitch turmoil in recent months but have since reorganised and will be stiff competition.

Also in the group are the Ukranian side FC Vorskla Poltava and Qarabag FK, a fixture which has already been marred in controversy.

Reports suggest that Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be unable to play the away fixture as Armenian people are currently banned from entering Azerbaijan.

Uefa has already responded to these claims, issuing a statement stating the following:

“It is a standard procedure for UEFA to send letters of support to associations, clubs or embassies in order to obtain visa for players in order to be able to travel to another country and play in UEFA competition matches.”

Mkhitaryan has a history with this matter and was left out of Borussia Dortmund’s squad to play against the Azerbaijani side, Gabala back in 2015.

It’s a strange situation and hopefully, one which will be resolved fairly quickly. It’s obviously going to cause UEFA, Qarabag FK and Azerbaijan considerable embarrassment which could lead to a quick resolution. However, it is baffling to think that this law exists in the country. Aside from that, it’s a good draw for Arsenal.

[Team News] Cardiff v Arsenal – Boost For Gunners As Key Man Set To Return Ahead Of Schedule

Arsenal have revealed that club captain Laurent Koscielny could return for the club ahead of schedule (via Arsenal.com).

Match: Cardiff City v Arsenal

Kick-Off (GMT): Sun 2 Sep 13:30

He’s become something of a forgotten man at Arsenal which is strange considering he’s the club captain.

Laurent Koscielny hasn’t really been seen at Arsenal since suffering that Achilles injury back in the Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman wasn’t expected to train before December but several weeks ago that day was pushed forward and now, it has been pushed again.

In the team news for the Premier League match with Cardiff City, the club has confirmed that Koscielny will now return to full training in November.

Also expected to return by November are the other players currently missing from the squad including Sead Kolasinac, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Carl Jenkinson.

It’s great to hear that Laurent Koscielny is progressing well ahead of schedule. The Frenchman has been a great player for the club and it will be fascinating to see how he develops under Unai Emery.

Reports: Emery Tried To Sign Ozil For PSG Back In January

Reports: Emery Tried To Sign Ozil For PSG Back In January

Reports suggest that Unai Emery tried to sign Mesut Ozil for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year while the Spaniard was still in charge of the club (via ESPN).

They may have been involved in a rumoured falling out at Arsenal this week but there are now reports which suggest otherwise.

Mesut Ozil and Unai Emery have seemingly had a strained start to their relationship at Arsenal with the head coach apparently unhappy with how his playmaker has been performing.

There were even reports of a falling out between the two men but now, there are rumours which suggest otherwise.

ESPN’s Raphael Honigstein has claimed that Ozil has indeed been off ill after a severe cold developed into laryngitis.

The report also claims that the relationship between the two men is strong, so much so that Emery was keen on signing Ozil earlier this year and even met with the player while managing Paris Saint-Germain.

It’s unclear how accurate these reports are but it’s interesting to see the claims that Emery tried to sign Ozil earlier in the year. Perhaps things aren’t as bad between the two men as many seem to believe.

Mourinho confirms when United's new signing will be ready to play

Jose Mourinho has confirmed new signing Diogo Dalot will be ready to make his Manchester United debut after the international break.

The Portuguese made Dalot, who only has eight senior appearances at Porto, his first signing of the summer for a fee of around £19m.

He picked up meniscus injury in May, however, which required an operation and has precluded him from receiving any minutes on the pitch, although he has started training with the first team.

Speaking ahead of Man United’s meeting with Burnley this weekend, Mourinho confirmed Dalot would play for the Under 23s against Stoke City tonight ahead of returning to full match condition after the international break.

“Jones is injured, as you can imagine,” he said.

“Dalot and Romero will play tonight at Old Trafford in an Under-23s match, which is a first match for them after knee surgeries and they need that a little bit but it’s good news for them because after that it’s the international break and after that they’ll be in a real condition to play.

Marcos Rojo started training with the team a couple of days ago. He’s not ready for this match tonight but he is training with the team.”

Supporters have waited for some time to see what this youngster is about. It is not usual for Mourinho to move for a teenager with only eight senior appearances – especially one as attack-minded as Dalot.

The 55-year-old must have seen something special in him. There is clearly an aspect to his game he really admires. And he will be expected to hit the ground running at a time when United desperately need players to stand up on the pitch.

Chelsea drawn into favourable Europa League group

Chelsea have been drawn against PAOK in the Europa League group stage.

The Gunners one of the 12 top seeds in the draw and were drawn into Group L with Greek side PAOK drawn as the second team into the group.

BATE Borisov of Belarus were the next side drawn into Group L with Hungarian side Vidi, the final team drawn.

More to follow.

Chelsea turned down chance to sign French World Cup winner

Chelsea spurned the chance to sign Nabil Fekir, according to Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas.

The Frenchman had been linked to Liverpool this summer, with a deal agreed and contract signed before concerns about the midfielder’s knee stalled the deal at the final hurdle.

Carlos Rodrigues/Getty Images Sport

The Blues were reported to have been monitoring the situation, exploring the possibility of hijacking Liverpool’s transfer.

However, it seems they too rejected the chance to sign the 25-year-old.

The Mail report Aulas as saying:

In the beginning, when we thought about our summer transfer window and how to organise the future squad, we thought that he [Fekir] was practically gone.

That’s why we have been able to adapt things.

We spoke with Chelsea representatives, and they had no interest at all in him.

From then on, we realised we could change our plans [as he would stay].

A member of France’s World Cup winning squad, Fekir has made one appearance for Lyon so far this year, coming off the substitutes bench.

Chelsea willing to let forward leave as bid comes in for him

Aston Villa are making deadline day push to sign Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea, as per John Percy of The Telegraph.

Chelsea are willing to let the 20-year-old go out on loan, at least until January, and Villa are pushing hard to get a deal over the line.

Abraham, who has been capped twice by England, scored 23 goals in 41 Championship appearances when he was on loan at Bristol City during the 2016/17 season and Steve Bruce will be hoping that he can replicate that form if he does make a temporary switch to Villa Park.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

The striker spent last season on loan at Swansea City, scoring eight goals in 39 appearances in all competitions, and he’s looking for another loan move as he wants to play regular first-team football.

With the chances of getting into the Chelsea starting line up looking very slim, at best, a loan to Villa looks like a great move for all parties.

Shearer makes huge claims on Mourinho and Woodward relationship

Alan Shearer has made a huge claim about Ed Woodward and Jose Mourinho’s relationship and has called on the Manchester United players to rescue their manager from criticism.

The Portuguese boss has been consistently attacked but never more so than in recent weeks due to losses against Brighton and Tottenham.

The criticism began over the summer due to poor pre-season results but also due to the lack of top signings.

Mourinho made it clear Woodward is in charge of signings and it’s since then the relationship appeared fractured.

Shearer believes there’s no doubt over the disintegration of the relationship but has also called for the United stars to shut critics up.

According to the Daily Star, Alan wrote in Coral: “In football you don’t ask for respect, you earn it. When you look at his record at winning trophies, he has earned that.

“But the past is the past. He didn’t win anything last season and they have started off by having two poor games in the new campaign.

“I understand where Jose is coming from but his team have to answer the criticism for him.

“There is no doubt that the relationship between him and Ed Woodward is not great.”

Of course all the reports on Jose and Ed’s relationship are simply speculation and the former has insisted everything is fine.

Then again, the former Real Madrid man wouldn’t exactly outright say he has issues with the board unless he was trying to get sacked himself.

People are simply assuming Mourinho can’t be happy due to how he wanted two more signings after Fred, Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot but was left empty handed.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes has proven an unnecessary distraction to United who now risk their season ending early.

The reason for Sanchez's absence from Chile squad revealed

Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez has been left out of the latest Chile squad by manager Reinaldo Rueda due to the club advising him against it.

Many were shocked to hear the talented winger wouldn’t be taking part in the September internationals but he hasn’t been dropped for poor form.

Sanchez was one of United’s key performers in pre-season but has struggled to carry those performances into the season itself.

However, the Chilean also picked up a little knock so that could’ve affected his form and fitness.

Rueda confirms the medical staff at Old Trafford asked for Alexis to remain at the club rather than risk further complications.

According to Manchester Evening News, Reinaldo said to La Tercera: “It’s a recommendation from Manchester United’s medical staff.

“He’s been recovering… the suggestion was that he should not participate in these friendlies. Respecting that and what Alexis feels, we did not take him it into account for this call up.”

Hopefully the time off will do Sanchez well as Manchester United will need him if they are to have a good season.

He’s now had over six months to settle in to his new surroundings as well as a rare summer off.

The break seemed to do him well in the pre-season friendlies but he has to prove himself in the Premier League instead now.

United’s poor start wouldn’t have helped him but it’s fair to say fans haven’t seen him at his best just yet so there’s a need for him to improve.

Shaw makes decision on Man United future: report

Manchester United star Luke Shaw has made a decision on his future at the club, opting to avoid extending his contract for the time being.

The club must be desperate to tie the Englishman down, even if they decide to sell him later on for some reason, due to his contract running out next summer.

Shaw has been in fine form so far this campaign but even before that happened, it’s unusual he’s been allowed to enter the final year of his deal in the first place.

United now risk losing him for free and the youngster definitely has all the negotiating power.

Whether it’s Ed Woodward or Jose Mourinho to blame it’s unclear but the club have to put in more effort to protect their assets.

According to Manchester Evening News, the Mirror report that Luke’s representatives have told the Red Devils they won’t extend his contract until he’s happy with his playing time.

Talk of David de Gea and Anthony Martial committing themselves to the club have been ongoing for months now and fans are yet to see the result of that.

Hopefully Woodward can wrap up the deal for Shaw quickly since it’s more urgent but De Gea and Martial need to tied down as well.

Beckham reveals 'incredible' moment in his Man United career

Manchester United legend David Beckham has revealed winning the treble with the club was an incredible moment for him.

The Englishman was speaking during the Champions League draw and awards show where the club’s fate for the season was drawn.

United were grouped alongside Juventus, Valencia and Young Boys for a somewhat tricky Champions League group stage.

Beckham himself was reflecting upon his own European trophy win, calling it special.

The Red Devils remain the only English club to have won the treble so far and it’ll take some feat to repeat it again.

According to Manchester Evening News, David said: “There was many moments throughout my career, but winning the treble for Manchester United was an incredible moment.

“We created history and something so special for the club. Winning the Champions League the way we won it was so special.”

Manchester United have started the season poorly, losing two of their opening three fixtures but there’s time to turn things around.

Jose Mourinho will welcome the distraction of the September internationals and potentially the Champions League too.

United can use their European fixtures to try and build momentum so they can take it with them into their league form.

Grabbing all six points from Young Boys will prove crucial while avoiding defeat against Valencia is necessary.

Picking up three points against Juventus whether home or way would be a good job with the Italian’s arguably the favourites of the group.

Southgate reveals why he picked Shaw in latest England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed why he picked Manchester United star Luke Shaw in his latest squad, claiming the player has looked back to his best.

The Englishman has certainly kicked off the season well, impressing in fixtures even when his team doesn’t appear to be playing well.

Shaw had previously struggled to perform under Jose Mourinho but has put it all behind him, earning his manager’s trust.

With the youngster in fine form it’s difficult to see Ashley Young win his place back for club or country.

Southgate though simply focuses on Luke, praising him for his early performances and backing him to succeed.

According to The 42, Gareth said: “He has had a difficult period in adapting to a new club and a horrendous injury.

“I am impressed with his physical condition and he had an extra edge in recent games when it has been going against his team, looking back to his powerful best.

“We felt he can add that extra impetus in wide areas. I am really pleased for him that he looks like he is playing with confidence.”

There’s no doubt every United fan would love for Shaw to become the club’s left-back for the next decade but they must try to contain their excitement.

The defender definitely deserves praise but he must continue performing at a high level for some time to officially become the club’s first choice left-back.

Mourinho has a lot of trust in Young and should Luke’s performances drop, it’s quite likely the latter would be dropped for the former.

Either way, there’s high hopes for the former Southampton man and if there ever was a time to step up then it’s now.

Potential 3-4-1-2 vs Burnley: Exciting changes and electric pace in this team

Jose Mourinho faces a potentially career defining test against Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

The 55-year-old has lost consecutive league games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, conceding six goals in the process.

A third defeat to Burnley would, you suspect, force Ed Woodward and the club’s board to start thinking seriously about his position.

With that in mind, here is how Mourinho could line up for the visit to Burnley, with Marcos Rojo joining the back three after recovering from injury.

United played their best football with a back three against Spurs – albeit losing their firmness in the second half – and would be wise, and brave, to adopt a similar set-up at Turf Moor.

They set up in the same way for their 1-0 win over Sean Dyche’s men – who only have one point so far this season and will be coming off the back of a big Europa League qualifier this weekend – and it helped them control the game.

The key to stopping Burnley at home is, firstly, avoiding silly mistakes at the back and controlling the ball high up the pitch, preventing the hosts from making meaningful counter-attacks.

Mourinho will hope his back three, with Nemanja Matic at the base, can keep things calm, and afford Paul Pogba the chance to link up with Jesse Lingard and attacking pair Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to give United a desperately needed win.

From Italy: Juventus plotting January move for 22yo Man United star

Juventus are planning to make a bid for Anthony Martial in the January transfer window, according to reports from Italy.

Martial was tipped to leave Old Trafford earlier in the summer, with Juventus emerging as early favourites to sign the 22-year-old.

But the Frenchman has made a U-turn by recently entering talks with Manchester United over a new five-year contract.

Nevertheless, the Serie A champions, according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, are determined to sign Martial in the January transfer window having abandoned their interest over the summer.

Juventus understandably focused their efforts on securing the services of Cristiano Ronaldo to bolster their attack this summer – along with signing Leonardo Bonucci and Joao Cancelo – and consequently never made progress in a deal for Martial.

And they may well have missed their chance. Martial considered leaving in the summer but has since changed his mind in the belief that Jose Mourinho will be dismissed sooner rather than later.

Presenting Ed Woodward, hellbent on keeping Martial, with an acceptable offer may prove a fruitless task.

Gary Neville sends warning to Marcus Rashford

Gary Neville has called on Marcus Rashford to improve his performances at Manchester United following his quiet start to the 2018/19 campaign.

The youngster started in the club’s only win of the season so far against Leicester City but failed to have an impact in the box.

He has been reduced to substitute appearances in defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, during which he struggled to offer any improvement to poor team performances.

Speaking earlier this week, Neville demanded Rashford to show more if he was to secure a place in the starting XI.

“I’ll be honest with you, Marcus Rashford hasn’t done that well in the games he’s played,” he said.

“I love Marcus Rashford, but you watch his performance against Brighton on Sunday, or in the other game, he’s not been that great.

“I can’t sit here and be objective and honestly say that any Manchester United player that Jose Mourinho’s not picked deserved to be in.”

Rashford has indeed struggled to make an impact this season. Then again, who hasn’t?

Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard – aside from a good first half against Spurs – have all likewise lacked potency going forward, with only one goal between them after three games. Luke Shaw has been the best player in every match so far, which says plenty about the bewildering start to the 2018/19 campaign.

Picking on Rashford, therefore, when there is a greater systemic problem under Jose Mourinho feels misplaced.

Revealed: The four players Ed Woodward will never sell

Ed Woodward is unwilling to consider selling Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard during his time as vice-chairman at Manchester United, according to reports.

Martial has been tipped for an Old Trafford exit for some time but, as reported by several media outlets, has decided to enter talks with the club over a new five-year deal.

Shaw, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, was reportedly offered a new contract over the summer as well.

And according to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker, Woodward sees Shaw and Martial, along with homegrown duo Rashford and Lingard, as four ‘untouchables’ and will never even consider letting them leave during his time at the club.

Woodward is a man whose expertise lies in business – not football – decisions, but this is a start move for United commercially and on the pitch as well.

Martial is a potential ‘Galactico’ in the eyes of Woodward, while Shaw at his best is an irresistible force. And the idea of letting either Rashford or Lingard leave – given their roots and strong reputation among supporters – is not even worth considering.

Interestingly, however, there is no mention of Paul Pogba, David de Gea or Romelu Lukaku.

Luke Shaw receives reward for superb start at Man United this season

Luke Shaw‘s superb start to the 2018/19 season at Manchester United has been rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad – at the expense of teammate Ashley Young – for internationals next month.

The 23-year-old spent most of last season out of the squad as Young, who made 38 appearances in total, became a fixture at left-back and went on to excel for England at the World Cup in Russia.

But in the absence of Young, probably still feeling the effects of the summer, Shaw has stepped in at left-back and produced three superb performances on the left hand side, earning public praise from Jose Mourinho for his display in the 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, against whom he was Man United’s best player by some distance.

And is has been confirmed today that Southgate has omitted Young from the squad and drafted in Shaw for internationals against Spain and Switzerland next month.

Shaw’s last start for England came almost three years ago in a 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley. He has rarely looked like coming anywhere near another call-up since.

Until now. Shaw pushed himself harder than most over pre-season and has brought an unparalleled sense of energy to this fractured United team in the early stages of the campaign. He has relentlessly hauled himself out of anonymity and back into the frame for club and country – a living example of true hard work paying off.

Man United fans react to Champions League draw

Manchester United fans have reacted to the Champions League draw with some excitement despite being included in the same group as Juventus, Young Boys and Valencia.

The draw means Jose Mourinho’s men won’t have to travel anywhere far for their campaign but that doesn’t guarantee qualification to the next round.

The Italian champions will definitely be stern opposition and are even arguably the favourites of the group.

Valencia performed admirably in the La Liga last season and appear to be close to returning to their former glories.

Young Boys were Swiss champions by a comfortable margin but nonetheless United are expected to qualify to the next round.

Draws against Juventus and Valencia away from home would be deemed as decent results though the Red Devils would be expected to win both at Old Trafford.

Although Young Boys are predicted to prove a tough test, Mourinho’s men must pick up all six points against them if there’s any hopes of qualifying.

Manchester United haven’t started the season in their best form but the Champions League can offer a welcome distraction.

Zinedine Zidane didn’t have the best of seasons with Real Madrid last year when it came to the La Liga but winning the Champions League title meant his reputation was salvaged.

Chelsea face Liverpool away in Carabao Cup third round

Chelsea face a stern test in the third round of the Carabao Cup, as a trip to Anfield against Liverpool awaits them.

The Blues automatically enter in at this stage of the competition following their finish in the Premier League last season but will be matched with a fellow top six side in this early stage.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is sure to be keen on winning silverware in his first season at Stamford Bridge but a huge test awaits his Blues side, with Liverpool raring to go.

The clash between Liverpool and Chelsea is, without doubt, the headline clash of the third round, ensuring that at least one big English club will bow out at their first hurdle this year.

A date for the fixture has not yet been confirmed, but the clash will be played during the week beginning on Monday 24 September.

Jose Mourinho's stance on Anthony Martial's new contract confirmed

Jose Mourinho is “happy” with Anthony Martial‘s decision to enter negotiations with Manchester United over a new five year contract, according to reports.

Reports from several major media outlets claimed yesterday that the Frenchman, who has a fractured relationship with Mourinho, had begun talks with the club regarding a new deal.

Many have inferred that Ed Woodward’s decision to keep Martial at the club was indicative of Mourinho’s waning influence at Old Trafford, with his position under severe threat following consecutive Premier League defeats.

But according to the Mirror‘s Matt Slater, Mourinho is in fact pleased with news of the 22-year-old deciding to commit his future at Old Trafford.

The idea that Mourinho has been defied by Woodward is fictitious. It was confirmed by the BBC that the manager, contrary to the belief of many, had in fact been kept in the loop regarding the new deal.

That Martial is indeed looking to extend his future is not indicative of the player being valued more than Mourinho. The situation is not that black and white.

However, you can only imagine Martial signing on the dotted line if he believed, at some point this season, that Mourinho would be dismissed from his post at Old Trafford – a consensus which seems to be forming in the dressing room.

Champions League draw: Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford

Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Old Trafford this season after Manchester United drew Juventus, Valencia and Young Boys in the Champions League draw.

The five time Ballon d’Or winner, who left Man United in 2012, scored in both legs against his former club back in his only competitive appearance against them in 2012, with Real Madrid winning 3-2 on aggregate.

United last took on Valencia in 2011 – when they went to the final – and won 1-0 in the Mestalla before drawing 1-1 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

Young Boys, a club based in Bern, will play United for the first time in their history, with Mourinho facing Swiss opposition for the second consecutive season.

This is no easy group. Juventus possess one of the best home records in all of Europe and their visit to Old Trafford will be dominated by Ronaldo once again facing his old club. Paul Pogba will also go up against his past employers for the first time.

Valencia – who Andreas Pereira played for on loan last season – are a likewise dangerous opponent having undergone an impressive renaissance under Marcelino. The Mestalla is a landmark stadium with one of the best atmospheres in Europe.

Last year saw United walk through their Champions League group. They will have to battle hard to get out of this one.

Liverpool star explains why he rejected Manchester United in 2015

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane rejected an offer from Louis van Gaal at Manchester United in 2015 because he believed it was “not the right club” for him.

The Dutchman, heading into his second season at Old Trafford, made extensive efforts to sign Pedro from Barcelona, only for the winger to join Chelsea instead.

Mane ultimately moved to Liverpool from Southampton the following year, and has since claimed 36 goals on 76 appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking in an interview this week, Mane shed light on how he didn’t see Van Gaal’s United as the right fit for him in 2015.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “Some teams wanted me – Manchester (United), the wrong team wanted me.”

“Of course, I spoke with Van Gaal, and they even made an offer. But for me it was not the right club, it was not the right moment. To feel this – the right moment, the right coach, the right club.”

Mane is a player who – although it hurts to say – would significantly help United, a team which has for some time lacked a sense of direct running in the final third. The Senegal international, although often profligate, brings thrust and precision to attacks. At the very least he brings bums off seats.

His decision to avoid taking part in the 2015/16 season, therefore, was a smart one. He would not have felt at home playing in a team which spent all of its time passing aimlessly and playing with the tempo of a dying slug. Nobody would have done. Not even the dying slug, which would have probably wanted Van Gaal to play more direct.

Chelsea striker seals move away from Stamford Bridge

Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo has joined League One side Scunthorpe United on loan until January.

As confirmed on Scunthorpe’s official website, the 19-year-old will join up with the first-team squad and will wear the number nine jersey.

The forward spent time in the Championship with Barnsley and in League One with the MK Dons last season and he’ll spend the first part of the current campaign with The Iron.

The teenager has been at Chelsea since he was 10 years old but is yet to make an appearance for the club’s first-team, despite turning professional in 2015.

Speaking to the official website, Ugbo said:

I’m really pleased to sign for Scunthorpe and I can’t wait to start. I think it is a strong team here and good enough to go up this season. Hopefully, I can help with that.

It has been revealed that Unai Emery has banned his Arsenal players from consuming orange juice as part of a fitness shake-up (via The Mirror).

For decades, Arsene Wenger has been credited with something of a fitness renaissance at Arsenal ever since he took over as manager of the club.

The Frenchman instituted modern fitness and dietary techniques which improved the health and well being of many of his players.

Now, it seems as if the club’s new head coach Unai Emery is doing something similar with this current squad.

Reports suggest that Emery has taken the decision to ban fruit juice from the Arsenal training ground in an attempt to make his players healthier.

Orange juice is remarkably high in sugar despite its reputation as a healthy drink.

It’s an interesting move from the club and it comes at a time of tremendous change in the gym and conditioning setup. A lot has changed at Arsenal in recent months and this is just further evidence of it.

Chelsea star reaches agreement with European giants

Gary Cahill has reached an agreement in principle with Galatasary, according to Turkish outlet Fotomac.

The central defender has emerged to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with new manager Maurizio Sarri preferring a more modern breed of defender than the stoically traditional option of Cahill.

Various types of deals and destinations had been linked to Cahill, including loan opportunities at several Championship clubs.

Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Sport

However, it appears as though the 32-year-old will be heading abroad to get regular first team football this year.

The centre-half joined Chelsea in 2012, making the move from Bolton Wanderers.

With the Blues, Cahill won the Premier League twice, FA Cup once, League Cup once, Europa League once, and was a part of the famous Champions League winning side in 2012.

In six seasons in West London, Cahill has made 189 appearances for Chelsea, and was named club captain following the departure of John Terry.

A regular England choice as well, Cahill has received 61 England caps. Following the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Dronfield-native retired from international duty.

Chelsea midfielder named in England squad

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been named in the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Switzerland and the United States.

Despite seeming to be on the periphery of Chelsea’s squad, Loftus-Cheek has retained his place in the England squad from the World Cup.

Attained as a result of his strong performances whilst on loan at Crystal Palace last season, Loftus-Cheek was not in Russia simply to make up the numbers.

Clive Rose/Getty Images Sport

Appearing as a substitute against Tunisia in the opening match, Loftus-Cheek started against Panama and Belgium.

Impressing manager Gareth Southgate and Chelsea fans alike, much thought had been afforded to what role the 22-year-old would play in the Blues’ season this year; alternatively, whether he might be loaned out again.

Remaining a Chelsea player, it seems as though new boss Maurizio Sarri must have at least some plan for the England international this season, who will be hoping to receive his ninth cap for his country.

Leeds United in 'advanced talks' to sign Premier League star

Izzy Brown has already had four loan spells away from Chelsea and it looks like a fifth could be on the cards as Leeds United are in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old, as per Sky Sports.

Brown knows what it’s like to be part of a promotion-pushing side, having been at Huddersfield Town in 2017 as they earned a place in the Premier League.

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Sport

Brown, who can play as a striker, a winger or attacking midfielder, would provide Leeds with depth and allow them to rotate during the long slog of a Championship season.

Leeds have already taken both Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker on loan from Chelsea, but EFL rules allow them to take up to four players from one club, so they can still take Brown if all parties can agree to a move.

Brown was sent on loan to Brighton last summer but he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January and subsequently missed the rest of the season, so he’ll be keen to get back playing as soon as possible.

Chelsea star reveals best Blues player in training

Ross Barkley is shining in training, according to Victor Moses.

The midfielder has struggled for playing time since he joined Chelsea in January, although admittedly his cause was not helped by an inability to stay fit.

The 24-year-old made a £15 million move from his boyhood club Everton to join the Blues, and his confidence can’t be high seven months into his Chelsea career.

Paul Kane/Getty Images Sport

However, teammate Victor Moses has offered some words of support for the England international.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Moses revealed that Barkley is excelling in training sessions.

Asked who the best player in training had been, the Nigerian said:

Everyone has been good, everyone is working hard but I’d say Ross Barkley. He had a big injury but he’s started the season really well and he’s working his socks off.

Eager to make an impression on new boss Maurizio Sarri, Barkley appears to be on the right track.

BBC: Man United in talks with 22yo over major new contract offer

Anthony Martial has entered talks with Manchester United over a new contract, the BBC has confirmed.

The Frenchman’s relationship with Jose Mourinho has been strained for some time and it looked as if he would depart the club over the summer.

But the Times reported yesterday that Martial was considering signing a new deal at the club in the belief that he could outlast Mourinho at the club, which many perceived as a sign of the Portuguese’s diminishing influence at Old Trafford.

And the BBC‘s Simon Stone has indeed confirmed that the forward, left out of the squad against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, has entered talks with Man United over a new contract.

This development has been viewed by many as synonymous with Ed Woodward viewing the Frenchman as more valuable than Mourinho, who reportedly wanted Martial out of the club over the summer. At the very least, the club seems to see Martial as an asset with more long term promise than the current manager.

That said, Stone has insisted Mourinho was kept in the loop regarding the Martial situation. Whether he approved of it, however, remains a mystery.

Talks between Martial and United – first mentioned by French outlet RMC Sport on Monday – have been corroborated by the Telegraph‘s James Ducker as well.

Regardless of where Mourinho configures in all of this, it is clear Martial is only considering signing on the dotted line because he believes the 55-year-old’s days are numbered. That in itself is a scathing indication of where this club currently finds itself.

Manchester United great calls on supporters to get behind Mourinho

Ryan Giggs has called on Manchester United supporters to get behind Jose Mourinho following the side’s humiliation against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

The 55-year-old needed a result against Tottenham following one of the worst performances of his Man United tenure at Brighton and Hove Albion.

But after a promising first half, during which United should have gone ahead, the hosts crumbled as Spurs claimed three goals after the break, consigning Jose Mourinho to his heaviest home defeat as United manager.

Speaking as a fan, the current Wales manager emphasised the importance of sticking with the manager at such a challenging time.

“I was there on Monday as a United fan,” he said.

“It’s time for the fans to stick together, get behind the club, team and manager. It’s a tough time but we’ve had tough times before and got through it.”

There are a number of reasons to see Mourinho as the wrong man for the United job. That he has lost two of his first three Premier League games this season – something which last occurred in 1992 – is reason alone. The red lights are there, and they are flashing like they never have before.

And yet, at the same time, would the removal of the manager really elicit positive change? Would it really change anything? Supporters should only look back to how dismissals of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal changed very little in the grand scheme of things.

Mourinho will join those two at some point. Until then, however, United have to back their manager. Doing anything else would be an exercise in self-sabotage.

Huge boost as important United star returns and is fit for Burnley: report

Manchester United star Marcos Rojo will reportedly be ready for the club’s clash with Burnley this weekend.

The Argentine has been out due to injury but is apparently fit enough to be under consideration for a fixture Jose Mourinho will be desperate to win.

The Portuguese manager actually relied on Rojo during his first season at the club but has since used him sparingly.

The centre-back definitely struggled to return from the horrific injury he suffered in the Europa League final but he’s also hardly been considered for selection.

With Mourinho’s other defenders flailing, he may be tempted to once again rely on Marcos and secure a desperately needed win.

Normally fans wouldn’t consider a player who just returned to full training to be up for selection but Jose hasn’t been shy of throwing his players in the deep-end before.

Paul Pogba, Phil Jones and Romelu Lukaku among many other stars were all selected despite not having a pre-season and hardly being fit.

It could be argued those decisions have backfired since United have lost two of their three opening matches.

Nonetheless, only time will tell whether Rojo will play a part for the club this season or whether he’s their most dispensable option.

Ince reveals why Man United have started the season poorly

Former Manchester United man Paul Ince has explained just why the club have started poorly, comparing them to Liverpool for an example.

Jose Mourinho’s men have lost twice in their opening three fixtures having beaten Leicester while suffering defeats to Brighton and Tottenham Hotspurs.

United’s disappointing start has seen the Portuguese manager come in for hefty criticism and he’s now the favourite to be sacked first.

Ince believes it’s the club’s failure to attack well enough that’s costing them so far this season, pointing to Liverpool’s attack as the difference.

Mourinho has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to turn things around but fans definitely won’t be pleased to see their club compared with their fiercest of rivals.

According to the Daily Star, Paul said: “Liverpool drew players in during the transfer window where United didn’t, it seemed to me like they didn’t even want to come to United, and I’ve never known that.

“When you look at the two teams, they’re worlds apart in terms of scoring goals.

“There’s probably five players who can regularly find the net, when at United even their striker is struggling to put chances away.

“You can see why they’ve not started the season well when they can’t even score.”

Following the 3-2 defeat to Brighton, Jose’s men were criticised heavily for their lacklustre performance.

Against Tottenham they put on an admirable attacking display but failed to score in a 3-0 loss at home.

It seems Mourinho and his side have failed to find an adequate balance of solid defending and clinical attacking.

Some have put the blame solely down to the former Chelsea man while others believes he’s not the only reason for the poor start.

The lack of signings by the board in the summer has been criticised while the players themselves are at fault for underwhelming performances as well.

José Mourinho warned that it’s better to keep quiet

Sven-Goran Eriksson has warned Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho it’s better for him to keep quiet than to argue with the media.

The Portuguese manager has butted heads with the press for quite some time now as the relationship continues to disintegrate.

Mourinho has been heavily, and times unfairly, criticised and the tension has continued to rise.

The former Chelsea man opted to arrive 30 minutes early to a press conference in which he concluded it all with five minutes.

The media would then be caught on camera laughing as Jose asked for respect after the defeat to Tottenham and Eriksson believes it’s one battle one can never win.

According to the Express, Sven-Goran said: “Maybe [Mourinho deserves respect]. Maybe not. But I don’t think he should say it, I think that should be automatic.

“It’s always like that, when you are criticised as a coach – and I’ve been it many times in England, outside England and wherever – it’s better to keep quiet.

“Don’t try to defend yourself because the results defend yourself. It’s only by result you can defend it, and that’s in the paper, read it, don’t talk about it.

“Especially when you start to argue with the press, you will never win. You will always lose because if you are the journalist, you have the last word – you write it.”

Eriksson’s words are a little strange, almost as if he’s telling Mourinho to just give up entirely to the media.

The truth is there will always be a little friction between the two but both sides have a responsibility to ensure things go smoothly.

It’s the job of the press to report the truth and not put their personal opinion into matters while it’s Jose’s job to deliver that truth.

Nonetheless, things appear to be going down a path that’ll only end poorly but for who just yet it can’t be seen.

Midfield maestro's agent explains why he joined Man United, not City

Manchester United star Fred’s agent Gilberto Silva has revealed why his client signed for his current employers rather than Manchester City.

Back in the winter market, it became clear the Citizens were fighting hard for the Brazilian’s signature.

Thankfully for United, things didn’t quite work out for Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho ended up signing him this summer.

Fred hasn’t been at the club for long and clearly needs time to adjust but his talent has already shone through.

Silva has finally revealed just what happened and how come he ended up at Old Trafford instead of the Etihad.

According to Sport Witness, Gilberto said: “About Manchester City, he had the chance to leave in January but Shakhtar vetoed, there was no conversation.

“A good offer arrived, even bigger than the one from now. But Shakhtar understood that he was the most important player of the club.

“They didn’t want to negotiate, vetoed the exit. We did the planning which was to leave in the summer and he bought the idea. Everything we talked about, he understood the process, bought the idea.

“It was cool, because the conduct before Shakhtar within the negotiation was very correct. Professional conduct on our part and the part of him also, for not having lost his performance [after the failed move to Man City].

“It was a negotiation opportunity that was passing. We explained to him and we said the club would not let him go. We could fight, but I said we wanted to do it differently.”

Fred himself spoke about his eventually transfer to the Red Devils but it didn’t include quite that many details.

The midfielder had stated it was purely a passionate choice that made him choose the club and he wanted to work under Mourinho as well.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk man was supported by his family for the move to Manchester United and there’s hopes he can help lift the club up.

Unfortunately for Fred, Jose’s men are currently in a bit of a crisis but have plenty of time to make amends as only three matches have been played.

Mourinho sent strong message to Man United with bizarre decision

Pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Jose Mourinho made bizarre decisions for his Manchester United side during the clash with Tottenham Hotspurs.

The Portuguese manager oversaw his side’s 3-0 loss to the London club that continued the club’s poor start to the season.

United started in a formation that no one could figure out for a while until the game settled down.

Mourinho’s tactics saw his players enjoy a bright first half display but headed into the break tied nonetheless.

Carragher though states the former Chelsea manager’s tactical decisions were actually a sign of a more worrying aspect.

According to 101 Great Goals, Jamie said to talkSPORT: “I think it’s always a tell-tale sign when managers come under severe pressure, or they are having a bad time, when they do strange things when they pick a team.

“Picking Ander Herrera in a back-three – that, to me, is bizarre. He is not a centre-back and he hasn’t got tremendous height.

“He’s ok pace-wise, but you’re playing against one of the best centre-forwards in Harry Kane. As a back-three they were all over the place.

“They are the sort of things that you do as a manager when you’re under pressure. You make strange decisions. Against Brighton, for me, it looked like the team weren’t playing for the manager.”

Ander Herrera in central defence certainly sounds like a strange decision to make on paper but it’s not one Jose hasn’t done before.

The former Real Madrid man has previously tasked the Spaniard with man-marking jobs on players he believes are dangerous.

They’re typically players who are pacy and direct such as was done with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

Herrera had to deal with Lucas Moura but it turned out the Tottenham man was playing as a shadow striker.

This forced the midfielder to pretty much end up alongside Phil Jones and Chris Smalling but it was done for good reason.

Victor Lindelof gets seal of approval from former England manager

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson belives Victor Lindelof has what it takes to succeed at Manchester United.

The Swede, who enjoyed an excellent World Cup, has been guilty of a series of mistakes in defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

Jamie Carragher bluntly claimed after the Spurs defeat that Lindelof was simply not good enough for this level.

But Eriksson, speaking an interview earlier this week, disagreed with the former Liverpool defender.

“I have to say he did two great mistakes last match, and he was lucky he got away with them,” he said. “But you don’t expect that from him.”

“But we’re talking about a very good football player. For Sweden he’s been fantastic, they got to the [World Cup] quarter-final. He was important in qualification. He is a great player, no doubts about that.

“When you’re criticised as a player or a coach, life is difficult. You have to come back but if you don’t have the manager or the coach defending you, life is even more difficult, much more difficult.

“So I think me, now I’m talking about me, in all the teams I had if it’s a club, you have to defend your players at any cost because if you don’t do that, who is going to defend them? The wife, or the mother or father, yes but you have to stick with them.”

To be told by a former great of the English game that, quite simply, you aren’t good enough constitutes a miserable kick in the teeth. His performance against Spurs – sluggish at times, always jittery, never too far away from a mistake – did little to disprove that notion.

Carragher is right and wrong. We have all seen the core talent Lindelof possesses: his control, his elegance, his reading of the game, his confidence in possession. That talent to succeed at the top level is there. He started for Sweden at the World Cup for a reason. He was bought by Jose Mourinho for a reason.

Implicit his approach, however, lies an unmistakeable iota of shakiness. Some players have a mistake in them, as the saying goes. Lindelof is one of them. That can only be wiped out with experience, by being resolute in the Premier League sense. He does not have that now, and will need to develop it fast before the club – as they planned do to this summer – goes out and buys another defender.

Mourinho's replacement is ready, multiple Champions League winner: report

Zinedine Zidane is prepared to take over the reins at Manchester United once Jose Mourinho is dismissed, according to reports.

Mourinho finds himself under considerable pressure having lost two of Man United’s opening three games, suffering his worst ever home defeat as manager against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

Zidane, who left Real Madrid in May after delivering a third consecutive Champions League title, is the favourite to take over from the 55-year-old.

And according to the Mirror‘s David Anderson, Zidane is keen on the prospect of taking over at United and believes he can engender a sense of stability to a squad currently in the process of capitulation.

The club remains behind Mourinho at this time and believe in his ability to turn the team’s fortunes around, but that is unlikely to last. Defeat at Burnley would force Ed Woodward to start asking some serious questions.

And the Frenchman, whose stock is sky high after dominating Europe with Real for a record three years in a row, believes he can improve this team, and is said to be impressed with the financial backing provided by the Glazers to Louis van Gaal and Mourinho – much more than what Florentino Perez entrusted him with at the Bernabeu.

Man United fans react to Martial's impending contract extension

Manchester United fans were certainly ecstatic following the latest reports claiming Anthony Martial is set for a new five year contract.

The Frenchman appeared set to leave the club following his fractured relationship with Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager was also said to be willing to sell Martial but wasn’t allowed to by the board.

Whatever was going on behind the scenes, it appears the winger’s future will now be at Old Trafford.

Anthony’s agent had stirred up a storm during the summer when he claimed his client wanted to leave following a break down in contract negotiations.

It’s believed the United board wanted to extend Martial’s contract a while ago but nothing came to be.

This then angered the former AS Monaco man and his agent and so the rumours began before the released statement.

However, it now seems as though everything will finally be put to bed though supporters would be wise to hold on until official news is released.

Once the club announce his extension then fans can be as happy or excited as they like.

Anthony has plenty of work ahead of him though to prove his worth to Mourinho, who doesn’t seem too keen on playing him regularly yet.
