Luke Shaw‘s superb start to the 2018/19 season at Manchester United has been rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad – at the expense of teammate Ashley Young – for internationals next month.
The 23-year-old spent most of last season out of the squad as Young, who made 38 appearances in total, became a fixture at left-back and went on to excel for England at the World Cup in Russia.
But in the absence of Young, probably still feeling the effects of the summer, Shaw has stepped in at left-back and produced three superb performances on the left hand side, earning public praise from Jose Mourinho for his display in the 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, against whom he was Man United’s best player by some distance.
And is has been confirmed today that Southgate has omitted Young from the squad and drafted in Shaw for internationals against Spain and Switzerland next month.

Shaw’s last start for England came almost three years ago in a 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley. He has rarely looked like coming anywhere near another call-up since.
Until now. Shaw pushed himself harder than most over pre-season and has brought an unparalleled sense of energy to this fractured United team in the early stages of the campaign. He has relentlessly hauled himself out of anonymity and back into the frame for club and country – a living example of true hard work paying off.
