England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed why he picked Manchester United star Luke Shaw in his latest squad, claiming the player has looked back to his best.
The Englishman has certainly kicked off the season well, impressing in fixtures even when his team doesn’t appear to be playing well.
Shaw had previously struggled to perform under Jose Mourinho but has put it all behind him, earning his manager’s trust.
With the youngster in fine form it’s difficult to see Ashley Young win his place back for club or country.
Southgate though simply focuses on Luke, praising him for his early performances and backing him to succeed.
According to The 42, Gareth said: “He has had a difficult period in adapting to a new club and a horrendous injury.
“I am impressed with his physical condition and he had an extra edge in recent games when it has been going against his team, looking back to his powerful best.
“We felt he can add that extra impetus in wide areas. I am really pleased for him that he looks like he is playing with confidence.”
There’s no doubt every United fan would love for Shaw to become the club’s left-back for the next decade but they must try to contain their excitement.
The defender definitely deserves praise but he must continue performing at a high level for some time to officially become the club’s first choice left-back.
Mourinho has a lot of trust in Young and should Luke’s performances drop, it’s quite likely the latter would be dropped for the former.
Either way, there’s high hopes for the former Southampton man and if there ever was a time to step up then it’s now.
