Wes Brown reveals where Manchester United should invest in next

Manchester United great Wes Brown has revealed just who he wants his former side to sign in the upcoming January transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to bring in a fresh face or two but only if the right players become available for the right prices.

United have showed restraint under the legendary Norwegian’s management and they have been calculated in their transfers so far.

All three of Solskjaer’s signings in Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James have walked right into the starting XI and have been impressive so far.

However, investment is necessary so the question becomes just what are of the field does the Red Devils’ attention need to be turned to the most?

According to 888Sport, Brown said: “I think Ole will try and buy in January. United need another striker and an attacking midfielder, that little wizard number 10.

“The defence is fine. The goalkeepers are fine. The ideal thing would be two strikers and two midfielders. If only it was that easy!

“Grealish in the last few games has come on immensely. He can always see the pass. Maddison has always been good and he’s a threat getting into the box.

“These are two young English players who would definitely help the squad.”

An attacking-midfielder is definitely needed but if Fred and Scott McTominay continue to perform impressively alongside each other then it may free up Paul Pogba to play that role.

If it does then it may be the case that Manchester United would need to invest in squad depth rather than improving their starting XI but it is a big if.

The aforementioned pair have shown good form of late but it would be risky to gamble on them performing outstandingly all season long.

4-2-3-1: Man United's strongest possible team to face Bournemouth

Manchester United fans will be interested to see whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opts for three at the back once again when they meet Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

The Norwegian employed the system against Liverpool and up until about 60 minutes of the 2-1 win over Chelsea, when he decided to revert to a 4-2-3-1 arrangement.

That same shape was used to devastating effect during the 3-1 win over Norwich City as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford started together for the first time since August.

Here is what a starting XI against Eddie Howe’s side could therefore look like.

Solskjaer appears to have located his ideal front four, with Daniel James making bursting diagonal runs from the right touchline while Rashford, over on the other side, works closer with Martial.

The pair have the ability to interchange – one on the touchline and the other stretching defenders – in order to create gaps in behind for Andreas Pereira to exploit with his close control and solid passing.

And yes, I know many would like to see Brandon Williams starting again after the youngster’s showing at Stamford Bridge, but managers rotate players for a reason.

Marcus Rashford, Marcos Rojo, Anthony Martial and Daniel James have all been pictured arriving at Carrington on Thursday morning.

The quartet all featured during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup, with Rashford scoring a double that included a sumptuous free kick.

Having not won an away game in six months, United have now won three games on the road in the space of six days.

The aforementioned four were seen arriving at the Carrington training complex ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Bournemouth.

The best photos from Chelsea 1-2 Manchester United

Marcus Rashford made headlines across the world after his sensational free kick handed Manchester United a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the EFL Cup.

The 20-year-old had earlier converted a penalty – dispelling the demons of Norwich City a few days earlier – before Michy Batshuayi equalised as Chelsea started to dominate.

Following a formation change from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rashford hit the most perfect knuckleball free kick you will ever see to seal the game on 73 minutes.

Here are the best photos from an excellent night for United.

Hector Bellerin has said that he was left “very gutted but very proud” by the defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night (via Arsenal.com).

It was one of the most extraordinary matches Arsenal have played in recent years but it ended in disappointment on Wednesday night.

Ten goals were split evenly in the Carabao Cup tie but Arsenal were knocked out on penalties in the end.

Hector Bellerin captained the Gunners on the night and after the match, gave his reaction to the narrow defeat.

“I have to say it was great to play this kind of game,” Bellerin said after the match.

“Loads of mistakes from both sides and those are things that we’ve got to look at and analyse and you know we’ve got to get better at it.

“The tempo of the play, the goals… this is football. This is what you play football for, for nights like this. Whatever the score, today we’re gutted, but I’m sure there’s going to be nights that go in our favour.

“This is the thing, when you’ve been so close to winning and you lose at the end, it hurts. But this is what pushes you to do better in the next game.

“So as I say, very gutted but very proud as a team because from the start we went for the game, we went for the win.”

Hector Bellerin put in a good performance on the night. The Spaniard is getting back to full fitness and will hopefully be returning to the Premier League side soon.

Unai Emery has revealed why he decided to substitute Mesut Ozil after just 60 minutes in the defeat to Liverpool last night (via Arsenal.com).

Arsenal fans have been calling out for Mesut Ozil to return to the Arsenal first team and they got their wishes last night.

The German started the match and put in a fine performance, grabbing an assist and having a hand in a few other goals.

To the bemusement of many, Ozil was substituted with just 60 minutes on the match and now, Unai Emery has explained his decision.

“We decided before the game to only play him for that amount of time,” Emery said.

“I think in that moment it is good to make that decision as we were calm and he did the work very well and we decided it was better to rest him.

“We spoke before the match, and we made the decision in the second half to take him off because he hasn’t played for a little while and we want to keep his fitness as he was very tired but for him it was great to play 60/65 minutes.

“We have a match on Saturday and we will look at the possibility to use him again alongside other players and this is the way sometimes.”

It was great to see Mesut Ozil back on the pitch last night. The former Germany international put in an excellent performance on the night and it was a shame to see him come off, it’s understandable given his lack of playing time. Let’s hope Ozil is back on Saturday.

Man Utd fans have had enough, want this attacker gone in January

Manchester United fans are not impressed with Jesse Lingard‘s performances, especially given the length of time he’s failed to improve in.

The versatile attacker is closing in on a year without any significant output, notching just a single assist and goal- less than the deeper, more holding midfielder in Scott McTominay.

Lingard is highly rated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and fans have long struggled to understand why, with calls for Angel Gomes to replace him starting quite a while back.

Even during the pacy Englishman’s purple patch of form there was debate over whether he’s good enough to be a regular starter or a squad player.

Lingard’s issues can no longer be considered as poor form as it’s been far too long to be considered as a small sample of performances.

It appears his purple patch of form was an exception to his talent and isn’t the kind of performances he can put in on a regular basis.

There’s been plenty of talk of Manchester United needing an attacking midfielder and it’s justified given their struggles to break down stubborn opposition.

Lingard’s been so poor it’s even becoming difficult to argue that he should be kept on as a squad player with the likes of Andreas Pereira and Gomes offering more in terms of potential and actual performances.

Proof: Solskjaer's excellent record against the top six shows his managerial ability

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is slowly but surely edging towards his managerial appointment anniversary so it’s the perfect time to look back at how well he’s done since arriving.

It’s also helpful that he’s managed to overseen three wins on the bounce after a poor start to the season with all three coming away from home.

United were dangerously close and flirting with the relegation zone at one point in the season but now find themselves in seventh place and in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Of course there’s a long way to go but it’s an improvement on the doom and gloom from just a few weeks ago.

A lot of criticism has been levelled at Solskjaer and some rightfully so but there’s a lot of good things he’s done he hasn’t been given credit for.

Obviously Solskjaer will be looking to put in more wins but it’s impressive that despite all of Manchester United’s woes and their turbulent end to last season and beginning of this season, they’ve only managed to lose twice in 11 games to top six opposition.

It’s also likely once the legendary Norwegian has the kind of players he wants in his starting XI then he’ll be able to pull off more victories for supporters.

5 interceptions, 5 tackles: Man Utd midfield star MOTM by miles against Chelsea

Marcus Rashford will understandably steal the headlines after his sensational double guided Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The youngster calmly scored a penalty ahead of scoring one of the best free kicks you will ever see with 20 minutes left to send Man United into the quarter-finals.

Sitting behind him, though, was the real hero of the game – a man whose power and sheer relentlessness gave United a platform to win the game.

Enter, Scott McTominay.

The numbers don’t really do it justice. For every loose ball or dangerous situation, McTominay was there, ready for a piece of it, and usually getting plenty.

Midfielders need to have a presence. Jose Mourinho, McTominay’s biggest fan, was a big believer in this. The midfielder has to exude strength and control – without boiling over.

At Stamford Bridge, McTominay was the alpha dog of the midfield battle, looking bigger than everyone in a literal and indeed figurative sense. The intelligence with which he pressed and closed down space in behind him was the sign of a player assuming a senior role.

Mourinho may have been wrong about a lot of things at Old Trafford, but he knows a player when he sees one. McTominay – make no mistake – is a player.

Picture: McTominay's incredible celebration shows how much the win means to him

Manchester United star Scott McTominay couldn’t contain his emotions during the 2-1 win over Chelsea, celebrating just as much as the fans did after Marcus Rashford netted the winner.

The young Scotsman has grown tenfold in Paul Pogba’s absence with his form not letting up since his brilliant pre-season.

Question marks were raised after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to invest in his engine room but McTominay has stepped up tremendously to ease some of the fears.

Against Chelsea, the academy product was at his brilliant best, helping his side maintain momentum with it now being three wins on the bounce.

While he has been impressive, McTominay must keep up his performances so he can continue turning his unlimited potential into talent.

McTominay’s influence has been so great that even the shaky Fred has been growing in confidence playing alongside him.

Whisper it quietly but Manchester United are slowly adapting to playing without Pogba and much of that has to do with how the aforementioned pair have been.

Hopefully by the time the injured Frenchman returns, he’ll be joining a settled, in-form side rather than the mess he experienced before missing matches.

It’s easy to see just why Jose Mourinho was adamant on publicly praising McTominay so much and the hope is the dream can continue happening.

'That's a special, special hit!'- Man Utd fans react to Rashford's winner vs Chelsea

Manchester United fans couldn’t believe their eyes after Marcus Rashford netted his side’s winner vs Chelsea from a ridiculous long-range free-kick.

The young Englishman has been heavily criticised in the past for taking charge of set-pieces only to fail miserably.

Rashford’s knuckleball technique often means the ball sways wildly out of play but on occasion, such as today, it gloriously nestles in the back of the net.

United were in desperate need of some magic having lost their lead in a rather frustrating manner and the academy product stepped up big time.

Rashford’s effort means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men now have three wins on the bounce with all three being away wins as well.

Momentum is building for Solskjaer and if the Red Devils can keep it up, they should be climbing into the Champions League qualification spots soon enough.

Although they have been poor in the early stages of the season, it’s safe to say they didn’t deserve to be as low as 15th in the table and a win last weekend saw them jump up to 7th.

A few wins on the trot should see Manchester United back in contention for a top four spot, particularly with Arsenal and Tottenham’s woes of late.

Player ratings: Sensational Rashford strike downs Chelsea

Sergio Romero 5 – Could have moved quicker for Chelsea’s goal. Had little to do aside from that.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Very disciplined performance. Chelsea hardly bothered to attack down his side. Such an accomplished defender.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Had a decent opening 45 minutes but was too slow for Chelsea’s equaliser and came off with an injury.

Harry Maguire 6 – Patrolled the back relatively well but was at fault for Chelsea’s equaliser, missing the header and then failing to get back.

Marcos Rojo 5 – A chaotic display from a chaotic man. Too slow for the equaliser and did not help Williams enough

Brandon Williams 7 – This was a real test for the youngster and he came through it remarkably well. Chelsea targeted his side with overloads and the teenager kept his cool.

Scott McTominay 7 – Indomitable. Every 50/50 seemed to be won by this man, who was imperious in the middle throughout.

Fred 6 – Another promising display. Too slow in possession at times but his radar is clearly very good. Needs more minutes.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Had some decent touches at No.10 but overall failed to make an impression on the game. Looks very rusty.

Daniel James 7 – The Welshman is better than many United fans thought. His running was viscerally quick but also intelligent, as seen through how he won another penalty in the first half.

Marcus Rashford 8 – Remember when people were doubting this guy? Banished the penalty ghosts by rolling one past Willy Caballero and then hit the sweetest free kick you will see from about 35 yards.

Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties after an extraordinary 5-5 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

—–
Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Liverpool v Arsenal
Venue: Anfield, Liverpool
Kick-Off (UK Time): 19:30 30/10/2019
—–

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Emiliano Martinez – 3

It wasn’t a night for goalkeepers and for Emiliano Martinez in particular. The Argentinean stopper couldn’t have done much more to keep out some of the goals this evening but he certainly should’ve done better with both of Divock Origi’s strikes.

Hector Bellerin – 6

He put in a decent performance. Hector Bellerin is improving with each passing match and it was good to see the Spaniard get another 90 minutes under his belt.

Rob Holding – 5

Rob Holding has put in better performances. The Englishman was error-prone at times this evening and his passing was uncharacteristically sloppy.

Shkodran Mustafi – 4

Shkodran Mustafi had the worst possible start to this match with that own goal. The German’s night did improve but not by a great deal.

Sead Kolasinac – 5

He has been better. Sead Kolasinac was quiet in the first half but saw a little more of the ball after that. He didn’t look up to the test and his late substitution could provide an explanation as to why.

Sub: Kieran Tierney (83′) – 6

He did well enough in the closing minutes. Kieran Tierney put in a couple of trademark crunching tackles.

Lucas Torreira – 7

Lucas Torreira put in a decent performance in midfield. He took his goal well and popped up in a number of different areas across the pitch. His touch and passing was reliable and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him step into the first-team this week given the Granit Xhaka controversy.

Sub: Dani Ceballos (70′) – 6

He did okay. Dani Ceballos kept the ball well enough in the final 20 minutes.

Joe Willock – 8

Joe Willock really grew into this match. He started slowly but was one of Arsenal’s biggest attacking threats in the second half. He scored a wonderful goal and very nearly added a few more to go with it. It was encouraging to see after he was taken off in the first half of last week’s Europa League match.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 7

Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ best moments came in an attacking sense. He grabbed a goal and had a major role in another to cap a solid attacking performance. The Englishman had some shakier moments at the other end. He was slow to react to danger in the run-up to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal.

Bukayo Saka – 7

He won’t grab the headlines but Bukayo Saka impressed on that right flank. He grabbed an impressive assist to cap a hardworking and combative performance. Another 90 minutes for the 18-year-old can only be a good thing.

Mesut Ozil – 9

What a performance from Mesut Ozil. He was at his exceptional best on the night and oozed class with every single touch of the ball. The playmaker did what he does best, creating chances and starting moves. His assist for Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the highlight of a memorable night for the former Madrid man. Let’s hope that his substitution is an indication that he will be starting the Premier League on Saturday.

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (65′) – 6

It was a shame to see Mesut Ozil leave the pitch tonight but Matteo Guendouzi steadied the ship. The Frenchman impressed in the centre of the park and brought some much-needed balance to the midfield. The only issue was that he should’ve done a little better with that fifth goal.

Gabriel Martinelli – 8

It was another stellar performance from Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian just has a knack of scoring goals and added another two to his growing Arsenal tally. He could have scored a few more in the second half but that shouldn’t detract from what was yet another impressive performance.

Kick-Off (UK Time): 19:30 30/10/2019

Arsenal have had more than their fair share of woeful performances at Anfield in recent years and this one didn’t start much better. Former Gunner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain broke clear down the right and crossed into the box. Shkodran Mustafi was the man to meet it but the former Germany international couldn’t sort his feet out and slid the ball into the back of the net for an own goal.

The game petered out in the moments that followed but Arsenal soon found their footing. Mesut Ozil started to see more of the ball and the Gunners settled.

It was the German who found space in the ball to cross the ball for Bukayo Saka whose low shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Fortunately, the rebound fell straight for an unmarked Lucas Torreira to tap in and equalise.

Arsenal were on top and soon had some more luck down the right flank. Ainsley Maitland-Niles burst past Divock Origi to cross low. Again, a shot was saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper and again, a Gunners man found the rebound. Only this time it was Gabriel Martinelli who finished high and hard to put Arsenal in front.

Arsenal were dominating the match and soon found a third. Ozil won the ball high up the pitch and played a smart ball for Saka to move onto down the left. The Englishman looked up and saw an unmarked Martinelli in the centre of the pitch who made it 3-1 after an accurate cross.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Gunners. With five minutes to go in the first half, Martinelli put in a late challenge in his own box and the referee pointed straight to the spot. James Milner stepped up to make it 3-2.

There was very nearly a sixth goal in this wonderful first half of football with chances at both ends. First, Gabriel Martinelli failed to get the power on a header after being left unmarked before Divock Origi powered his header over the bar from a similar opportunity.

The second half went on in very much the same way as the first had ended. Both sides pressed forward for goals but Arsenal looked a little more potent in their offensive moves.

It was a game characterised by mistakes and Liverpool were the next to make one. James Milner under-hit a backpass and Maitland-Niles seized on it. The Englishman’s first touch was too heavy but Mesut Ozil raced onto the ball and played it back to Maitland-Niles with an audacious flick to make it 4-2.

But the game was far from over. The former Arsenal man Oxlade-Chamberlain soon get in on the action. He controlled the ball 30 yards from goal before unleashing a wonderful volley past Emiliano Martinez in goals.

There was a little under 30 minutes left in this match when it got its eighth goal. Divock Origi found some space and squeezed a shot under Emiliano Martinez to make it 4-4. The Arsenal stopper will be disappointed with his attempt.

People would be forgiven for thinking that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s half-volley would be the best goal of the match but Joe Willock soon upstaged up. The Englishman drove forward with the ball from the halfway line before whipping a shot into the top corner to make it 5-4.

The game slowed down in the following minutes. Arsenal brought on some substitutions in an attempt to kill this most incredible of matches. But unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. A simple cross came in from the left flank and Divock Origi found time and space to make it 5-5 in added time.

The match went to penalties and after a nearly-perfect run for both sides, Dani Ceballos’ effort was saved to send Arsenal home.

Confirmed starting XI Chelsea vs. Man United: Williams starts

Brandon Williams has been handed another start for Manchester United’s meeting with Chelsea in the EFL Cup this evening.

The 19-year-old left-back impressed supporters with his performance during Man United’s 1-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade last week.

Jesse Lingard, who is coming back from injury, replaces Andreas Pereira in the No.10 role, while Sergio Romero takes the place of David de Gea.

Here is the full starting lineup and bench ahead of the clash at Stamford Bridge.

It’s a Carabao Cup match on a night which will surely be dominated by off-the-field talk and the sour situation at Arsenal right now.

The dispute between Granit Xhaka and the Gunners supporters has still not been resolved despite Unai Emery’s best efforts this week.

It was never likely that Xhaka would feature in this game but he hasn’t been named in the squad for this Carabao Cup tie.

The Gunners are at Anfield to take on a much-changed Liverpool side, hoping for a better result than the 3-1 defeat they experienced earlier in the season.

This competition isn’t at the top of the list of priorities for Arsenal and Unai Emery but it would represent a nice bonus if the Gunners can go on a run.

Here’s how the two sides line up for this match:

Arsenal

Emiliano Martinez

Hector Bellerin

Rob Holding

Shkodran Mustafi

Sead Kolasinac

Lucas Torreira

Joe Willock

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Bukayo Saka

Mesut Ozil

Gabriel Martinelli

Subs: Macey, Sokratis, Tierney, Guendouzi, Ceballos, Pepe, Lacazette

Liverpool

Caoimhín Kelleher

Neco Williams

Joe Gomez

Sepp Van Den Berg

James Milner

Adam Lallana

Naby Keita

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Harvey Elliott

Divock Origi

Rhian Brewster

Subs: Adrian, Jones, Kane, Laroucci, Chirivella, Clarkson, Koumetio

Man United’s search for January striker signing takes another big twist

Manchester United’s reported desire to sign Juventus star Mario Mandzukic has taken yet another twist as a bizarre reason is revealed as to why the deal may be off.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be looking for a forward to join his rather thin squad and the experienced Croatian was thought to be the ideal signing.

Not only would he be cheap but he also brings firepower and a sense of leadership to an otherwise youthful squad.

Fans in general supported the deal though there’s a feeling that more investment elsewhere would be needed as well.

Juventus were also believed to be open to a deal happening though they’ve been notoriously difficult to deal with in the past.

According to Calcio Mercato, the Red Devils are willing to pay Mandzukic’s over €5m salary demands but are unwilling to fork over €5.3m asking price as they feel they should be able to sign an unwanted player such as himself for free.

After all, the former Bayern Munich star hasn’t featured at all this season and it’s clear he’s surplus to Juventus’ plans.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala amongst their firepower, it’s tough to imagine where Mandzukic fits in.

Equal with Aubameyang and Salah: Man United’s surprisingly important striker

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford can rightfully look at his statistics for the season and wonder why he’s received so much criticism despite having a decent output.

Fans mostly jumped on the young Englishman’s back due to his uninspiring performances as a striker but the context of it all is how poorly the team were playing overall.

Supporters also believe in Rashford and so constantly have high expectations of him as they feel he can continuously do better.

The academy product though can be proud with how he’s done so far as he’s netted five times and assisted thrice in 10 Premier League games this season.

Not many 21 year olds can boast such figures and the likelihood is it’s only going to get better the more United improve overall.

Not only is Rashford putting in decent figures but he’s also scoring crucial goals much to critics’ astonishment.

Many fans felt Romelu Lukaku could never be a Manchester United player as it felt as though he never really netted at important times.

Robin van Persie wasn’t at Old Trafford for long but he cemented his place in fans’ hearts due to how he almost singlehandedly won the club’s 20th Premier League title.

Man United great reveals the difference between Solskjaer and predecessors

Manchester United great Ryan Giggs has revealed the main difference between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his predecessors Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes.

The legendary Welshman believes the former prolific striker hasn’t been backed as well as the club’s former managers and has called for more money to be made available to him.

Solskjaer brought in just three players in what was meant to be the start of his revolution despite letting go of many first-team stars.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James were signed and while all have impressed so far, it’s clear more was needed.

It’s believed Solskjaer wanted more as well but was ultimately let down by an incompetent board much to the frustrations of fans.

According to Manchester Evening News, Giggs said: “We need to bring quality in. Ole has brought three in who are all doing well. His dealings have been very good so far.

“Give him the money other managers have had to get Man United players.

“Get another five or six players like that in, we will see a real difference.

“They are missing that creative player. It is no coincidence, the best performances have been against good teams. The lesser teams are always harder to break down.

“We are probably just a bit shy of them creative players and I think Ole recognises that.”

Manchester United have enjoyed the best of starts this season which has seen Solskjaer quickly come under pressure but there are hopes they’ve turned a corner after back to back wins vs Partizan and Norwich.

With players slowly but surely returning from injury as well, it should mean the club are more capable and carry on climbing up the table.

Only qualification for next year’s edition of the Champions League can be considered as progress but much of it relies on keeping an already thin squad fit.

Solskjaer reveals how he plans to replace absent Pogba

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has laid much of his hope on the doors of Andreas Pereira and Fred in regards to stepping up in Paul Pogba’s absence.

The talented Frenchman will be out of action until December if all things go well so the legendary Norwegian has quite the hole to fill.

Fred and Pereira play in different roles but it’s clear Solskjaer is hoping the combined creativity out of the pair will be enough to replace Pogba.

United couldn’t have asked for a more awful problem to have given their current issues and their lack of midfield reinforcement in the summer has certainly come back to haunt them.

However, back to back wins against Partizan and Norwich hints at the beginning of a good run of form if they can keep up their performances.

According to Gulf Today, Solskjaer said: “I think his energy and drive – the two Brazilians to be fair, Fred and Andreas – they are going to be important for us.

“Fred will probably take Paul’s position for a while now and that’s been brilliant for us. But Andreas has grown in the last few games. His energy and running, chasing, he is a different sort of 10.

“There is no use talking about who is not going to be here for a long, long time… Paul’s been brilliant and he is a creative midfielder that we need, but then it is up to the others to step up.”

Pereira was certainly more effective playing as an attacking-midfielder having been shunted out wide for much of the season so far.

In fact the academy product was beginning to be the source of frustrations for fans who felt Solskjaer should recognise his inability to play on the flanks.

Meanwhile Fred has slowly but surely improved of late as his partnership alongside Scott McTominay continues to grow.

Solskjaer reveals which two academy starlets will potentially play vs Chelsea

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted at who may start the Carabao Cup clash vs Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The legendary Norwegian is in desperate need of some form of silverware if their Premier League campaign is going to carry on as it has so far and what better competition is there?

The Blues are a completely different side to the one United dismantled 4-0 last time but Solskjaer will be hoping for a repeat nonetheless.

Frank Lampard’s men have improved tenfold since and are currently in their best run of form of the season.

The Red Devils may be tempted to prioritise the Premier League but defeating Chelsea in a cup competition could go some way in terms of momentum.

According to the club’s official website, Solskjaer said: “For just 10, 15 minutes tonight Jimmy played as well.

“I thought he was excellent, because he’s calmed us down when we wanted to see the game out.

“So we’ve not made a decision on who is going to play [at Chelsea] but you’ll probably see the two of them [Garner and Williams].”

Fans have grown to quickly love Brandon Williams in particular after some strong showings though many acknowledge James Garner’s incredible potential.

The latter hasn’t gotten as many minutes as the former but that might change on Wednesday night after his impressive cameo appearance vs Norwich last weekend.

Williams’ performances have been so good many fans believe he can seriously challenge Luke Shaw for a starting XI berth and Solskjaer seemed to hint so as well.

Representative of sensational midfielder holds meetings with Man United

Manchester United have reportedly taken the first steps in their efforts to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s need for a midfield reinforcement is well known with some fans even calling for it to happen in January.

Paul Pogba’s injury has been a wakeup call for United as their engine room has looked woefully short of quality and quantity.

Reports have also emerged over Nemanja Matic’s potential departure to Inter Milan this winter so perhaps it’s even more urgent to bring in a midfielder.

Zakari fits Solskjaer’s transfer policy of signing emerging talent so it’s not a rumour that’s completely farfetched.

Arsenal are more or less in the same boat as the Red Devils but it will be difficult to fight off Liverpool’s interest, particularly if they win the Premier League this season.

Even if they don’t and Solskjaer’s men fail to qualify for Champions League football, it can still prove to be a tough ask.

Scott McTominay has proven to be a potential star himself and Fred has slowly but surely improved in Pogba’s absence.

However, that’s not enough to survive on and a midfielder is needed though it could be argued an attacking-midfielder is more urgent.

Gallery: A big call in midfield as Chelsea host United in the cup - Our predicted Blues XI

Chelsea responded to claims of burnout in emphatic style as Christian Pulisic’s perfect hat-trick saw the Blues romp home to a seventh successive victory and laid the groundwork for rotation in the upcoming weeks. Both Pulisic, now the youngest player to score a Premier League hat-trick for Chelsea and Reece James shone under the floodlights at Turf Moor and their impressive adaptation has shown Frank Lampard that he has the strength in depth to rest senior members of the squad without compromising the successful implementation of his system.

Wednesday’s opposition Manchester United present a potentially treacherous proposition for the Blues, with the sides contrasting form it would seem easy to forget the ease at which United exploited Chelsea’s high line through the use of willing runners in behind. Granted much has changed since Marcus Rashford captured the imagination of all inside Old Trafford on the opening weekend, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a nack of dominating the midfield battle when his side goes toe to toe with Chelsea.

18-year-old midfielder Billy Gilmour has been touted with replacing Jorginho against United and could be faced with a baptism of fire should Solskjaer opt to prioritise cup competitions as a means by which to gain silverware and a modicum of credibility for his wavering managerial career.  Batshuayi, who missed out on a starting spot against Burnley despite his match-winning display against Ajax will also be vying for more minutes.

Unai Emery has spoken about the ongoing situation with Granit Xhaka following the Arsenal captain’s controversy on Sunday evening (via Arsenal.com).

It was clear that something significant was happening when Granit Xhaka left the field in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on the weekend.

The Gunners captain left the pitch engaging in some ongoing abuse with the home supporters and went straight down the tunnel.

There were suggestions that the Swiss midfielder would be stripped of the captaincy and now, head coach Unai Emery has spoken about the incident.

“It’s not easy for him and for the team. He is now devastated, devastated and sad,” Emery said ahead of tomorrow’s Carabao Cup match with Liverpool.

“He was wrong and he feels it inside very deeply.”

But Emery wasn’t drawn into conversations about stripping Xhaka of the captain’s armband, just a few months after he was handed it on a permanent basis.

“He has the conditions to be the captain. I decided that and the players respect that. He was wrong on Sunday and he also got wrong the response on Sunday, as a captain.

“First is to recover him, as a human, as a player. And then we are going to continue speaking about how we can improve, how we can continue in that way with him, with the team and with everybody.”

So, it looks as if Unai Emery won’t be stripping Granit Xhaka of the captain’s armband any time soon. The Swiss midfielder’s conduct was unacceptable and it’s difficult to justify that he should remain with this responsibility.
