Arsenal have had more than their fair share of woeful performances at Anfield in recent years and this one didn’t start much better. Former Gunner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain broke clear down the right and crossed into the box. Shkodran Mustafi was the man to meet it but the former Germany international couldn’t sort his feet out and slid the ball into the back of the net for an own goal.

The game petered out in the moments that followed but Arsenal soon found their footing. Mesut Ozil started to see more of the ball and the Gunners settled.

It was the German who found space in the ball to cross the ball for Bukayo Saka whose low shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Fortunately, the rebound fell straight for an unmarked Lucas Torreira to tap in and equalise.

Arsenal were on top and soon had some more luck down the right flank. Ainsley Maitland-Niles burst past Divock Origi to cross low. Again, a shot was saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper and again, a Gunners man found the rebound. Only this time it was Gabriel Martinelli who finished high and hard to put Arsenal in front.

Arsenal were dominating the match and soon found a third. Ozil won the ball high up the pitch and played a smart ball for Saka to move onto down the left. The Englishman looked up and saw an unmarked Martinelli in the centre of the pitch who made it 3-1 after an accurate cross.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Gunners. With five minutes to go in the first half, Martinelli put in a late challenge in his own box and the referee pointed straight to the spot. James Milner stepped up to make it 3-2.

There was very nearly a sixth goal in this wonderful first half of football with chances at both ends. First, Gabriel Martinelli failed to get the power on a header after being left unmarked before Divock Origi powered his header over the bar from a similar opportunity.

The second half went on in very much the same way as the first had ended. Both sides pressed forward for goals but Arsenal looked a little more potent in their offensive moves.

It was a game characterised by mistakes and Liverpool were the next to make one. James Milner under-hit a backpass and Maitland-Niles seized on it. The Englishman’s first touch was too heavy but Mesut Ozil raced onto the ball and played it back to Maitland-Niles with an audacious flick to make it 4-2.

But the game was far from over. The former Arsenal man Oxlade-Chamberlain soon get in on the action. He controlled the ball 30 yards from goal before unleashing a wonderful volley past Emiliano Martinez in goals.

There was a little under 30 minutes left in this match when it got its eighth goal. Divock Origi found some space and squeezed a shot under Emiliano Martinez to make it 4-4. The Arsenal stopper will be disappointed with his attempt.

People would be forgiven for thinking that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s half-volley would be the best goal of the match but Joe Willock soon upstaged up. The Englishman drove forward with the ball from the halfway line before whipping a shot into the top corner to make it 5-4.

The game slowed down in the following minutes. Arsenal brought on some substitutions in an attempt to kill this most incredible of matches. But unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. A simple cross came in from the left flank and Divock Origi found time and space to make it 5-5 in added time.

The match went to penalties and after a nearly-perfect run for both sides, Dani Ceballos’ effort was saved to send Arsenal home.
