Unai Emery has revealed why he decided to substitute Mesut Ozil after just 60 minutes in the defeat to Liverpool last night (via Arsenal.com).
Arsenal fans have been calling out for Mesut Ozil to return to the Arsenal first team and they got their wishes last night.
The German started the match and put in a fine performance, grabbing an assist and having a hand in a few other goals.
To the bemusement of many, Ozil was substituted with just 60 minutes on the match and now, Unai Emery has explained his decision.
“We decided before the game to only play him for that amount of time,” Emery said.
“I think in that moment it is good to make that decision as we were calm and he did the work very well and we decided it was better to rest him.
“We spoke before the match, and we made the decision in the second half to take him off because he hasn’t played for a little while and we want to keep his fitness as he was very tired but for him it was great to play 60/65 minutes.
“We have a match on Saturday and we will look at the possibility to use him again alongside other players and this is the way sometimes.”
It was great to see Mesut Ozil back on the pitch last night. The former Germany international put in an excellent performance on the night and it was a shame to see him come off, it’s understandable given his lack of playing time. Let’s hope Ozil is back on Saturday.
