Unai Emery has spoken about the ongoing situation with Granit Xhaka following the Arsenal captain’s controversy on Sunday evening (via Arsenal.com).
It was clear that something significant was happening when Granit Xhaka left the field in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on the weekend.
The Gunners captain left the pitch engaging in some ongoing abuse with the home supporters and went straight down the tunnel.
There were suggestions that the Swiss midfielder would be stripped of the captaincy and now, head coach Unai Emery has spoken about the incident.
“It’s not easy for him and for the team. He is now devastated, devastated and sad,” Emery said ahead of tomorrow’s Carabao Cup match with Liverpool.
“He was wrong and he feels it inside very deeply.”
But Emery wasn’t drawn into conversations about stripping Xhaka of the captain’s armband, just a few months after he was handed it on a permanent basis.
“He has the conditions to be the captain. I decided that and the players respect that. He was wrong on Sunday and he also got wrong the response on Sunday, as a captain.
“First is to recover him, as a human, as a player. And then we are going to continue speaking about how we can improve, how we can continue in that way with him, with the team and with everybody.”
So, it looks as if Unai Emery won’t be stripping Granit Xhaka of the captain’s armband any time soon. The Swiss midfielder’s conduct was unacceptable and it’s difficult to justify that he should remain with this responsibility.
