4-2-3-1: Man Utd can smash Villa with this exciting young starting XI

Manchester United are set to take on Aston Villa later today with there being a real need to ensure all three points are taken back to Old Trafford.

It feels as though that’s being said on a regular basis but sooner or later the top four clubs will truly pull away from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and then he may actually face the risk of losing his job.

Mauricio Pochettino being a ‘free agent’ certainly doesn’t help the legendary Norwegian as he’s being scrutinised on every little thing.

However, United facing the prospect of no Champions League football again is a little too much to bear for fans.

Solskjaer can return to winning ways by returning to a formation that’s proven successful in the past and by taking some risks.

Brandon Williams deserves to continue keeping his place particularly with fans losing their minds over Luke Shaw‘s shocking display vs Astana mid-week.

Victor Lindelof hasn’t been in the best of form this season so while it may risk Axel Tuanzebe‘s fitness, there’s a real need to see him play.

Fred must return for a little experience in midfield and hopefully he can put his own show against Astana behind him while Dylan Levitt’s impressive debut should see him start given the excessive injuries.

The front three pretty much select themselves given their performances and also Solskjaer’s lack of real substitutes.

Jesse Lingard got back to goalscoring ways against Astana so the hope is he can keep it up but again United don’t have any real alternatives given how poor Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira have been all season.

Woodward lining up controversial January move for this experienced midfielder: report

Manchester United could reportedly make a move for Barcelona star Arturo Vidal despite how it would potentially be considered as a controversial move.

Fans would likely be upset at purchasing a player who’s facing the end of his career when better options are available on the market.

Vidal has also faced some injury issues in the past so there are signs this wouldn’t be a positive move for United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s need for reinforcements in January is well known but links to the tenacious Chilean don’t seem to make much sense.

If anything, it feels as though this report has come to the limelight due to the 32 year old’s desire to leave Spain due to a lack of match-time.

According to Sport Witness, FcInterNews reports that the Red Devils need to replace Nemanja Matic’s potential departure with another experienced midfielder with Vidal a possible target given Ed Woodward’s positive relationship with his agent and the claim they’ve made contact.

The former Chelsea man is said to be on his way out this January with Inter Milan believed to be keen on him so it wouldn’t be wise to trust the original news source.

After all, the Italian giants would benefit from seeing Matic leave United with Vidal replacing him so a deal would become more realistic.

Scholes launches scathing attack on this Man United pair

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has reiterated fans’ concerns with the Fred and Andreas Pereira midfield pairing, suggesting their naivety away from home is what costed the team.

With Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay all injured, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a decision to make in midfield and played the Brazilian duo alongside each other for the first time this season.

The former Molde man also attempted to compensate for a midfield lacking in quality by playing a three-man backline but the decision ended up backfiring tactically.

On paper and before the match the decisions seemed to make some sense but Sheffield United quickly took advantage before Solskjaer could turn it around.

Neither Fred nor Pereira could keep a hold of the ball against the tenacious home side and it ended up costing the Red Devils two points.

According to Goal, Scholes said: “He [Solskjaer] got seven minutes of a reaction, that was it. The first hour was probably as bad as you’ve seen.

“When you go to places like Sheffield United, anywhere away in the Premier League, you have to realise for 20-25 minutes it’s going to be a fight.

“You’re not just going to be left in possession with the ball. You’re going to be tackled, you’re going to expect challenges.

“I think as soon as Fred and Pereira realise that it’s not always going to be easy-oozy in a Premier League game away from home the better.

“If they ever get the chance to play again together they are going to have to improve massively.”

It’s difficult to criticise Fred given his recent upturn in form but it’s also safe to say many expected him to step up in the absence of some of the regulars.

It could be argued he was the victim of his manager’s poor tactical decision and now both he and Solskjaer have the chance to make amends vs Aston Villa later today.

Solskjaer has doubts over this 24yo Man United star's future: report

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly has concerns over Luke Shaw following certain circumstances as well as the emergence of Brandon Williams this season.

The academy product’s performances have been so impressive some fans have called for him to replace the former Southampton man permanently.

Shaw has certainly not hit the potential United hoped he’d have when they initially purchased him but it’d be harsh to claim he was an awful player.

In truth the English defender is an average player with decent defending qualities but his attacking threat has near disappeared.

Williams, at least at the moment, has so much more to offer and has endeared fans with his tenacious and brave displays so far.

According to the Express, Solskjaer has doubts over Shaw’s injury record and his ability to carry out instructions physically with a move out of the club possible in the summer.

The 24 year old has suffered numerous injuries during his time at Old Trafford and that has slowly turned him into an unreliable player.

If he can’t make consistent appearances in the first-team then it doesn’t make sense to consider him as anything more than a squad player.

At the moment it also doesn’t make sense to move him on either as Williams can be the first-choice with Shaw providing cover unless Solskjaer wants to invest in a proven left-back and allow Williams to be the cover.

Berbatov tips this unexpected Man United star to get the captaincy

Manchester United fan-favourite Dimitar Berbatov has tipped Marcus Rashford to potentially become captain, citing how he sets the example for academy products brilliantly.

The Bulgarian great knows a thing or two about great leaders having played with a few during his time at Old Trafford so his words shouldn’t be taken lightly.

However it is a surprise that Berbatov has suggested Rashford as no large enough group of fans have backed such a decision before.

Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof, Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Harry Maguire have all been thrown out there as suggestions in the past but never the 22 year old Englishman.

Perhaps the former Tottenham man sees something in Rashford that fans don’t but it’s unlikely such a decision would be an unpopular one if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes it.

According to Manchester Evening News, Berbatov said: “He is still so young and no doubt he will be on the radar of a few other clubs, but I see him as a typical born and bred Manchester United player.

“Someone who can carry the torch for academy players coming through at Untied, to show that it can be done, he is the prime example and he can still go further, maybe one day he can be the captain.

“I can see him staying at United for a very long time and it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he is a one-club man. I always wanted to be like that but it was never possible for me.”

Certainly if Rashford grows and becomes even more talismanic for Manchester United then there’s no real reason why he can’t become captain.

If he continues to show loyalty and dedicates his peak years to the club, that’s even more reason to reward him with the armband.

It’ll definitely be inspirational to the academy players like Berbatov said but Rashford can’t be handed the captaincy solely on that factor as there are more important things to consider.

Ferdinand lifts the lid on the exact moment Mourinho lost the United job

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has pinpointed the moment he feels Jose Mourinho’s job began to be put on the line.

The Portuguese tactician recently became employed by Tottenham around a year after losing his seat at Old Trafford with some fans still in the belief that it was the wrong decision.

Mourinho certainly splits supporters’ opinions but there’s no doubt over how negative or toxic the atmosphere became towards the end of his tenure.

It felt almost as though United would have no choice but to fire the former Chelsea boss since both parties were at the point of no return.

Some fans even accused Mourinho of having given up and his disheveled appearance certainly didn’t helps matters.

According to Manchester Evening News, Ferdinand said: “He was miserable and down beat and negative about a lot of situations mainly players.

“Talking about players in public, which I didn’t agree with and wouldn’t have liked as a player. I was always up for my manager being honest with me.

“Negative is fine face to face but in the public domain it’s hard to maintain a positive relationship with a player when that has happened.

“It was the beginning of the end when he started doing that. He was miserable and down beat and negative about a lot of situations mainly players.

“Talking about players in public, which I didn’t agree with and wouldn’t have liked as a player. I was always up for my manager being honest with me.

“Negative is fine face to face but in the public domain it’s hard to maintain a positive relationship with a player when that has happened. It was the beginning of the end when he started doing that.”

Ferdinand isn’t wrong with his comments but in playing the devil’s advocate it could be said that Mourinho didn’t begin that way.

It could be argued the former Real Madrid man was optimistic and positive at the start of his reign and only threw his toys out of the pram when United showed they wouldn’t back him fully.

It could also be argued that he may have decided to criticise publicly only after failing to get a response from his players when criticising privately.

"Interesting", "Why?" - These Chelsea fans question why star has been dropped to the bench

Chelsea host West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League today as they look to move up to second in the table – with Leicester playing on Sunday.

Frank Lampard has named his team for the match, with N’Golo Kante dropping to the bench despite scoring against Manchester City last weekend.

Well done…

It makes sense for Lampard to give Kante a rest, given his injury problems this season. The last thing Lampard wants to do is start Kante and cause him to miss another few matches with a knock, which means that resting him for a home game against a struggling team is a good decision from the boss.

It also gives Mason Mount the chance to come back into the side and impress. The midfielder has struggled to produce goals and assists in recent games, so he will be desperate for a telling contribution against the Hammers.

Major boost: Director confirms United’s main January transfer target may be sold

Red Bull Salzburg’s Sporting Director Christoph Freund has conceded that the club may sell 19-year-old star striker Erling Braut Haaland in January, according to reports in the Norwegian press.

In an interview on Tuesday, Freund told Norwegian outlet VG that he hoped Salzburg would be able to keep the player until the end of the season, but that he could not rule out a January exit.

Manchester United are believed to be leading the pack to sign the youngster. The club has sent scouts to a number of Haaland’s games this season and are in the process of preparing a bid, according to The Times.

United are said to have brought forward plans to sign Haaland due to the fact that his explosive performances this season having started to attract the attention of the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool, making competition for a Summer transfer much more likely. United received a further boost yesterday when, according to the Sun,  it emerged that the reports earlier this week that Red Bull Leipzig had first refusal on signing the player had been dismissed as nonsense.

Haaland has scored an incredible 40 goals in 25 appearances this season, including eight in the Champions League and 15 in the Austrian Bundesliga. He scored in his first 5 UCL matches – twice when coming off the bench – and became the first teenager to score in 5 straight Champions League games. All eyes will be on the Norwegian when Liverpool visit Salzburg for a Champions League fixture on December 10th.

“At the moment there is no bid on our table.” Freund told VG. “We are relaxed and Erling is relaxed. We are enjoying the time with him. It’s nice that we have a 19-year-old that many big clubs in Europe are really interested in.”

Top journalist claims this world-class manager wants to replace Solskjaer

David Amoyal, who works with Gianluca Di Marzio, has claimed that Massimiliano Allegri would prematurely end a sabbatical from management should the Manchester United job become available.

Questions continue to linger over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Man United sit ninth in the Premier League table after 13 games.

Allegri, on the other hand, has resolved to stay away from management until next summer following five years in charge of Juventus.

However, should the United job become available, Allegri would be interested in taking the United job, according to Amoyal.

Allegri would certainly not be the first-choice options for United fans, many of whom decided that Mauricio Pochettino was their man quite some time ago.

There is a tendency amongst us English to place Italian managers into the same bracket: irascible, conservative, deeply concerned with tactics, expressive on the touchline as his team maintains impeccable discipline on the pitch.

Allegri deserves to be seen as more than that. He is, for one thing, a remarkable speaker (albeit in Italian), as well as highly modern in his methods, invoking three at the back at Juventus as well as placing a strong emphasis on penetrating key areas of the pitch through breaking midfield lines.

Nonetheless, the 52-year-old seems like an outside chance to become the next United manager.

Man Utd 'hot candidates' to sign Sancho, facing competition from two mega clubs: report

Manchester United face competition from Liverpool and Real Madrid for the signature of Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho next summer.

The Englishman has netted 16 goals and claimed 20 assists since the start of last season and is tipped to become one of the country’s biggest superstars.

Reports have strongly suggested that United are determined to sign Sancho, who is valued at over £100m by Dortmund.

According to German media outlet Bild, United, Liverpool and Real are the ‘hottest candidates’ to secure Sancho’s signature next summer.

I’m not sure why, but I can picture Sancho joining Chelsea next summer. There is little evidence to support this but Chelsea are good at jumping in at the right moment to sign top players. Following a one-year transfer ban, spending over £100m on the 20-year-old would make sense.

That said, there is a good body of evidence suggesting that United want the player. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on signing an attacking right-sided player capable of complementing the attributes of the more defensively-minded Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Either way, this is a saga that will, no doubt, continue to blossom as the summer gets closer.

4-2-3-1: Solskjaer to name a totally different starting XI vs. Aston Villa

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will most likely name a completely different starting XI against Aston Villa compared with the one that fell to a 2-1 defeat to Astana in the Europa League.

Manchester United’s kids started the game well in Kazakhstan, only to do rather predictably fall apart as the game went on.

Against a dogged but limited Villa side, Solskjaer must pick a team capable of keeping the visitors under the pump for 90 minutes.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the game on Sunday.

United’s problem is not that they are unable to play good football. They can. Their problem is that this good football lasts, on average, about 15 to 30 minutes per game.

This issue comes down to maturity and a serious lack of it within the ranks. There is plenty of talent but not much idea on how to steer it effectively.

This is why, as I have often said, Juan Mata can still be so important. When the pressure is on and the internal compass seems to have failed, the Spaniard’s intuitive deftness in possession often shines through and makes a difference.

As United return to Premier League action this week, you cannot help but feel like they could benefit from a sense of calm in the attacking third.

South London takes on East London as Chelsea host West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

West Ham could not have picked a worse time to play their London rivals. The Irons are currently bang out of form, having not won any of their previous eight matches, leaving them three points off the relegation zone.

This current form has put severe pressure on boss Manuel Pellegrini and as the current trend of managers getting sacked remains constant, a loss here might see the end of Pellegrini’s stay at the London Stadium.

Chelsea are in the polar opposite situation to the Hammers. Blues fans are loving life under Frank Lampard and his side are an entertaining and wonderful side to watch this season.

The Blues will be looking to bounce back after their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City last week and look to keep up the pressure on the top of the table.

Despite their current form, this West Ham side is still one that is full of quality players, so Chelsea can still expect a fight from the Irons and will need to deliver a professional performance if they want the three points.

Here are the key battles that we think will decide the game:

The post Key Battles: Chelsea vs West Ham appeared first on Read Chelsea.

Picture: Key Man Utd star back at Carrington, could return for Man City

Paul Pogba has been pictured driving into Manchester United’s training base in Carrington ahead of potentially returning to action next week.

The Frenchman has been plagued by a foot injury initially sustained in August and then exacerbated in late September.

Pogba has spent the last week working on several strengthening exercises after seeing his cast removed from his foot ahead of United’s 3-3 draw with Sheffield United.

Now, thankfully, he is back at Carrington for – hopefully – the final leg of his recovery process.

It would be wonderfully Pogba-esque for the midfielder, having barely played all season, to come back for the meeting with Manchester City on December 7 and absolutely running havoc all over the pitch, much like when he turned the 3-2 win at the Etihad in April 2018 in United’s favour almost single-handedly.

At the same time, though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot rush him back after such a prolonged period on the sidelines. The midfielder is too crucial – especially at a time when the midfield is criminally understaffed.

Sporting director confirms Man Utd will not sign this major target in January

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that the club does not expect Jadon Sancho to join Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Sancho is said to have been left feeling unsettled by what he considers to be a scapegoating from his manager Lucien Favre – especially for the 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, during which he was subbed off before half time.

The 20-year-old is viewed by Man United as a key target ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to sign an attacking player on the right-hand side.

Speaking on the subject of Sancho, Zorc said: “We’ve cleared everything internally in the team and with the player.

“It’s done, we’re looking forward. Jadon is another regular player and he is part of our team. I believe that when he came on against Barcelona, we witnessed a good response and he did a very good job.

“I do not have the impression that he wants to prepare for a January move. We talked to him and his agency. We hope he shows his best possible performance tomorrow.”

Sancho, you suspect, is too big of a player to be sold in January – a time when only minor deals normally happen – and reports suggesting that United could fast-track his purchase this winter only stems from the fact that his manager does not consider him to be fully focused.

A move looks very likely next summer, and it would be fair to assume that this little episode is just the start of a long-winded saga involving Sancho, Dortmund and United, along with the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid, perhaps.

Gallery: Will Lampard come back to haunt West Ham? How we predict his time to line up tomorrow

Frank Lampard will ignite his longstanding feud with the vocal minority of West Ham’s fan base on Saturday as his Chelsea team look to inflict more pain upon their stuttering London rivals.

Harassed and hounded out of his boyhood club by unfounded claims of nepotism at the turn of the Millenium, Lampard’s longstanding war of words with West Ham is well documented. Spitefulness is not a trait commonly associated with Lampard but in the case of his treatment by the club’s fans it is both apparent and understandable. Whilst his position as manager will likely prevent him from reopening old wounds publically there is certainly a vengeful motivation, that procedes longstanding tribal rivalry, behind Lampard’s desire to win on Saturday.

In terms of matters away from the triviality of Lampard’s personal relations with West Ham, both sides are looking for a win to kickstart a run of form to sustain them through a hectic winter period. It must be said that Chelsea are in a far more envious position coming into the game, and whilst their winless run only stretches to two closely fought matches against Manchester City and Valencia West Ham, on the other hand, can be found labouring in the bottom half of the table after an eight-game winless run.

Much of West Ham’s poor form can be attributed to the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and the dismal performances of his understudy Roberto. But of course, not all of the Hammers’ shortcomings can be squared solely at their goalkeeping situation. West Ham are currently a top-heavy side who possess an abundance of flair players incapable of contributing to the defensive phases of the game. This has inevitably caused the ageing legs of Mark Noble to be overrun in the midfield, whilst former Chelsea youth prospect Declan Rice lacks the mobility to counter-press and produce high-quality turnovers.

Fabianski is still absent whilst Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini and Winston Reid all remain sidelined. Chelsea are sweating over the fitness of centre-forward Tammy Abraham and with neither Olivier Giroud nor Michy Batshuayi impressing in large portions Lampard faces a very inconvenient selection dilemma.

Nothing has changed: United know they can secure classy midfielder for €100m

Widespread reports in the English press this week claiming that Manchester United target Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract with Sporting Lisbon that raises his release clause from €80 million (around £68 million) to €100 million (around £85 million) are wide of the mark.

Whilst it is true that the player has signed a new deal, announced on the club’s official website, the release clause has not changed – as it was already €100 million, and neither has the length of contract, which remains until June 2023, reports O Jogo.

The Portuguese media widely claim that due to the club’s mounting debt problems, Sporting will have to sell players to balance the books in the coming months and are likely to accept offers in the region of €70 million for the player – €30 million below the buyout price. A Bola reports that the new contract is unlikely to affect whether Fernandes leaves in January and that his departure is “practically guaranteed” at the end of the season.

Fernandes himself revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that personal terms had, to all intents and purposes, been agreed with the London side. That gentleman’s agreement and Mourinho’s arrival places Spurs as strong favourites to sign the Porto-born star.

According to O Jogo, the new contract increases Fernandes’s salary to €2 million a season – the equivalent of around £32,000 per week.

Speaking to the club’s official magazine Jornal Sporting, Fernandes said “For me it is an honour and a recognition of my work … it is and always will be a privilege to be here and to be able to wear the Sporting shirt … [Sporting fans] can expect more and better. I promise the same performance and dedication so we can have more moments of glory like we had last season.”

Playing interchangeably as a No.8 and a No.10, the prolific Fernandes scored 32 goals and recorded 18 assists in 53 games for Sporting last season, earning him a place in UEFA’s top 50 players of the season and a nomination for the UEFA All-Star XI. He is set to record similar figures this season, having already scored nine goals and notched six assists in Sporting’s first 17 games.

If Manchester United do return to the transfer market for Fernandes in January, they are likely to meet stiff competition from new Tottenham manager and fellow Portuguese José Mourinho, who is known to be a keen admirer of the player. Spurs came the closest to signing the player in August, having offered an amount reportedly between €60 and €65 million, but the deal reached an impasse with Sporting holding out for somewhere between €75 and €80 million.

Reports suggest that Arsenal have approached the Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo over the vacant head coach’s role (via Di Marzio).

Arsenal are currently without a permanent head coach following the departure of Unai Emery this morning.

Freddie Ljungberg has taken over on an interim basis for the time being but behind the scenes, the search for Emery’s successor is well underway.

Many names have been touted for the role but it seems as if one boss is leading the race.

Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that Arsenal have contacted Nuno Espirito Santo over the head coach role at the club.

The current Wolves boss has enjoyed considerable success with the club in recent seasons and has his side playing good football.

Santo took over at Molineux back in 2017 following success with Porto in his native Portugal.

He guided this Wolves team to the Europa League in his first season in the Premier League and they’re looking good again this term.

It’s unclear how much truth is in these reports. Nuno Espirito Santo is undoubtedly a good manager but some Arsenal fans would have their doubts. Fans would find it easier to get beyond some of the other candidates like Mauricio Pochettino, Max Allegri, or even Mikel Arteta. Let’s wait and see what happens.

Freddie Ljungberg has been appointed the interim head coach of Arsenal following the departure of Unai Emery (via Arsenal.com).

It’s a momentous day for Arsenal FC after the departure of head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team.

Things went off the rails for the Spaniard some time ago but it seems as if the 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt last night was the final straw.

Now, a replacement has been named in the form of the current first-team coach, Freddie Ljungberg.

The club has confirmed that the Swede will take over as the interim head coach of Arsenal FC with no timescale given.

Arsenal have said that the search is underway for a new head coach but for the time being, Ljungberg is the man in charge.

A former Invincible, Ljungberg rejoined the Gunners back in June 2018 to coach the under-23s following some time Wolfsburg.

This summer, he was promoted to the first-team coaching staff and became an assistant to Unai Emery.

Freddie Ljungberg is highly thought of at the club and many expect him to make an impression. It’s an interesting appointment, although we don’t know how long it will last. Let’s hope that Emery’s departure sparks an immediate turnaround in form because right now, the season is slipping out of Arsenal’s reach.

The club has confirmed that Unai Emery has been sacked from his role as head coach of Arsenal FC (via Arsenal.com).

It’s news which has been coming for some time but today, we finally have confirmation over the future of Unai Emery.

The Spaniard has been sacked by the club after just over 18 months as the Gunners’ head coach.

Arriving in the summer of 2018, the former PSG boss made a quick start to his time in North London, guiding his side to an impressive first six months.

Things soon unravelled for Emery with problems evident as early as the end of last season.

That has culminated in recent weeks and finally came to a head with the 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt last night.

“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand,” Said Josh Kroenke in the official statement.

“We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

It’s been coming for a while but finally, we have the news many fans were waiting for. Unai Emery wasn’t the right fit for Arsenal FC at this time and the last 6 months have proved as much. Let’s hope the club can kick on and sort things out on the pitch.

Arsenal secured their first home defeat of the season to put Emery on the brink.

—–
Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Arsenal v Eintracht Frankfurt
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 28/11/2019
—–

Here’s how we rate Unai Emery and the Arsenal players:

Unai Emery: 3

The starting XI raised a few eyebrows with Nicolas Pepe still on the bench and a midfield two of David Luiz and Granit Xhaka. Unai Emery’s substitutions barely improved matters with no recognisable game plan.

Emiliano Martinez – 5

He didn’t do too badly. Emiliano Martinez can’t complain about the Frankfurt goals and he made a couple of really important saves.

Calum Chambers – 5

He lost the ball a few more times than he should’ve but Calum Chambers defended reasonably well.

Shkodran Mustafi – 5

He was okay. Shkodran Mustafi continued his decent form in cup competitions.

Sub: Lucas Torreira (76′) – 4

He hardly convinced in midfield.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 3

A really poor night for Sokratis. The former Dortmund man was error-prone throughout, no more so than when he gifted the ball away to start the move which led to Frankfurt’s second goal.

Kieran Tierney – 5

Kieran Tierney was okay. He worked hard in defence but didn’t have much of an opportunity further up the field.

David Luiz – 5

It was interesting watching David Luiz in midfield. He started the match reasonably well but understandably, his performance level dropped after picking up that knock.

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (32′) – 3

Matteo Guendouzi couldn’t get it right tonight. The Frenchman looked tired and leggy without being effective in either half. He was sloppy on the ball and lethargic without it. He didn’t look fit.

Granit Xhaka – 4

There was some definite rust in his game but Granit Xhaka did okay. The spotlight was on him and his return to the team but he took it in his stride.

Joe Willock – 5

He did fairly well. Joe Willock had some nice touches in both areas of the pitch but he was let down by his end product. The Englishman should’ve added at least one goal to his tally this evening.

Bukayo Saka – 4

He was poor. Things just didn’t work out for Bukayo Saka this evening whatever he tried to do.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 4

He grabbed the opening goal but his performance hardly deserved it. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drifted in and out of this one but, in all honesty, he spent more time out of it.

Gabriel Martinelli – 4

Things didn’t click for the impressive Brazilian this evening. Gabriel Martinelli barely had a sniff in front of goal.

Sub: Mesut Ozil (60′) – 3

Barely involved. Mesut Ozil had 30 minutes to make an impression but he didn’t influence the match at all.

Arsenal squandered a one-goal lead to ultimately lose 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Emirates.

—–
Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Arsenal v Eintracht Frankfurt
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 28/11/2019
—–

It was a rather unusual atmosphere at the Emirates when things kicked off. The off-field problems would have always led to such a situation but it didn’t help that the stadium was more than half-empty with no away fans.

Still, there was a game to be played and Arsenal got off to a decent start. A couple of promising attacks petered out before Joe Willock and Gabriel Martinelli squandered good opportunities in front of goal.

Arsenal players were dropping like flies in the first half. First David Luiz was substituted then Granit Xhaka temporarily left the pitch shortly before the break as the Gunners stalled in attack.

That changed shortly after the clock struck 45 minutes. A cross came in for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the back post and the Gabonese forward hit his shot low and under the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Things didn’t really improve after the break. Arsenal had a decent opening through Calum Chambers but did do better at keeping their opponent’s shots to a minimum.

But that soon changed. The young Japanese midfielder Daichi Kamada found the ball on the edge of the area for Frankfurt. He cut infield before firing the ball into the far corner of Emi Martinez’s net.

Frankfurt looked a different side and really took the match to Arsenal. The Gunners conceded a sloppy corner and when the ball fell out to Kamada again, he found the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The game deflated with that third goal. Eintracht Frankfurt just sat in the middle of the pitch and invited Arsenal pressure. The home side’s attacks led to nothing and the visitors could counter.

The atmosphere bordered on mutinous by the end of the match as the Arsenal players aimlessly moved the ball around the pitch and approached every challenge with hesitancy.

Some players did attempt to force change. Kieran Tierney and Bukayo Saka were amongst a visible minority as Arsenal drifted towards their first home defeat of the season. Two goals almost became three for the visitors late on when Mendes Paciencia squandered a good chance.

But it didn’t matter as the final stages ticked away and Arsenal headed for just their second home defeat in this competition.

Unai Emery has named his starting lineup for Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings

Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 28/11/2019

It could be a significant match for Unai Emery and Arsenal this evening as the players attempt to put all of the issues to one side and focus on the game.

Eintracht Frankfurt are the opponents for tonight’s match, a game which some believe could be Unai Emery’s final in charge of the Gunners.

It remains to be seen how much truth is in that but for now, it’s clear that the Spaniard wants to win this one.

Arsenal have put out a strong side for this one with Europa League knockout stage qualification on the line for the home side.

We aren’t expecting a busy night at the Emirates in terms of spectators but the show must go on.

Here’s how the two sides line up:

Arsenal

Emi Martinez

Shkodran Mustafi

Calum Chambers

David Luiz

Sokratis Papastathopoulos

Kieran Tierney

Granit Xhaka

Joe Willock

Bukayo Saka

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Gabriel Martinelli

Subs: Leno, Torreira, Guendouzi, Nelson, Pepe, Lacazette, Ozil

Eintracht Frankfurt

Makoto Hasebe

Martin Hinteregger

Danny da Costa

Djibril Sow

Gelson Fernandes

Daichi Kamada

Filip Kostic

Subs: Ndicka, Joveljic, Gacinovic, Toure, Chandler, Kohr, Zimmermann

100 passes, 100% tackles: Solskjaer has found himself a new midfield dynamo

Manchester United starlet Dylan Levitt has arguably put in the strongest showing of the academy stars in the unfortunate loss to Astana.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for a youthful side for the Europa League fixture given how his first-team have already qualified for the next round.

Many youngsters made their debuts while others who made rare appearances were handed starts.

Levitt made his debut and if one was watching with no context, it’d be hard to believe that was his first start.

Playing alongside James Garner in midfield, the pair kept possession well for United though the former arguably played better than the latter.

His tackle rate and passes completed are impressive enough but it’s his quality of passes that’s so incredible.

Not only did he pass forward frequently but it was accurately and into dangerous areas of the field despite playing as part of a holding midfield pair.

His performance merits being given more minutes in the league now but perhaps more so coming off the bench until he further develops.

If Levitt can keep it up and Garner also slowly grows into his role then United may suddenly find themselves overflowing with midfield options which will be helpful if Paul Pogba does end up leaving.

"Doesn't have a future"- Man United fans write off youngster after Astana loss

Manchester United fans were thoroughly unimpressed by Tahith Chong who was given a rare start in the first-team in the clash vs Astana.

With nothing to lose, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to play a host of youngsters in the Europa League given the lack of pressure on their shoulders.

It was a chance to impress for many in a lowkey affair and some academy products did boost their reputations but Chong wasn’t one of them.

The Dutchman’s contract runs out next summer with there being plenty of talk that he’s seeking a move elsewhere and United not seemingly eager to tie him down.

After his horrendous display vs Astana, it’s tough to argue he should be given a contract and perhaps some of his suitors may be turned off from him too.

Chong was impressive during United’s pre-season so there’s a chance he’s struggling to make his mark due to question marks being over his future.

However, the versatile attacker’s agent is treating the club as though his client is a world-class talent and is publicly flirting with other European sides.

Perhaps Chong will have a better future elsewhere but at this moment in time he’s not doing as much as the likes of Mason Greenwood to convince Solskjaer to play him more often.

Player Ratings: United's young midfielders shine, Shaw struggles, Laird really impresses

Lee Grant 6 – Hardly had any saves to make and was reliable when needed but still had to pick the ball out of his net a few times.

Ethan Laird 6 – Made sense for him to play it safe on his debut but did make the occasional run forward to be fair.

Axel Tuanzebe 6 – Was one of the more experienced players in the starting XI and was solid defensively but occasionally sloppy in possession.

Di’Shon Bernard 5 – Played decently until the pressure was on in the second half. Conceded an own goal moments after almost swiping it into his own net too.

Luke Shaw 5 – Should’ve been a walk in the park for him but struggled to make an impact going forwards and was suspect going back. Lost his man for one of Astana’s goals.

James Garner 6 – Cool, calm and collected, he didn’t do much wrong and kept possession ticking over.

Dylan Levitt 6.5 – Was the more adventurous of the midfield pair, playing more dangerous passes as he thread them through to his teammates. Impressive debut.

Tahith Chong 5 – Hardly impressed and didn’t give United a reason to chase him for a contract renewal. A shadow of the player on pre-season.

Jesse Lingard 6.5 – Started brightly and netted United’s first of the night. Somewhat disappeared pretty much after that despite being the senior player in attack.

Angel Gomes 6 – Grew into the game in the second half but still, much more was expected from him like from Chong.

Mason Greenwood 6 – Ran tirelessly into good positions but wasn’t found by his teammates. Almost scored but was denied by a good save.
