Berbatov tips this unexpected Man United star to get the captaincy

Manchester United fan-favourite Dimitar Berbatov has tipped Marcus Rashford to potentially become captain, citing how he sets the example for academy products brilliantly.

The Bulgarian great knows a thing or two about great leaders having played with a few during his time at Old Trafford so his words shouldn’t be taken lightly.

However it is a surprise that Berbatov has suggested Rashford as no large enough group of fans have backed such a decision before.

Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof, Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Harry Maguire have all been thrown out there as suggestions in the past but never the 22 year old Englishman.

Perhaps the former Tottenham man sees something in Rashford that fans don’t but it’s unlikely such a decision would be an unpopular one if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes it.

According to Manchester Evening News, Berbatov said: “He is still so young and no doubt he will be on the radar of a few other clubs, but I see him as a typical born and bred Manchester United player.

“Someone who can carry the torch for academy players coming through at Untied, to show that it can be done, he is the prime example and he can still go further, maybe one day he can be the captain.

“I can see him staying at United for a very long time and it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he is a one-club man. I always wanted to be like that but it was never possible for me.”

Certainly if Rashford grows and becomes even more talismanic for Manchester United then there’s no real reason why he can’t become captain.

If he continues to show loyalty and dedicates his peak years to the club, that’s even more reason to reward him with the armband.

It’ll definitely be inspirational to the academy players like Berbatov said but Rashford can’t be handed the captaincy solely on that factor as there are more important things to consider.
