Red Bull Salzburg’s Sporting Director Christoph Freund has conceded that the club may sell 19-year-old star striker Erling Braut Haaland in January, according to reports in the Norwegian press.
In an interview on Tuesday, Freund told Norwegian outlet VG that he hoped Salzburg would be able to keep the player until the end of the season, but that he could not rule out a January exit.
Manchester United are believed to be leading the pack to sign the youngster. The club has sent scouts to a number of Haaland’s games this season and are in the process of preparing a bid, according to The Times.
United are said to have brought forward plans to sign Haaland due to the fact that his explosive performances this season having started to attract the attention of the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool, making competition for a Summer transfer much more likely. United received a further boost yesterday when, according to the Sun, it emerged that the reports earlier this week that Red Bull Leipzig had first refusal on signing the player had been dismissed as nonsense.
Haaland has scored an incredible 40 goals in 25 appearances this season, including eight in the Champions League and 15 in the Austrian Bundesliga. He scored in his first 5 UCL matches – twice when coming off the bench – and became the first teenager to score in 5 straight Champions League games. All eyes will be on the Norwegian when Liverpool visit Salzburg for a Champions League fixture on December 10th.
“At the moment there is no bid on our table.” Freund told VG. “We are relaxed and Erling is relaxed. We are enjoying the time with him. It’s nice that we have a 19-year-old that many big clubs in Europe are really interested in.”
