4-3-3: How Man United can line up vs Newcastle with Lukaku and Alexis

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken the handbrake off this Manchester United team and they are playing with a sense freedom and endeavour not seen since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Paul Pogba, described as a ‘virus’ by Jose Mourinho, has scored four goals and claiming three assists in three games, personifying the dramatic mood shift since Solksjaer’s arrival.

And the Norwegian, ahead of Man United’s trip to Newcastle on Wednesday, will be determined to reintegrate two highly talented yet much maligned members of the squad: Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the meeting with Rafa Benitez’s men.

Lukaku entered the frame against AFC Bournemouth, scoring his side’s fourth just 161 seconds after coming on, and may well have the perfect chance to reassert himself at the masthead of attack should Marcus Rashford miss the Newcastle game with the groin injury sustained during a sensational display on Sunday.

That the Belgian, with only two goals since September prior to his appearance against Bournemouth, immediately hit the ground running will have Sanchez licking his lips.

He may have looked lost on the pitch under Mourinho but, should he assume Lingard’s role in the team, the forward will be in dreamland: attacking aggressively down the middle in the final third, movement happening on either side, quick and precise passing, floating crosses to Lukaku and Paul Pogba, and of course scoring goals.

Another resurgence for a player who struggled under Mourinho may well be on the way.

Solskaer: Lukaku must change his game to succeed at Man United

Manchester United caretaker manager has stressed that Romelu Lukaku must reform his playing style if he is to regain his starting place at No.9.

The Belgian endured a tumultuous period under Jose Mourinho this season, managing just two goals between mid-September and Christmas.

He returned to the squad from compassionate leave against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday and scored almost immediately from the bench.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer made it clear that Lukaku needed to play less as a target man and more as a striker looking in behind the defence under his management.

“He’s a good target man but if you tell him to be a target man he’ll never face the goal,” he said.

“Today he was side-on, so then he could do both roles. He can go in behind and he can come towards the ball. He’s got the attributes of a top striker.”

The problem for Lukaku is not that he is, like many claim, a poor striker. He is a goalscoring menace, as his record shows, and with United looking to play quickly in behind, goals will no doubt come his way.

His main issue, rather, comes in the form of how he supersedes Rashford, who Solskjaer clearly admires deeply. Perhaps Lukaku’s potency in front of goal is better but, in terms of mobility, movement, intelligence and general ferocity, Rashford is in the driving seat as things stand.

Lukaku must demonstrate to Solskjaer that he can perform better outside and around – rather than merely inside – the box if he wants to return to the starting XI any time soon.

The best photos from Man United 4-1 AFC Bournemouth

Manchester United recorded their third successive victory under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 4-1 win over AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford‘s superb run through the heart of Bournemouth’s defence after just five minutes provided a tap-in for Paul Pogba, who headed in a second on 33 minutes.

Any remaining doubts over a United win were dashed by Rashford getting a deserved goal moments before half time, before substitute Romelu Lukaku added a fourth in the second half.

Do Man United fans need to give this person some major credit?

When Olé Gunnar Solskjaer was announced as the new interim manager of Manchester United following José Mourinho´s dismissal, there was a lot of criticism of Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward, with former players such as Robbie Savage dubbing the appointment a “shambles”. Woodward was criticised on two fronts, first, that he should have appointed a permanent manager rather than an interim one, and second, that Solskjaer lacked the credentials to take the role, even on an interim basis.

However, at the time of writing at least, it looks as if Solskjaer’s appointment has been a masterstroke. First, it has motivated the fans, bringing back a legend who epitomises the most glorious of glory days, the guy who put the ball in the German net in 1999; a positive, friendly, smiling yet determined man who has been quickly able to lift everyone’s spirits. Second, Solskjaer and the coaching team assembled around him, Mike Phelan especially, have had an instant transforming effect on team morale. And third, in appointing Solskjaer, Woodward has shown that he wants what the fans want; a return to swashbuckling, attacking football, to players expressing themselves, and to the principles that have underpinned Manchester United since the days of the Busby Babes. Woodward has also paved the way for Sir Alex Ferguson to act as consultant to Solskjaer and therefore take a more active role in the club’s management. And what is brilliant about all this is that it is an interim situation, so there is nothing to lose. If it’s not a roaring success, Woodward has bought himself months to line up a world class manager to take over on a permanent basis, and if it is a roaring success, then there is nothing to stop Solskjaer’s appointment being made permanent.

Often the subject of scathing criticism by the Manchester United fans, will Woodward be given the credit he deserves for this brave decision? Probably not, because Ed is the man the fans love to hate, and it’s easy to say, as many have, that it was all Sir Alex’s idea.

Woodward has also been lambasted for having extended Mourinho’s contract in January. This has meant that it cost £26 million to sack the Portuguese coach and the decision has been branded as ridiculous. But people have short memories. Back in January, United were flying high, and the biggest concern most fans had was that Mourinho would leave after two or three seasons, as he’d done elsewhere, and that we’d have to start the rebuilding process all over again. So Ed asked him to commit to a longer future in Manchester, and nobody complained at the time. Most of us were happy, even though, as usual, Woodward wasn’t given much credit for the decision.

Woodward also came under immense fire, and public shaming from Mourinho, for not securing a centre back signing in the 2018 Summer transfer period. It seemed strange at the time, but in retrospect, would having spent £80 million on Harry Maguire have been the right thing to do? Were the cracks already beginning to appear in Mourinho’s relationship with the players? And having already bought Bailly and Lindelof, wasn’t Woodward right to tell José, we aren’t going to pay that much money for a player who is not necessarily any better than the ones we have already got? But again, Woodward was slammed by the fans.

Woodward broke the world record transfer fee to sign Paul Pogba, which raised a lot of eyebrows at the time, but in retrospect appears to have been a bargain. Likewise he was ridiculed for spending £50 million on Anthony Martial, who could easily have shot into the Mbappé price range had Woodward not acted so swiftly. And when he swooped to capture Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this time last year, paying him a record salary, did it look like someone who didn’t support his coaches in the transfer market and who would not make big decisions to sign world class players?

Sure, Woodward’s first transfer window with the newly appointed David Moyes was a shambles, with only Marouane Fellaini being signed, at £4 million over the buyout clause price that had expired only days earlier. How much of that fiasco was Woodward’s inexperience, and how much was Moyes’ indecisiveness and/or inability to convince players to join his project? We will never know, but it has gone down in history as all down to Ed, which may be unfair. And even if it is fair, can’t he be forgiven for a beginner’s mistake?

Another criticism levelled at Woodward is that he is “not a football man”, but those who have bothered to watch or read interviews with him have seen a man with a deep knowledge of Manchester United, the club’s history and identity, a passionate interest in the game and a deep desire to do right by the club and the fans and make United the world’s most successful club. Has he had to also focus a lot on commercial partnerships and deals? Of course, and he has secured some amazing contracts that have helped the club maintain its status as the world’s richest club. Those six small letters “Kohler” that have appeared on the players’ sleeves this season, for example, cost the advertiser £20 million a season, the highest by far in the Premier League. But few fans give Woodward credit for this work, he is just accused of caring more about commercial deals than football. When he says “playing performance doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business”, it is misinterpreted, fans jump about, outraged, saying it proves he doesn’t care about football.  But it is just a fact, as the Kohler deal demonstrates –securing the right commercial contracts and investments has little to do with what is happening on the pitch. It doesn’t mean that Woodward doesn’t care what is happening on the pitch.

Perhaps the new togetherness that Solskjaer’s appointment has fostered should include a new found togetherness and trust between the fans and this much maligned figure. I, for one, will start the ball rolling by saying Happy New Year Mr Woodward, and thank you for everything you’ve done so far for my club.

Injuries to decide if Arsenal sign Chelsea man in January

Arsenal are considering a January move to sign Gary Cahill, but they’ll only step up their interest if they continue to suffer from injuries at the back.

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are keen to bring in the experienced defender, but will not rush into a January move.

Cahill is preparing to leave the Blues in January and wants to secure a loan move before leaving permanently at the end of the campaign.

Arsenal have been linked with the player in recent weeks, but the report claims that both Fulham and West Ham are ahead of the Gunners in the race to sign him.

Jan Kruger/Getty Images Sport

Injuries have been mounting at the back for Arsenal with Konstantinos Mavropanos and Rob Holding both long-term absentees.

Laurent Koscielny had also previously been struggling with injuries, but recently returned to first-team action.

Arsenal have had an unfortunate run with injuries this season and any more could leave them with little option but to sign added reinforcements in January.

Liverpool to rival Chelsea for Brazilian defender

Chelsea will face competition from Liverpool in their bid to sign Brazilian defender Eder Militao from Porto.

According to reports in Italy, both United and Liverpool are keen to sign the €50m-rated defender.

Chelsea have also been admirers for some time as he continues to impress in Portugal.

Manchester United have been watching the player for some time, with the club beginning to plan for life after Antonio Valencia.

Octavio Passos/Getty Images Sport

Porto already want to give Brazilian international new deal to remove the relatively low buy-out clause and to increase his salary so he is not tempted to move on after just a few months.

With Militao’s performances for Porto catching the eye of many, it seems that a big European move is looming for the young defender.

Any club looking to buy Militao may also be forced to spend big if Porto can reach an agreement over a new contract.

Bayern told how much they need to pay to sign Chelsea's Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea are demanding a fee in the region of £40 million from Bayern Munich to sign young winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

According to Sky Sports News, Chelsea have turned down a second offer in the region of £20 million for the young winger.

With Hudson-Odoi yet to fully break through at Stamford Bridge, he is already being linked with big-money moves to Germany, with Bayern said to be huge admirers.

The England youth international is highly rated at Stamford Bridge but is yet to sign a new long-term contract with the Blues.

Richard Heathcote/Getty Images Sport

Hudson-Odoi is the latest English player to be linked with a move to Germany following the success of Jadon Sancho with Borussia Dortmund.

The latter are also said to be fans of Hudson-Odoi but are unlikely to be able to compete with the financial muscle of their Bundesliga rivals.

Bayern are expected to spend big on wingers this summer with Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery set to leave the club in the near future.

Serie A club plotting shock move for Chelsea defender

Italian Serie A side Lazio are plotting a loan offer for Chelsea full-back Davide Zappacosta, according to a report on Calcio Mercato.

The right-back has struggled to break into the Chelsea starting line up ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta so far this season and could be offered a route out of the club by Lazio.

Laszlo Szirtesi/Getty Images Sport

The Italians are eager to strengthen their right side of defence and they have identified the Chelsea man as a target for the January transfer window.

They are looking to offer Chelsea a deal which will see Zappacosta join them until the end of the season and then giving them the option to buy him permanently for around €12m in the summer.

Zappacosta has been used in the cup competitions by manager Maurizio Sarri this season, especially in the Europa League. With the Blues still challenging for all the competitions, they may still need to call upon Zappacosta.

If the Blues do allow him to leave until the end of the season, then Sarri will want to bring in some cover at right back.

Chelsea could sign defender in January as club consider sale

Chelsea have been offered hope in their pursuit of Napoli defender Elseid Hysaj.

Reports in Italy have suggested that the Serie A side are mulling over a decision to sell the player in January.

It is being claimed that the Naples outfit are yet to make up their mind on the Albanian’s future.

Hysaj has not committed himself to a new contract at the club and continues to be linked with a move to Chelsea.

Francesco Pecoraro/Getty Images Sport

The right-back is under contract in Naples until 2021 and the club are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

Maurizio Sarri is a known admirer of the player and tried to bring him to London over the summer.

However, any deal was blocked after Chelsea were reportedly prevented from signing any further Napoli players following the arrival of Jorginho.

Hysaj’s agent has been very open about the possibility of a move to London in the build-up to the January window.

Paul Pogba produces dazzling two-goal display against AFC Bournemouth

Paul Pogba’s superb run of form following the sacking of Jose Mourinho continued with another brace during Manchester United’s 4-1 win over AFC Bournemouth.

The Frenchman, dropped for Mourinho’s last three Premier League games in charge, dazzled against Cardiff City – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game as caretaker manager – and scored an impressive pair against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

And he was in a similarly rampant mood on Sunday, putting the finishing touch to a spellbinding run from Marcus Rashford five minutes in, before killing the game with a sublime header on 33 minutes.

His numbers from the game tell the story of a truly peerless display.

Three games, three assists, four goals, three wins. Pogba’s resurgence under Solskjaer has been overwhelming and yet, at the same time, unsurprising.

These performances – not just from Pogba but indeed everyone in red – spring not from radical tactical change but more a general mood shift elicited by the caretaker boss. Mourinho brought storm clouds wherever he went; Solskjaer brings sunshine. It really is that simple.

That Mourinho failed to give Pogba this very straightforward and indeed logical type of platform from which to perform is not just managerial competence – it constitutes a crime against human nature itself.

All Pogba needed was to smile again. Mourinho wouldn’t let him. He’s certainly doing a lot of that now.

Chelsea to recall forgotten man in January

Chelsea will recall Baba Rahman from his loan spell at Schalke in January, according to reports.

Sky Deutschland, as cited on Calciomercato, claim that the player will be returning to London in the new year.

Rahman had remained at Schalke over the summer in a bid to beat off his latest string of injuries, but he has since found game time hard to come by this season.

Lintao Zhang/Getty Images Sport

The Ghanian defender has yet again been troubled by injuries which have derailed his development.

Rahman first moved to Germany on loan during Antonio Conte’s time in charge of the Blues and it remains to be seen if he has a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

While he is now expected to return to the club in January, it is unlikely he will break into Maurizio Sarri plans anytime soon, with another loan move away from the club the most likely outcome for the defender.

Chelsea youngster has yet more interest from Germany

RP Leipzig are the latest Bundesliga club to show an interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi, according to Kicker.

The Chelsea youngster is seen as one of English football’s most exciting rising stars, with Bayern Munich already rumoured to have tabled a £20million bid for him.

Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be monitoring the situation, making it tricky for Leipzig to emerge as front-runners.

They are likely to sit back and assess the situation for now, as they weigh up whether or not to make a bid for his services.

Respected German football journalist Raphael Honigstein told Sky Sports‘ Sunday Supplement about the “cult following” Hudson-Odoi has in Germany:

Michael Regan/Getty Images Sport

He’s had a cult following among Bundesliga supremos for quite a while. There’s been a lot of clubs interested in him, and he’s made so much progress.

His stock has risen to the point where he’s gone from Borussia Monchengladbach to Dortmund, to right at the top now where Bayern are interested in him.

It’s the [Jadon] Sancho effect – everyone thinks they can get the next Sancho, and I also think from his point of view, he thinks he can be the next Sancho, doing what Sancho’s done going to the Bundesliga.

The 18-year-old has only managed six appearances for Chelsea this season, with four of those coming in the Europa League.

The Blues will know that they have a special talent on their hands, but a big-money bid for him could turn their heads.

Milan manager not confident of signing Chelsea star

AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso admits he is not confident of signing Cesc Fabregas in the summer.

The Chelsea veteran has been continually linked with a move to Italy, as he enters the twilight of his glittering career.

His first team opportunities are becoming increasingly hard to come by at Stamford Bridge, with a move making sensing for the Spaniard.

The 31-year-old will be available to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, as his Chelsea contract expires.

Gattuso has cast doubt over a possible move for Fabregas, however, telling DAZM that Financial Fair Play could be an issue:

Richard Heathcote/Getty Images Sport

We have stakes. We cannot do what we want.

The club has been clear. Fabregas? There are important figures involved.

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has admitted he would be happy to keep hold of Fabregas, saying:

In this position we have only two players, Jorginho and Fabregas, so for me it would be really a problem without Cesc.

I want him to stay, I don’t know the final decision of Cesc and the club of course.

But for me it’s very important and if Cesc will go I think that we need to buy another player, and it’s not easy because, technically, Cesc is a very important player.

And I think that in the market it’s very difficult to find a player with his characteristics.

Fabregas is in his fifth season at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles along the way.

Solskjaer hails Man United star for being ‘different class’ against Bournemouth

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Marcus Rashford following his performance vs Bournemouth.

The Englishman scored a goal and grabbed an assist in a fine display of his attacking talents.

Rashford is well known for his pace but his work-rate and dynamism deserves praise as well as he keeps up his recent good form.

Fans previously complained of how static Romelu Lukaku is so the youngster’s movement is surely a welcome change.

The Belgian himself should also enjoy working under Solskjaer but Marcus could keep him out of the starting XI for now.

Ole has been consistently positive since his arrival and there’s no doubt that’s been a factor in the improved mood in the dressing room.

Plenty of fans doubted whether Rashford could truly become a striker but more keen eyed observers noticed that it was simply Jose Mourinho’s system that didn’t suit him.

The academy product could work on either flank but the Portuguese manager often needed a powerful presence up top to suit his style.

Unfortunately that’s not Marcus’ strong suit but under Solskjaer there’s no reason why he can’t lead the line since his other, more suitable attributes are required in the new system.

Pogba: Man United players are enjoying football again under Solskjaer

Paul Pogba aimed a thinly veiled dig at former manager Jose Mourinho following yet another superb attacking performance from Manchester United and the Frenchman under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

A brace from Pogba, coupled with goals from the excellent Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku off the bench, handed Man United a convincing 4-1 win over AFC Bournemouth.

United have now recorded three wins in a row, scoring 12 goals in the process, in the space of nine days under the salutary influence of Solskjaer.

Speaking after the game, Pogba stressed that United players were starting to enjoy football again after Mourinho.

How does Mourinho defend himself having seen what this group of players – who he claimed were unable to attack – have done over the last three games?

The 55-year-old genuinely managed to convince supporters – including myself to a degree – that this team, and indeed specific players, were not good enough to rip teams apart. He claimed the club needed to invest further. He belittled the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, and of course Pogba for failing to provide him with what he wanted.

Such sentiments spring from a lack of trust – from a wider sense of paranoia which, with each high profile failure, grips Mourinho even tighter. What this creates, in practice, is a carousel of sensational talent spending its time trying to contain Brighton and Hove Albion.

Bigger tests of Solskjaer’s tactical acumen lie around the corner, of course. But against a team like Bournemouth – whose squad is worth much less and not as jam-packed with quality – the players simply needed to be reminded of how good they were, and allowed to express themselves accordingly.

Solskjaer explains why Bournemouth win was better than Huddersfield

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted the win over Bournemouth was better than the win over Huddersfield last time out.

The Norwegian has overseen a three game winning run but has praised his stars for their latest victory.

United beat Cardiff City 5-1, Huddersfield 3-1 and Bournemouth 4-1 so far in consecutively impressive displays.

Paul Pogba has starred in all of those matches and has quickly silenced his critics who questioned pretty much all the aspects of his game.

Solskjaer isn’t just happier with the latest victory due to the scoreline but mores with how his side controlled the game.

Ole is correct. During the Huddersfield game it was far more chaotic and less controlled than the Bournemouth game.

Even with ten men on the field the Red Devils were able to correctly assess when to take risks and when to hold off.

Solskjaer always set his players up to attack but he would’ve been more pleased with that aspect as well as the improvement in the quality of passing.

What he won’t be happy with is the defending. Manchester United weren’t terrible against Bournemouth but their inability to keep a clean sheet so far is a concern.

Better sides will probably punish Ole’s men even more and then the attacking risks will no longer prove worthwhile.

Man United fans stunned by Pogba's performance vs Bournemouth

Manchester United fans were left speechless by Paul Pogba’s performance vs Bournemouth were he continued his fine form.

The Frenchman is not the only player to experience a revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he is the one most talked about and rightfully so.

Against United’s opponents Pogba was faultless, grabbing two goals and an assist in one of his most complete displays at Old Trafford.

There’s no doubting that if Solskjaer wants to keep the job permanently he’ll have to get the most out of the midfielder and so far he’s managed to do so.

Jose Mourinho must be watching on with envy and perhaps a little confusion as to where this Paul was during his own reign.

The Red Devils have yet to come up against truly difficult opponents yet under Solskjaer’s management but their current momentum will be of great help.

Tottenham are on the horizon, offering the perfect opportunity for Pogba to make his mark against a bigger team.

Often accused of being a small game player, the former Juventus man can silence his critics once and for all with a similar performance against Mauricio Pochetinno’s men.

A win would be desperately needed considering how the top four spots would hopefully be within reach by then.

Player ratings: Solskjaer wins three in a row, Pogba sensational

David de Gea 6- Reliable as always but no real difficult saves to make. Will be disappointed to not keep the well sought after clean sheet.

Ashley Young 6- Got forward at every opportunity and wasn’t really challenged defensively.

Eric Bailly 5- Was solid but rusty before being sent off. His rashness needs to be cut out of his game for him to develop further. Opportunity squandered.

Victor Lindelof 7- Played well with Bailly and carried the ball forwards well too. Passing was neat and always with a purpose.

Luke Shaw 7- Given freedom to get forward and took advantage of it. Could form a great partnership with Anthony Martial.

Ander Herrera 8- As energetic as ever, giving a good balance to the midfield but also provided a delightful assist for Paul Pogba.

Nemanja Matic 7- Always present to protect his defenders but his revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been fantastic as well.

Paul Pogba 10- What more could one ask from the Frenchman? Man of the match without a doubt and not just for the brace he scored but for the beautiful passing on show as well that resulted in an assist.

Anthony Martial 8- Whenever United are in their free-flowing best, the winger always seem to be at the centre of it. Solid return to the starting XI.

Jesse Lingard 6- Not a poor game but not a great one either. Was a bit stop start and will be hoping for more next time out.

Marcus Rashford 8- Ran himself into the ground and deservedly got a goal to go alongside his fantastic assist for Pogba’s opener. Romelu Lukaku should be scared.

Substitutes

Romelu Lukaku 7- Made sure he made an impact off the bench to keep Rashford on his toes. Well taken goal and hopefully one of many more to come.

Chelsea player ratings: Crystal Palace (A)

Chelsea recorded their third successive away victory under Maurizio Sarri for the first time as N’Golo Kante’s second-half strike was enough to secure all three points for the Blues and consolidate their place in the top four, following yet another slip up from Arsenal – as they were comprehensively thrashed by Liverpool last night.

Chelsea’s encounters on the road have commonly been cagey affairs in which they dominate possession and are made to break their opponents down through a precise but not often direct tiki-taka style of play, and Crystal Palace presented much the same sort of issues as Brighton and Watford have over the past few weeks. The pace of Wilfred Zaha and Andros Townsend though presented a far more apprehensive proposition for the Chelsea backline, but the disciplined performances of Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta ensured they barely threatened.

Just after the interval David Luiz, unimpeded by the Palace midfield, strolled into the final third before playing an inch-perfect ball into the path of Kante who controlled, swivelled and struck the ball into the net from close range albeit with the help of some poor goalkeeping from Vincente Guaita. Willian stung the palms of Palace’s 31-year-old stopper, a summer signing from Getafe, but Chelsea were more concerned with keeping hold of another precious three points in their hunt for Champions League football.

Confirmed starting XI Man United vs Bournemouth: Martial starts

Anthony Martial has recovered from illness to make the starting XI for Manchester United’s meeting with AFC Bournemouth this afternoon.

The Frenchman missed the Boxing Day win over Huddersfield Town, with Juan Mata filling his place as Man United won 3-1.

Alexis Sanchez has not made the squad after recently returning from a hamstring injury. Romelu Lukaku only makes the bench after coming back this week from compassionate leave.

Lazio considering swoop for Chelsea defender

Lazio are considering a swoop for Chelsea right-back Davide Zappacosta in the January transfer window.

According to The Sunday Mirror, via The BBC, Lazio will move for Zappacosta if they are unable to strike a deal for Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian.

Lazio and Inter Milan are both competing to sign Darmian, but the former will look to snap up Zappacosta if Inter land the Manchester United man.

Richard Heathcote/Getty Images Sport

Zappacosta has had to patiently wait for his chance at Stamford Bridge this season, with the bulk of his minutes coming in the cup competitions.

Cesar Azpilicueta is the first-choice right-back for Maurizio Sarri and the Spaniard has been in impressive form at the back so far this season.

The report does not state whether or not Chelsea would be willing to let Zappacosta leave, with no other senior right-backs in the current first-team squad.

Bayern Munich name price for Chelsea transfer target

Chelsea have been told that they will have to pay £30m to sign Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels.

According to The BBC, Bayern are demanding £30m for the German international, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Maurizio Sarri is keen to improve his defensive options and is eyeing a January swoop for Hummels.

The transfer window opens on Tuesday, but the report does not claim whether or not Chelsea are willing to match the £30m valuation.

Octavio Passos/Getty Images Sport

Hummels has made 15 appearances for Bayern Munich in all competitions so far this season, scoring once.

The 30-year-old is close to making his 100th appearance for the club, since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

He made over 300 appearances for Dortmund in nine years at the club, winning two Bundesliga titles.

David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger are Chelsea’s current first-choice centre-back partnership, but Sarri is looking to potentially replace one of them next month.

Romelu Lukaku, on the other hand, has returned from passionate leave and may have the chance against Eddie Howe’s side to regain some form and, perhaps just as importantly, his reputation among Man United fans.

Here is the full squad ahead of Solskjaer’s third game as United boss.

Big injury blow for Man United, key attacking player injured for Bournemouth

Manchester United will be missing one of their key attacking stars in the upcoming clash against Bournemouth.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have even more incentive to win after both Arsenal and Tottenham dropped points this weekend.

A win for United could close the gap to the top four after it previously looked out of reach before the Norwegian’s arrival.

Under Jose Mourinho the team would often not capitalise under such opportunities and it’s costed them so far this season.

Fans will be hoping things will be different under Solskjaer and the players have the perfect opportunity to prove it is against Bournemouth.

Ole had previously mentioned how Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were in contention for the game.

However, it appears as though the Chilean may not feature after all and could still need more time to recover from his injury.

On the other hand, players have previously failed to report to the team hotel before featuring in matches nonetheless.

The majority of fans are willing to give Sanchez another chance to prove his worth in the hopes that Solskjaer’s football can bring the best out of him.

If the winger doesn’t improve his form, his time at Old Trafford could truly be up by the summer.

Luke Shaw gives the main difference between Solskjaer and Mourinho

Manchester United star Luke Shaw has revealed the main difference between Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, claiming the later is positive.

The Norwegian took over from the former as caretaker manager and has around five to six months to make a lasting impact.

Solskjaer hasn’t made his desire to remain permanently a secret and is hoping to win over the hearts of the fans as well as the board.

Shaw kicked off his time with Mourinho on the wrong foot but managed to thrive towards the end, even earning a new contract for the foreseeable future.

Ole will probably continue to rely on the Englishman and supporters have responded to his attacking style already.

Plenty of the players also seemed to be pleased with how the former Molde manager has handled things so far with even former Jose favourite Nemanja Matic complimenting the new boss.

United are yet to be truly tested in Solskjaer’s reign and the character of the squad will be revealed then.

Hopefully the club legend can keep up the winning run so that the Red Devils can squeeze into the top four.

Whether it’s Ole or another manager in the summer, Champions League football will be crucial for the next season.

Paul Pogba explains why 2018 has been emotional for him

Paul Pogba has opened up about how he kept his late father in mind throughout a triumphant World Cup campaign with France in the summer.

The 25-year-old’s father, Fassou Antonine Pogba, passed away on 14 May 2017, just ten days prior to Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final, during which Pogba scored the opener and produced a ‘Man of the Match’ performance.

A year later, following a season without trophies under Jose Mourinho, Pogba scored in the World Cup final against Croatia to secure France’s second ever triumph on the biggest of all stages.

The celebrations were cathartic, truly emotional, full of giddy joy and comradery. But as Pogba notes, beneath all of that lay a yearning to share this moment with his father, who would have no doubt guided him through the tournament.

In the same interview, it was revealed that Pogba wore shin-pads bearing a photo of Fassou during the 4-2 win over Croatia in Moscow, which also had on them a message which read:

“Oh Lord, don’t chastise me for what they say, forgive me for what they don’t know and make me better then what they think of me.”

There will be many who never shake the idea that Pogba is some dressing room insurgent hellbent on subverting his manager’s influence.

But to me, Pogba comes across as a genuinely good, pious individual who merely wants the best for himself, his family, his teammates and, of course, his boyhood club.

Shaw reveals what he was doing when he heard Mourinho was sacked

Luke Shaw has revealed that news of Jose Mourinho’s departure was brought to him by his girlfriend as he was taking a morning shower.

It was announced on the morning of 18 December that the 55-year-old, who had overseen the club’s worst start to a league season for 28 years, was no longer manager of Manchester United.

Since then, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken over as caretaker manager and stimulated a wholesale change in mood and style, scoring eight goals in wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town with some daring, precise attacking football in the final third.

Speaking in an interview with Sky, Shaw opened up about how he was taking an innocuous morning shower when his girlfriend broke the news about his manager, with whom he had a difficult relationship for most of his time at Old Trafford.

“The truth? My girlfriend told me,” he said.

“I woke up in the morning and had a shower and she ran out of the room and told me. I did not have a clue, I didn’t look at my phone or anything. That’s how I found out… from my girlfriend.”

I was, like many, lying in bed bargaining with myself about how long I could stay under the covers, when the phone suddenly started blowing up with notifications.

The news took a while to sink in. Writing the confirmation piece – which, on reflection, I should have pre-written immediately after that Liverpool game – felt extremely strange. The immediacy of it was so antithetical to how United as a club operates. Even during the 5-1 win over Cardiff, it had not quite sunk in that the toxicity of Mourinho, whose main function this season has been to drag people down to his level of misery, was finally gone.

At Real Madrid, Mourinho’s departure was greeted by Carlo Ancelotti winning the Champions League the following season. At Chelsea, the Portuguese’s successor, Antonio Conte, won the league in his first campaign in England.

You can only a similar fortune is bestowed on United over the next 12 months.

Manchester United players were pictured in good spirits during training under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of Sunday’s meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian’s appointment has ignited a total change in the tone and feel of Man United’s performances. Eight goals have been scored in games against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town.

Pressure will be on Solskjaer and his squad, which now includes returning pair Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, to record a third successive win against Eddie Howe’s side.

Here are a selection of photos of Man United players putting in the hard yards for their new manager at Carrington on Friday.

Man United fans have their say on Alexis and Lukaku starting vs Bournemouth

Most Manchester United supporters are against the idea of Alexis Sanchez or Romelu Lukaku returning to the starting XI against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.

That said, a considerable number want to see how Alexis, at the expense of Jesse Lingard, operates under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s quicker, more aggressive style of play in the final third.

The same cannot be said for Romelu Lukaku, whose popularity among the fanbase has dwindled amid a terrible run of form during which the Belgian has scored just twice since mid-September.

Both players are in contention to play against Bournemouth, but Solskjaer made it clear in Friday’s press conference that the pair would need to earn their place back in the starting XI. We put it to the good people of Twitter to see whether they wanted either player to start.

Many like the idea of Alexis, freed from the shackling effect of Mourinho’s tactics, buzzing around the final third alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. This is, without doubt, a truly tantalising prospect.

There were others who took this question as an opportunity to bash Lukaku. His stock is at an all time low among many supporters and placing him in the starting XI at the expense of Rashford, having impressed so much against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, would be unjust.

[Player Ratings] Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal – Gunners Crumble at Anfield

Arsenal crumbled at Anfield against Liverpool on Saturday evening despite taking an early lead, but head back to north London on the back of a 5-1 thrashing.

There aren’t too many positives to take from the performance at Anfield, besides encouraging signs from Alex Iwobi and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who claimed his first Gunners goal in the Premier League.

The two big talking points for Gunners fans, besides the obvious heavy defeat, was Alexandre Lacazette on the bench, some questionable officiating on the night for penalty claims, and Mesut Ozil completely left out of the matchday squad.

Ultimately was this line-up a big mistake by Unai Emery and do the team need a complete defensive revamp?

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6.5
After just 11 minutes Ainsley Maitland-Niles was in the right place to tap in for his first ever Arsenal goal and being a flurry of goals.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 5

Shkodran Mustafi – 5
Hauled off at half-time by Unai Emery – conceding four goals was enough to end the German’s nightmare at Anfield early on.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 5

Sead Kolasinac – 6
Penalised for a relatively soft-looking penalty for Liverpool to convert a fifth goal on the night. Night ended around 10 minutes from time – one for the Bosnian to forget.

Lucas Torreira – 6

Granit Xhaka – 6
Somewhat lucky to have stayed on the pitch in the first half after a late challenge on Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson – yellow carded.

Aaron Ramsey – 6

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5

Alex Iwobi – 6.5
Fine assist to get the Gunners off the mark on the 11th minute – but Gunners fans know what happened next with the scoreline…

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (on at 80 mins) – N/A

Sub: Laurent Koscielny (on at half-time) – 6

Sub: Alexandre Lacazette (on at 75 mins) – 6
Alexandre Lacazette on for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – should the two have started together? Would the Gunners have made the scoreline a bit more respectable had the two started? We’ll never know…

European giants latest club to enter race for Chelsea winger

Bayern Munich are the latest club to profess an interest in signing Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The youngster has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in January, either in a permanent or temporary capacity.

Kristof Terreur of Het Laatste Nieuws claims that Bayern are prepared to follow Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the race for the 18-year-old.

Maurizio Sarri has taken a liking to the prodigy, and has included him several times so far this campaign.

Five appearances don’t seem to be cutting it, however. Viewing the success of other Premier League (or former Premier League) youngsters in Reiss Nelson and Jadon Sancho out in Germany, it’s perhaps understandable the Wandsworth-native is itching for regular playing time.

Whether Bayern would be interested in pursuing a permanent or loan deal remains to be seen, although the precedent for prospects seems to be being set for Hudson-Odoi – use him, or lose him.

Chelsea to battle AC Milan in race to sign Eredivisie star

Chelsea are thought to be interested in bringing Mexico star Hirving Lozano to Stamford Bridge, but will have to rival Italian giants AC Milan, according to Calciomercato.com.

The 23-year-old, who currently plies his trade for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, has impressed in Europe since joining from Mexican side Pachuca in a deal worth €8 million last summer.

Lozano has found the back of the net 28 times in 46 appearances in the Eredivisie, with the forward also scoring the winner for Mexico against Germany at the World Cup over the summer.

The Mexican international’s consistent performances have alerted numerous clubs around Europe, with AC Milan and Chelsea showing a firm interest in the player.

It is believed that AC Milan will have to sell in order to bring Lozano to the San Siro, however, if Chelsea’s move for Christian Pulisic falls through, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri may well attempt to bring the dynamic forward to the Premier League in the new year.

4-3-3: How Solskjaer will plan to claim third successive win vs Bournemouth

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to make some adjustments to his starting XI for Manchester United’s meeting with AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.

The return of Anthony Martial from illness gives Solskjaer the chance to once again let loose the Frenchman, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and the rejuvenated Paul Pogba as an attacking quartet.

Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku are in contention to play the game, but it seems unlikely that either player will immediately return to the starting XI.

With that in mind, here is how we think Man United will line up against Eddie Howe’s side this weekend.

Ander Herrera was the midfielder rested on Boxing Day, so it seems logical that Nemanja Matic – an overworked player this season – drops out this time around in order to give Marouane Fellaini a chance to shine at the base of midfield in this new set-up.

Solskjaer will likewise give Ashley Young the nod over Diogo Dalot at right-back as he continues to rotate certain players throughout the busy festive period.

There is hot competition for places in that front three. Lukaku and Sanchez will be chomping at the bit to get back in this team, which suddenly looks like a lot of fun to play in. But as the boss himself noted on Friday, the pair must prove themselves first.

“I cannot do anything for their performances on the pitch; Paul has done it,” he said.

“I’m here to keep them on the path and it’s up to them when they get a chance – that’s the name of the game as a footballer.

“I gave some guidelines of course on expression, freedom of expression but that’s how I’ve always been as a manager – just enjoy playing for this club. That’s the best time of your life, but it’s not a bad time to be manager for a while.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms when Chris Smalling will return from foot injury

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed in Friday’s press conference that Chris Smalling should recover from a foot injury in time for Manchester United’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on January 13.

The Englishman picked up an injury ahead of Man United’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool earlier this month, pulling out of the starting XI at the last minute, and has not featured since.

In his absence, defensive duo Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones have performed solidly at the back in wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday morning, Solskjaer reaffirmed that Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were all set for imminent returns, but noted Smalling would take slightly longer.

Solskjaer has got players looking to play forward once more, reestablishing an atmosphere of positivity among the group, but something remains rotten at the heart of United’s defence.

By the time Mourinho was sacked after 17 Premier League games, United had already conceded more goals than they did for the whole of last season. And that sloppiness has continued: a penalty for Cardiff City and an unnecessary set-piece goal for Huddersfield, who could have scored on other occasions, underline a sense of shakiness inherent within this team.

Against better sides with more pace and movement, the story may well be quite different for United. Solskjaer knows he will need to make fundamental changes.

Chelsea agree a €50m deal to sign star forward

Christian Pulisic has an agreement to make a transfer to Chelsea and he will move to the London club in the summer, according to German outlet BILD.

The transfer should cost the Blues around £45m.

Chelsea reportedly  wanted to bring the American international to the club in for January but Dortmund wouldn’t allow that deal to go through, so the parties agreed a deal that will see him move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Pulisic has been linked with moves to numerous clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United but it appears that his future lies at Chelsea.

Blues fans will be hoping that the Dortmund star is coming in as an addition to the current squad and not as a replacement for Eden Hazard.

The Belgian continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid and the speculation about his future continues to mount as he is yet to sign a new contract.

Proof that Paul Pogba is captain material at Manchester United

Paul Pogba demonstrated his importance to the dressing room with some rousing words of encouragement in the tunnel ahead of Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

The Frenchman was reportedly branded as a ‘virus’ to the dressing room by former manager Jose Mourinho, who dropped him for his final three Premier League games as Man United manager.

His resurgence since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over has been remarkable: two games, two goals, two assists.

And as this piece of footage shows, Pogba has rediscovered his voice off the pitch as well, demanding of his teammates to begin the game by pressing hard and starting the game strong – which, under Mourinho, would presumably result in a two month period playing with the reserves.

Many genuinely believed that Pogba was the central toxic force in the dressing room, whilst somehow totally ignoring the curmudgeon sitting in the manager’s seat, whose main contributions this season were to belittle his players, harp on about past achievements, and play in a way which reduced Pogba – a World Cup winner – to dwelling on the ball in his own half.

All Solskjaer has done, really, is let Pogba and his teammates breathe. The Frenchman is an inherently expressive individual. Why, then, would you do anything other than let the man express himself, both on and off the pitch?

It has certainly worked like magic so far.

Solskjaer sends clear message to youth players, very encouraging for United fans

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear in Friday’s press conference that players from the academy would get first team opportunities this season.

The Norwegian brought on academy starlet Angel Gomes for just his second ever Premier League appearance during Man United’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

Youngsters like Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood and Jimmy Garner, who have all featured in match-day squads this season, are also viewed as potential first team players in the future.

Speaking at a press conference at Carrington on Friday morning, Solskjaer stressed that youngsters would get their chance to impress over the next five months.

There is no pressure on United or Solskjaer this season. Good results would be nice – the two wins so far, hallmarked by bold attacking football, have been enough to put smiles back on faces – but when it comes to meaningful concrete targets in May there are none. Top four is very unlikely. The Champions League is even less likely. Maybe an FA Cup run?

Supporters and the wider watching world know that, following the calamity brought by Jose Mourinho in the summer, what truly matters is next season, and how United prepare for the long term.

In the meantime, when has there been a better opportunity for the youngsters to enjoy some first team football?

Midfielder to play out wide? Our Chelsea XI to face Palace

Chelsea travel away to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

The Blues come into the game off the back of a 2-1 win over Watford on Boxing Day.

Eden Hazard scored both goals as Chelsea bounced back from their defeat to Leicester last weekend.

Meanwhile, Palace beat champions Manchester City 3-2 last weekend, although they were held to a 0-0 draw by Cardiff.

Here is how we expect Chelsea boss Mauricio Sarri to line up his side…

Club chief addresses claims that striker has asked to join Chelsea

AC Milan sporting director Leonardo has poured cold water over claims that Gonzalo Higuain has asked to join Chelsea.

As reported by Italian football journalist Simeone Nobilini, Leonardo claims that the Italian side are still very much on the same page as the striker and want him to see out the season at the San Siro.

Higuain is once again being heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in a deal that would see him join up with his former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

The latter was very keen to sign the forward over the summer, but Chelsea refused to meet Juventus’ huge asking price.

Reports in Italy have indicated that the player is unhappy at Milan, who also look unlikely to take up their option to buy following recent FFP problems.

There have now been suggestions that Chelsea could effectively take over the loan agreement with Juventus and have the striker for the second half of the season, while also maintaining the option to buy in the summer.

Chelsea defender sees January move fall through due to wages

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is unlikely to complete a January move back to his former side Aston Villa.

According to the Telegraph’s John Percy, Dean Smith’s side have deemed the deal to be too expensive ahead of the January transfer window.

Chelsea are ready to let the player leave in January either on loan or permanently, but his wages are proving to be a stumbling block.

Cahill is believed to be earning somewhere in the region of £110,000 a week and Chelsea would prefer for a club to pay that in full if they are to loan him until the summer.

Jan Kruger/Getty Images Sport

Villa had been among a number of clubs looking at Cahill as a potential signing after he fell out of favour under Maurizio Sarri.

While a move for Cahill in January is not completely being ruled out, it is highly unlikely he will end up at Villa Park by the end of the month.

The report claims that Villa could go back in for the player as a potential transfer target in the summer if they secure promotion.

Shocking £10,000 per match clause revealed in ex-player’s contract

Shocking £10,000 per match clause revealed in ex-player’s contract

In contract details revealed via the Mail, it’s said that now former Arsenal player and England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a clause in his contract that meant former club Southampton were cashing in.

The clause in the contract apparently stated that Arsenal would have to pay the Saints £10,000 per match, but only if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain featured for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move to north London in 2011 was seen a big opportunity for the then youngster to become one of the country’s top English stars, he however failed to hold down a regular place and was sold to Liverpool back in 2017 – and has been injured since the end of last season.

This new detail that has emerged in his Arsenal contract though could explain why Oxlade-Chamberlain’s time at the Gunners was somewhat stop-start. Admittedly £10,0000 per match for 20 minutes of action is not that much for a Premier League club to deal with, but if the player was not in favour or out of form then why bring him on if you have to pay a clause too – may have been the question asked at the time.

The report in the Mail quotes the reveal from a new book, The Transfer Market: The Inside Stories by author Alan Gernon, which states that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was ‘predominantly used as a substitute, often around the 71-minute mark’.

Despite the Englishman picking up a serious injury which is likely to keep him out until the end of this season for Liverpool, he showed real intent after leaving the Gunners, scoring a few key goals en route to the Champions League final, as well as scoring three and assisting seven in the Premier League.
