Chelsea recorded their third successive away victory under Maurizio Sarri for the first time as N’Golo Kante’s second-half strike was enough to secure all three points for the Blues and consolidate their place in the top four, following yet another slip up from Arsenal – as they were comprehensively thrashed by Liverpool last night.
Chelsea’s encounters on the road have commonly been cagey affairs in which they dominate possession and are made to break their opponents down through a precise but not often direct tiki-taka style of play, and Crystal Palace presented much the same sort of issues as Brighton and Watford have over the past few weeks. The pace of Wilfred Zaha and Andros Townsend though presented a far more apprehensive proposition for the Chelsea backline, but the disciplined performances of Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta ensured they barely threatened.
Just after the interval David Luiz, unimpeded by the Palace midfield, strolled into the final third before playing an inch-perfect ball into the path of Kante who controlled, swivelled and struck the ball into the net from close range albeit with the help of some poor goalkeeping from Vincente Guaita. Willian stung the palms of Palace’s 31-year-old stopper, a summer signing from Getafe, but Chelsea were more concerned with keeping hold of another precious three points in their hunt for Champions League football.
