[Player Ratings] Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal – Gunners Crumble at Anfield

Arsenal crumbled at Anfield against Liverpool on Saturday evening despite taking an early lead, but head back to north London on the back of a 5-1 thrashing.

There aren’t too many positives to take from the performance at Anfield, besides encouraging signs from Alex Iwobi and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who claimed his first Gunners goal in the Premier League.

The two big talking points for Gunners fans, besides the obvious heavy defeat, was Alexandre Lacazette on the bench, some questionable officiating on the night for penalty claims, and Mesut Ozil completely left out of the matchday squad.

Ultimately was this line-up a big mistake by Unai Emery and do the team need a complete defensive revamp?

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6.5
After just 11 minutes Ainsley Maitland-Niles was in the right place to tap in for his first ever Arsenal goal and being a flurry of goals.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 5

Shkodran Mustafi – 5
Hauled off at half-time by Unai Emery – conceding four goals was enough to end the German’s nightmare at Anfield early on.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 5

Sead Kolasinac – 6
Penalised for a relatively soft-looking penalty for Liverpool to convert a fifth goal on the night. Night ended around 10 minutes from time – one for the Bosnian to forget.

Lucas Torreira – 6

Granit Xhaka – 6
Somewhat lucky to have stayed on the pitch in the first half after a late challenge on Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson – yellow carded.

Aaron Ramsey – 6

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5

Alex Iwobi – 6.5
Fine assist to get the Gunners off the mark on the 11th minute – but Gunners fans know what happened next with the scoreline…

Sub: Laurent Koscielny (on at half-time) – 6

Sub: Alexandre Lacazette (on at 75 mins) – 6
Alexandre Lacazette on for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – should the two have started together? Would the Gunners have made the scoreline a bit more respectable had the two started? We’ll never know…
