In contract details revealed via the Mail, it’s said that now former Arsenal player and England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a clause in his contract that meant former club Southampton were cashing in.
The clause in the contract apparently stated that Arsenal would have to pay the Saints £10,000 per match, but only if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain featured for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move to north London in 2011 was seen a big opportunity for the then youngster to become one of the country’s top English stars, he however failed to hold down a regular place and was sold to Liverpool back in 2017 – and has been injured since the end of last season.
This new detail that has emerged in his Arsenal contract though could explain why Oxlade-Chamberlain’s time at the Gunners was somewhat stop-start. Admittedly £10,0000 per match for 20 minutes of action is not that much for a Premier League club to deal with, but if the player was not in favour or out of form then why bring him on if you have to pay a clause too – may have been the question asked at the time.
The report in the Mail quotes the reveal from a new book, The Transfer Market: The Inside Stories by author Alan Gernon, which states that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was ‘predominantly used as a substitute, often around the 71-minute mark’.
Despite the Englishman picking up a serious injury which is likely to keep him out until the end of this season for Liverpool, he showed real intent after leaving the Gunners, scoring a few key goals en route to the Champions League final, as well as scoring three and assisting seven in the Premier League.
