The two attacking players Man United can no longer carry

Manchester United’s disheartening form continued after taking on Arsenal as they were held 1-1 at Old Trafford.

Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard both started the fixture but it’s safe to say they had little impact on the fixture.

Such was their performances that United’s goal only came through a fantastic effort from Scott McTominay from long-range.

Lingard started in his preferred attacking-midfield role while, to be fair to Pereira, he was shoved out wide to the right flank.

The Red Devils lack of attacking quality has continuously shown this season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer certainly regretting not adding more to his squad.

The small amount of passes, duels won and chances created are arguably the most shocking from the pair and it begs the question why were they so poor?

Lingard’s case is a little tough because he’s been out of form for quite some time and it’s worrying what’s happened.

From a little later after his incredible performance at the Emirates, the pacy Englishman has looked a shadow of himself for a long period of time.

Pereira’s problem though could be to play him as an attacking midfielder in the hopes it will get more out of him.

In fact, switching their performances could be the key to seeing them both improve as Lingard could find himself again in a position he’s played in, in the past.

Keane pinpoints why Man United didn't beat Arsenal in disappointing draw

Manchester United great Roy Keane believes his former side missed a huge opportunity to beat Arsenal after their disappointing draw.

The clash ended 1-1 with fans on both sides and neutrals feeling rather underwhelmed by the occasion.

It’s safe to say the fixture was a far cry from a classic and better quality was needed to justify the attention this match received.

Scott McTominay scored a fantastic long-range effort but his hard work was undone by Axel Tuanzebe‘s error which allowed Arsenal to break through and net the equaliser.

United had more chances through the young Scotsman and Marcus Rashford but unfortunately failed to convert either effort.

According to Manchester Evening News, Keane said: “In the second half I thought it was shocking – United lacked a bit of belief to finish it off.

“The game was there for the taking for United, they will be kicking themselves. I’m not sure what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would take from it, not too many positives.”

To be fair to Keane there was more context as he also discussed the need to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the young Manchester United players a chance to grow.

He also warned supporters it will get worse before it gets better and so everyone may be in for a rough ride this season.

If Solskjaer wasn’t looking before, he must surely have an eye on one or two creative prospects to bring in during the January transfer window as they could’ve potentially made the difference tonight in a lacklustre match.

100% tackles won, 6 recoveries, one goal: Academy star superb vs. Arsenal

Scott McTominay once again played a senior role in yet another immature display from Manchester United against Arsenal.

Following a frantic and truly painful 40 minutes, it was the young Scot who took a touch and fired a powerful, pinpoint strike into the top corner.

And as Man United pushed for another goal in the second half to no avail, McTominay can be viewed as one of the few to truly take the aggression to Arsenal on a consistent basis.

McTominay’s numbers from the game tell the story of what was another mature display in a big game.

There is a lot of talk about the usefulness of heart, of whether pumping your chest and really sticking your boot in it really actually changes anything at this level.

In games between the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool, you get the impression that the fizzing attacking patterns and perfect touches somehow transcend whatever ‘heart’ is.

But when you have a game like this, when banter meets banter, players like McTominay – bustling, totally up for it, snarling, seemingly without any care for his own personal health – really do come to the fore.

United fans might not like McTominay. They might not think he is United quality. But he is. He is the talisman that this club deserves at the moment.

Arsenal secured a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

It was a cagey start to the match at Old Trafford. It took a whole 30 minutes for the opening shot on target and it was Bernd Leno who got down well to deny Ricardo Perreira.

Next, it was Nicolas Pepe who forced a save from David De Gea at the other end before the Gunners had the first big opportunity of the match. The Spanish goalkeeper made a smart double save to deny Bukayo Saka and then Matteo Guendouzi.

But the Gunners failed to reorganise and United countered well. The ball dropped back to Scott McTominay who glided the ball into the roof of the net on the brink of halftime.

Arsenal started the second half very much in the ascendancy and soon found a route back into the match. Axel Taunzebe gave the ball away and Saka slid the ball in for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score. The referee ruled it out for offside but VAR showed it was a woeful error and the goal was given.

Here are the match highlights (will open in a separate tab).

Arsenal came back to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

—–
Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Manchester United v Arsenal
Venue: Old Trafford
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 30/09/2019
—–

It was tight and cagey affair early on at Old Trafford, something which Arsenal fans haven’t been used to in recent weeks. It took a full 20 minutes for the first shot on target to arrive and it was Ricardo Perreira who forced a smart stop from Bernd Leno down to his left.

The Gunners kept things tight at the back but were wasteful on the rare occasion they found the ball in the final third. Nicolas Pepe had a half-chance when he forced David De Gea to save at his near post.

It took almost 45 minutes for the decisive moment to arrive but it eventually did. An Arsenal counter saw Bukayo Saka force a smart save from De Gea and the Spaniard was up quickly to deny Matteo Guendouzi on the follow-up.

Arsenal’s resulting corner came to nothing and United countered from it. The Gunners must have thought the danger had passed when Dan James’ cross was cut out. Instead, United regained possession and slid it back for Scott McTominay who took a touch before driving the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the area.

The second half began and Arsenal looked a little more comfortable. The Gunners saw more of the ball and started to control the match. But they lacked a little creativity and Dani Ceballos entered the fray.

The second goal came soon after but it had little to do with the Spaniard. Instead, it was United who gave the ball away in their own area and Saka slid in Aubameyang. The Gabon striker chipped it past De Gea to score but the referee blew up for offside. VAR showed that Aubameyang was well onside and the goal was awarded.

Arsenal pushed forward in hopes of finding that winning goal and very nearly got it. A cut-back cross from Calum Chambers found Bukayo Saka whose powerful shot took a deflection off Victor Lindelof when De Gea was beaten.

The game petered out in the final 20 minutes. Both sides pressed on for the win but neither really had the ability to find it and it finished 1-1.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 7

Brnd Leno had a good night. The German stopper made a couple of fine saves to keep his side in the match. The first stop of the night to deny Perreira was probably the best of all.

Calum Chambers – 7.5

He started slowly but Calum Chambers really grew into this one. There was some fear that the Englishman would be taken through the wringer by Dan James – just like he was by Jefferson Montero several years ago. The early signs suggested as much but it was a composed and assured performance from the Englishman after that. He adapted his game despite the early yellow card and put in a good performance.

David Luiz – 6.5

This was probably David Luiz’s best performance in an Arsenal shirt but he still didn’t play particularly well. The Brazilian had a few shaky moments on the ball early on but did grow into the match. He had a few good interceptions and cleared his lines well enough.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 6.5

It was a better night for Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The Greek defender did well enough at the back and made a couple of vital headers.

Sead Kolasinac – 5.5

He was poor. Sead Kolasinac almost cost his side on a couple of occasions with his inability to close down attacking players and some wayward clearances. He was a little fortunate not to concede a penaltyto cap it all.

Granit Xhaka – 5.5

Granit Xhaka hardly covered himself in glory in his first match as the official club captain. The Swiss international was slow and laboured in the first-half and will attract some criticism for his involvement in the United opener.

Matteo Guendouzi – 8

He did well. It was another all-action performance from Matteo Guendouzi in the centre of the park with the Frenchman popping up in all areas. He was tireless tonight.

Lucas Torreira – 5.5

He didn’t have his best match. It wasn’t the match for Lucas Torreira who struggled in the physical battle against Paul Pogba. The Uruguayan midfielder didn’t get much done defensively and had little opportunity to get forward with the ball.

Sub: Dani Ceballos (55′) – 5

He struggled to make an impact on the match.

Nicolas Pepe – 5

He had a poor night. Nicolas Pepe struggled to get into the match and just looked unsure of himself all night. His passing was sloppy and he took it a bit too long to get his shots away and the ball moving. He’s a confidence player without confidence right now.

Sub: Reiss Nelson (75′) – 6

He looked pretty bright on the ball but most of Reiss Nelson’s work was defensive, covering down the flanks.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6

He was poor this evening. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed the all-important goal but his overall performance was really poor. The Gabon striker couldn’t keep hold of the ball and was caught offside on far too many occasions. Fortunately, the one that mattered was overruled.

Bukayo Saka – 7

It was an impressive performance from Bukayo Saka. He was lively throughout and showed composure for the Arsenal equaliser. Still, he will look back on this match with regret after failing to convert that all-important chance at 1-1.

Sub: Joe Willock (80′) – 6.5

Joe Willock did a lot in a short space of time.

'Shocking referee'- Man United fans lament poor officiating after Arsenal draw

Manchester United fans were thoroughly displeased with the officiating in the clash against Arsenal after both sides shared the spoils.

The disappointing 1-1 draw leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a lot of work to do to turn the club’s form around.

Though no one is denying Arsenal’s equaliser was wrongfully given by VAR, United fans have wondered why their own side didn’t benefit from the technology.

Solskjaer will probably be more disappointed with his players’ inability to finish off chances with Scott McTominay missing a free header and Marcus Rashford scuffing a one vs one opportunity.

The Red Devils seemed to play a little too safe for anyone’s liking with many admitting the fixture was boring, turning their attentions towards the poor refereeing.

Perhaps one incident supporters are pointing out is when there was a handball in the Arsenal box that would’ve resulted in a penalty.

The Manchester United players called for it immediately though the referee was not convinced and VAR didn’t overrule him despite replays showing otherwise.

The referee himself was rather inconsistent with his calls as he failed to rightfully book players on either team.

United need some luck to go their way otherwise they face ending the season out of the European qualification spots entirely.

Player ratings: United drop more points, huge chance wasted

David de Gea 6 – Made a crucial double save in the first-half but perhaps went down to ground too early for Arsenal’s goal.

Ashley Young 5 – Arsenal had so much joy down the Englishman’s side all game. Struggled to hold a tight position and his crossing was poor.

Harry Maguire 6 – Played on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the equaliser but held the ball better than any other United defender.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Generally dependable with the ball at his feet but looked spooked whenever Aubameyang came at him.

Axel Tuanzebe 6 – Such a shame. Played superbly all game, holding off players smartly and contributing to build-up play, only to produce a horror pass for Arsenal’s equaliser.

Scott McTominay 6 – Played with his usual unbridled aggression and scored an excellent goal, but could have been crisper in his passing and missed a free header.

Paul Pogba 5 – Dipped in and out of the game, producing a couple of excellent searching passes but essentially playing a spectator role for too much of it.

Andreas Pereira 6 – Nearly ran past the whole Arsenal defence and scored in the first-half. Demonstrated some much-needed intelligence on the ball.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Never really felt like he was in the game. Gave plenty of effort but very little with the ball.

Daniel James 7 – Tried his absolute heart out, always looking to bomb past Callum Chambers and create inroads going forward. Without him, United would have no spark going forward.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Much like against West Ham United, Rashford simply looked off it. A mixture of physical rustiness and lack of confidence, perhaps. Gave his all, granted, but always looked to be struggling.

It’s Arsenal v Manchester United. This rivalry is no longer the peak of English football but it still carried special significance for both sets of fans.

This match, in particular, is of particular importance to the visitors.

The Gunners are travelling to Old Trafford looking for a first Premier League win since way back in 2006.

Abou Diaby scored the winner that day but there’s a feeling that this is Arsenal’s best chance of snatching three points for the first time in a long time.

Solskjaer turns to these three young stars to turn around Man United form

Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on three European prospects as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to restore the glory days to the club.

The Norwegian coach is already suffering from a lack of attacking options so it’s no surprise to see his focus is on that part of the field.

Fans have lamented United’s lack of replacement for the outgoing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez and it’s clear to see that decision backfired.

Solskjaer is likely to have been let down by the board after requesting a replacement but he’ll certainly amend those mistakes in January.

The winter transfer window is notoriously difficult to navigate and the Red Devils are obviously desperate so extortionate fees may end up happening.

Moussa Dembele, Jadon Sancho and James Maddison are all signings that’ll likely excite fans but getting those deals over the line will be difficult.

The two Englishman would probably rather wait to see where Manchester United end up in the table when the season ends to make a decision rather than risk their careers now.

Sancho is excelling in Germany and playing Champions League football while Maddison’s Leicester could make a break for the top four themselves if they continue their good form.

Serie A star responds to rumours linking him with Man United

Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic has revealed how close he got to signing for Manchester United during Jose Mourinho’s era.

The Croatian was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford with the Portuguese boss said to be incredibly keen on the transfer.

It was always rumours however with nothing official coming out until now with Perisic confirming there was interest.

United’s need for attacking reinforcements is still evident even now so it’s no surprise to see Mourinho wanted to sign someone even back then.

Fans criticised the interest as they believed a then close to 30 year old was not the answer to their woes, particularly after the issues with Alexis Sanchez.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United invested in a winger but it came in the form of young prospect Daniel James instead.

The dazzling Welshman has already won over supporters with his work-rate and recent goalscoring form.

It’s likely Solskjaer will attempt to sign another attacker this January and it’s expected the target will be of a similar ilk to James.

In the end United dodged a bullet of sorts by avoiding the signing of Perisic despite Mourinho’s wishes and it’s safe to say his transfer record was patchy himself.

Juan Mata: This Man Utd star is "like no player I've ever seen"

Juan Mata has spoken of how Aaron Wan-Bissaka is like no player he has ever seen at Manchester United.

The 21-year-old, following an excellent 2018-19 season at Crystal Palace, joined Man United for a fee of £50m over the summer.

Amid a poor start, Wan-Bissaka has been a consistently reliable defender, maintaining a solid defensive shape and producing superb tackles on the right-hand side.

Speaking in an interview with the Times, Mata said: “He’s very, very good in defensive duties, very good in tackling.

“I’ve never seen any player like him, he’s unbelievable. Even in training you think you’re past him and then he comes and takes the ball straight.

“He has very long legs! I can only see him improving. Like Anthony, he’s a shy, reserved guy but confident on the pitch.”

In pure defensive terms, Wan-Bissaka is genuinely top class. He’s like a walking textbook on how one should defend: body shape with and without the ball, the timing of challenges, tracking runners, closing down angles, forcing players down dead ends, winning loose balls, holding the optimal position in relation to the other three defenders. The Englishman has all of this down to a tee as if he had revised for it throughout the summer ahead of an important exam.

Tantalisingly, though, there is more that he can learn. Indeed, for all the plaudits that Wan-Bissaka gets for those perfectly timed lunge tackles, he will, in the long run, be better off figuring out a way to win the same amount of balls without having to go to ground. Attacking wise, he needs to develop more maturity with his decision making and execution. That will come in time.

What matters, I guess, is that at the age of 21, United have one hell of a player – and somebody who will only get better.

4-2-3-1: Solskjaer to name strongest possible XI for Arsenal clash

Manchester United face an enormous amount of pressure heading into Monday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Sitting in eighth position and following a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United, defeat to the Gunners would set in motion a spiral of chaos and doom among the club’s support.

To make matters even spicier, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot and probably Paul Pogba as well.

With that in mind, here is the starting XI that we think Solskjaer will put out against Unai Emery’s men.

Firstly, yes, I know – this is not a good lineup. It lacks zip in midfield, contains two attacking players badly out of form and two other attackers yet to make ten senior starts for the club.

And yes, there is Ashley Young, once again, somehow still actually quite important to this team, partnered by Scott McTominay, full of aggression and power but painfully devoid of the cutting passes necessary to unpick this Arsenal defence. The other four are okay, although Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire must improve from what we saw against West Ham – especially Andriy Yarmolenko’s goal.

In a way, though, it doesn’t matter. Remember that lineup against Arsenal in February 2016? Sometimes, when two banter clubs collide, the results can be, well, ‘banterous’. Both teams are capable of winning and losing this 4-0. It promises to be something you cannot take your eyes off.

Why Sanchez has already done more at Inter than he ever managed at Man Utd

Alexis Sanchez enjoyed a whirlwind start to life at Inter Milan following 18 months of sheer banality as a Manchester United player.

The Chilean, who has moved to the San Siro on a season-long loan, opened his Inter account in strange style, with Stefano Sensi smashing a shot which brushed off him and curved perfectly into the bottom corner.

His next goal was superb, buzzing around the box, springing forward at the perfect time to lift an effort over keeper Emil Audero.

One minute into the second half, Alexis was then brandished with a second yellow card for what was a truly blatant piece of theatrics in the box, capping off a truly incredible first start.

Indeed, Alexis only managed one goal in the Premier League for all of last season – a total he bested within 25 minutes at his new club.

For whatever reason, Alexis looked miles away from even thinking about scoring a goal when he was wearing red. It just seemed totally implausible, like flying a Cessna plane into a black hole.

Under new circumstances, though, the whole shape and feel suddenly changes, allowing for all sorts of possibilities.

Old Trafford, on the other hand, currently feels like the type of place where possibilities go to die a painful, slow death.

I was told I should change clubs- Man United star opens up over future

Manchester United star Juan Mata has insisted he didn’t choose the club because it was going to be an easy career move but rather because he simply wanted to be at the club.

Much has been made of the seemingly multiple stars currently at Old Trafford who don’t want to be there with Paul Pogba often used as an example.

Mata arrived right after Sir Alex Ferguson’s era ended with David Moyes signing him in the January transfer window of that season.

Louis van Gaal then came and converted the talented Spaniard into a playmaking right-winger to a decent effect.

However, Jose Mourinho arrived next and the rumours of Mata being sold immediately took off before anything even happened.

According to the Daily Mail, Mata said: “Even though I could have taken the easy road and thought ‘it is very difficult at this club in this moment and that’s it, I prefer to go somewhere else and take an easier challenge,’ if I had done that, I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself.

“So I know it’s not the greatest moment of the club but I prefer much more to be suffering these difficult moments hoping that, in the future, we can do something really nice and win and that that victory will overcome all the frustration we might have had.

“Some people tell me I signed for United at the wrong time but being at this club is very special. Since I was a kid, I saw this club winning. When the opportunity to come to United arrived, I had no doubts. I wanted to feel what it was to be a Manchester United player from inside.

“It was the moment in which there was a big change in everything and we are still there in that process. It has taken a few years and I’m here those years. It is still a privilege to be here.

“I wish it was in a time when we were winning Premier Leagues but I want to change what is happening. We are getting closer. There is no way this club is not going to come back to where it should be.

“Hopefully that will be with me because that is what I wish for more than anything else right now in my professional career. But if not, it will happen without me.

“There will be nothing that will make me happier than feeling that. I felt that deep happiness with the supporters by winning an important trophy. I wouldn’t change that for anything.

“If I get it, it would be incredible. If I don’t, I’ll be happy with myself for having tried until I could. I tried my best. Sometimes you don’t get what you hope for but at least I will have fulfilled that promise with myself of trying until I can to see this city celebrating in red.

David de Gea told me about the day they celebrated winning the league in Deansgate and I want to see that.

“I would take that over anything. Maybe that’s me being stubborn. I have people telling me it’s difficult, other clubs are doing well, that I should change clubs and not try the impossible. But what counts is that I will have tried until the end.”

Some would argue that end is sooner rather than later with Mata in the twilight of his career and seemingly struggling with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s method of football.

The former Valencia man isn’t pacy or a particularly direct player and so often appears to be slowing down the tempo.

Solskjaer has shown a preference for Jesse Lingard and Mason Greenwood, both players who have a decent amount of pace and take on their man consistently.

How Solskjaer plans to resolves Man United's transfer woes

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued his backroom rejig, turning his attentions to the scouting department in particular.

The club, the board in particular, have been heavily criticised not just for their footballing decisions but also for their inability to spot talent despite an overstocked scouting department.

United have spent close to the amount Manchester City with around £800m yet their fierce rivals are miles ahead of them, proving it’s not the amount spent but rather how it’s spent.

To make matters worse, despite all the spending, Solskjaer is still starting his own revolution, meaning even more spending is on it’s way.

The squad is also in overall terrible shape and lacking depth which has shown so far with the season overall being rather inconsistent.

According to the Sun, Solskjaer has appointed Red Devils’ scout Simon Wells, who will directly report to him after the club’s permission, as the man to personally look at his transfer targets.

This direct line could improve results in the transfer market though it would still all depend on the board approving signings.

It’s likely this new setup will end any conversation over a director of football being hired which is news that will probably upset a host of fans.

De Gea loses major ally after renewing Man United contract

Manchester United have confirmed that goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez has left the club, not long after renewing David de Gea‘s contract.

The sensational Spaniard appeared close to an exit himself with just a year left to his previous deal.

Juventus and PSG were believed to be ready to pounce as soon as January came around to sign him for free.

However, United didn’t allow that situation to develop and tied De Gea down to a long-term deal.

Alvarez has been at the club since 2016 and is believed to be close to the former Atletico Madrid man but their work relationship has come to an end.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in his own goalkeeping coach over the summer so it’s no surprise to see Alvarez leaving though it does make fans wonder whether it’s a move that’ll upset De Gea.

Some have argued the world class goalkeeper hasn’t been the same since Alvarez came in and so are looking forward to an upturn in form.

It’s safe to say De Gea hasn’t been at his best for a while now but most put it down to the negotiations in regards to his contract rather than poor coaching.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether Solskjaer’s decision pays off or not.

Confirmed: Barcelona made bid for this Man United star last summer

Manchester United star Victor Lindelof was closer to a Barcelona move than previously believed according to his agent Hasan Cetinkaya.

The Swede centre-back was linked with a potential move to Spain but many fans believed they were simply rumours to help him in negotiations over an extension.

However, Cetinkaya opens up over what happened last summer, detailing how the La Liga giants made Lindelof their first-choice signing.

United had other problems last summer, such as holding onto Paul Pogba and attempting to get Solskjaer’s revolution going.

Of course only three players were signed in the end, which merited it’s own criticism but it appears the club did well to hold onto Lindelof as well.

Lindelof never publicly spoke of a desire to leave and appears to be enjoying his time with the Red Devils so far.

He has just extended his contract so it is unlikely he’s going anywhere anytime soon but rejecting Barcelona a second time surely must be difficult.

If Manchester United fail to have a successful season this year as well then it could make a transfer even more possible as Lindelof enters the peak years of his career.

Perhaps the former Benfica man’s move to Barcelona could see Samuel Umtiti move in the other direction given the club’s previously reported interest in him.

Gallery: First clean sheet of the season for Chelsea - here's how we rated the Blues' players following their win over Brighton

Chelsea and Frank Lampard finally collected their long-awaited first clean sheet of the season as they comfortably beat Brighton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

A bright and enterprising start to the game should’ve been taken advantage of as Pedro, Ross Barkley and Marcos Alonso were all guilty of spurning good chances. By deploying Barkley and Mason Mount in the half-space between Brighton’s midfield and defence, the Blues were able to quickly turn over possession by intercepting wayward passes forced by the quick pressing of Tammy Abraham. Early on this tactic helped produce some great opportunities in behind but loose touches and poor decision making meant Chelsea were unable to make the breakthrough in the first half.

Sloppy play from both sides dictated much of the next 45 minutes, and Chelsea finally made use of their high press to induce Brighton into giving away a penalty. Mason Mount was the man to draw the foul, getting to a loose ball ahead of Adam Webster. Jorginho then made light work of the resulting penalty to put Chelsea into the lead and collect his first Premier League goal at Stamford Bridge.

Brighton enjoyed a brief spell in which they looked like they could earn an unlikely equaliser, striking the bar through a Dan Burns header, but as the game became stretched Willian struck on the break to double Chelsea’s lead. Substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi sprung forward with pace before releasing Willian into the area for the Brazilian to strike home via a heavy deflection.

Chelsea could’ve had more but will be glad to have finally gotten their first clean sheet of the season on top of a well deserved three points.

Man United fans fuming with Solskaer for making this decision vs. Rochdale

Manchester United fans have been left exasperated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to start Paul Pogba against Rochdale after it was revealed that the Frenchman is now a doubt for Monday’s meeting with Arsenal.

The midfielder had only just recovered from an ankle injury, making his first start since before the international break, and played 90 minutes against the League One side.

However, Solskjaer confirmed at a press conference on Friday that the 26-year-old’s ankle was swollen after picking up a fresh knock against Rochdale.

In response, a number of United fans have voiced anger at the manager for using Pogba in such a comparatively pointless game.

In a way, this reaction is justified.

Using Pogba against Rochdale was not wrong, but it should have been from the bench, or Solskjaer ought to have taken him off after about an hour.

To use Pogba for the full 90 minutes and refuse to take him off, despite the player picking up a fresh knock, is a decision which simply does not make any sense. Moreover, it could really cost United in a game which they simply have to win.

Solskjaer strongly hints that this fan favourite will start vs. Arsenal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has strongly hinted that Mason Greenwood will start for Manchester United against Arsenal on Monday.

The 17-year-old scored his second senior goal in as many games during the 1-1 draw with Rochdale, once again jinking into the box and beating the keeper with a superb low finish.

And with both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial sidelined through injury, there is an expectation that Greenwood will get another go against the Gunners.

Speaking about the matter at a press conference, Solskjaer noted that he had not decided yet but did seem to suggest that the teenager starting was likely.

We know how this goes: injury crisis, no options up front, big home game against Arsenal coming up – what do we do?

Just like in 2016, you throw in a hungry Mancunian lad with an eye for goal and you tell him to simply unleash himself, to get right in their faces, and see what happens.

More seriously, though, Greenwood’s finishes against Astana and Rochdale show that he is, for all the other parts from his game which can still improve, the club’s best finisher at this moment in time.

For that reason alone, he merits a spot in the starting XI.

Man United star 'desperate' to leave, January exit looks likely: report

Paul Pogba has once again been presented as ‘more desperate than ever’ to leave Manchester United next year, according to a report.

The Frenchman admitted publicly over the summer that he was desperate for a “new challenge” elsewhere following a frustrating 2018-19 campaign at Old Trafford.

Real Madrid were reportedly interested in signing Pogba, but United refused to budge on their £160m valuation of the midfielder.

According to Neil Custis from The Sun, the 26-year-old has made his mind up about seeking a move away over the January transfer window.

Pogba’s contract expires in 2021, which means that he could leave for a cheaper price should he wait until next summer to launch a fresh push for the Bernabeu.

The report, which obviously contains more inside information on the Pogba camp than it would be possible for any media outlet to actually procure, states that Solskjaer convinced Pogba to stay over the summer by promising him a central role in the team (maybe true), only for the midfielder to grow exasperated at United’s start to the 2019-20 campaign and resolve to depart in January (probably not true).

What is true, however, is that Pogba will attract a strong bid from Madrid next summer, and you suspect that his head will be turned.

4-3-3: How Solskjaer can beat Arsenal despite having six key players injured

Manchester United once again have a mounting injury list ahead of meeting Arsenal at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Monday night.

Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have all been confirmed as missing or huge doubts for the clash.

This once again means that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a decidedly barebones lineup to play with for what is a massive game against Unai Emery’s side.

Here is how we think United can best line up with the options at the Norwegian’s disposal.

Three in midfield will automatically give United a bit more midfield control than what they have managed recently, with Andreas Pereira leading the press from the front whilst Fred plays the Pogba role, feeding in balls behind.

That front three is perhaps not the most experienced, with Greenwood making what would only be his second Premier League start and James still a slightly unknown quality, but those two have been the club’s most potent goal-threats so far this term.

And over on the right is somebody who, while seemingly universally disliked at the moment, is being tipped by this author to do something special against Arsenal: Jesse Lingard.

Having scored twice against them last season, the Englishman may well have another big display in store.

Big injury blow for Man Utd, Solskjaer reveals Pogba suffered fresh injury vs Rochdale

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Paul Pogba suffered a fresh knock to his ankle after returning to action during Manchester United’s EFL Cup clash with Rochdale.

The Frenchman had not featured for the club since suffering an ankle injury during a 1-1 draw with Southampton prior to the international break.

Pogba returned to the starting XI against Rochdale, presumably to get match fitness ahead of Arsenal, and played an important part in Mason Greenwood’s goal.

However, the boss has revealed that a fresh knock on the ankle has caused it to swell, making Pogba a serious doubt to feature on Monday.

When it rains, it pours, I guess. United’s injury list is bad enough, with no Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford to bolster the attack against the Gunners. To lose the talisman, the spark, right after he returned from injury – that is what you call taking the p*ss.

Even if Pogba is not completely ruled out, you suspect that Solskjaer would be reluctant to expose his injured ankle to what promises to be a high-intensity affair. Another knock could leave Pogba sidelined for even longer.

Other midfielders, like Fred and Nemanja Matic, will need to step up in a big way.

Gallery: A Premier League debut for Chelsea as they face Brighton - Our predicted XI

Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are both in line to start Saturday’s match against Brighton after the pair single-handedly tore apart Grimsby’s defence in midweek.

Billy Gilmour also dazzled on and off the ball with some crisp passing play to break the lines and ease Chelsea’s transition play. The 18-year-old will now be eager to make the step up to the Premier League after making his first start under the lights at Stamford Bridge.

There are of course still question marks over the personnel Lampard will pick in defence, as he tries desperately to earn his first clean sheet of the season – only under Ruud Gullit have the Blues gone on a longer run without a clean sheet (16 games between September and December 1996).

Kurt Zouma was more impressive in attack than defence, scoring once and earning the penalty from which Pedro then scored but this came only after the Frenchman had been caught ball watching for Grimsby’s only goal of the game.

Injuries in key positions, especially at the back, will dictate much of Lampard’s decision making but the returns of James and Hudson-Odoi have now added some much-needed depth to Chelsea’s squad ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

It’s Arsenal v Manchester United, one of the most highly-anticipated fixtures for Gunners fans.

This promises to be a vital one for both sides with the Gunners keen to take advantage of the sorry situation at Old Trafford right now.

It’s the kind of fixture which Arsenal have often struggled in but for Emery, it’s a golden chance to turnaround this woeful away record against top-six sides.

Now, the club has confirmed its team news ahead of the fixture, providing an update on the current big injury layoff, Alexandre Lacazette.

The Gunners have confirmed that the Frenchman is continuing his rehabilitation from an ankle injury and that he is expected to return in October.

No return date has been set for Lacazette but Konstantinos Mavropanos is back in action and Emile Smith Rowe will return next week.

It’s a bit troubling for Arsenal. Alexandre Lacazette is a key player but this ongoing ankle injury is a little worrying. There’s a fear that this injury could go on for a while and the lack of a return date will have Arsenal fans worried.

The BBC’s David Ornstein has revealed that Arsenal have chosen Granit Xhaka to be their club captain.

Laurent Koscielny left the club two months and Arsenal have been without an official captain ever since.

Granit Xhaka has worn the armband for the majority of the time with Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Rob Holding carrying the burden in the meantime.

There were suggestions that the club’s official captain would be named this week and the BBC’s David Ornstein has reported as such.

The BBC journalist has claimed that Granit Xhaka is the new club captain with the vice-captaincy still up for debate between Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

We reported earlier in the week that the Gunners had held a blind ballot amongst its playing staff to decide the next club captain.

Well, it looks as if Xhaka was chosen ahead of the other options and will wear the armband from now on.

It’s not a surprise. Almost everyone expected Granit Xhaka to get the nod for the armband. Every report from inside the club suggests that Xhaka is a real leader behind the scenes and is looked upon with respect from his fellow players. It’s a fascinating situation because ask most fans and they will disagree.
