Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to use Diogo Dalot in a more advanced position at Manchester United next season, according to reports.
The 20-year-old, signed by Jose Mourinho for £19m last summer, had a mixed first campaign at Old Trafford, making just 16 Premier League appearances.
Solskjaer, towards the end of the campaign, handed Dalot license to play higher up the pitch as a supporting left-sided winger amid form and injury problems for Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard.
According to the Standard‘s James Robson, Solskjaer wants to use Dalot’s energy and power further up the pitch on a more regular basis next season.
The arrival of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka pushes Dalot down the full-back pecking order, with Luke Shaw – United’s player of the season – comfortably occupying the left-back role.
Dalot’s advances down the wing were a rare source of excitement for United fans last season. He notably adopted a winger role after coming on against Paris Saint Germain in March and performed superbly, his undying energy out wide earning Solskjaer’s team a last-minute penalty.
The Portuguese was not perfect last season but, like with any promising youngster, he needs minutes on the pitch. Playing him as a winger is therefore a pragmatic solution.
