Luke Shaw has pulled out of the England squad ahead of October internationals and returned to Manchester United after picking up a minor injury, the club has confirmed.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a superb start to the season at Old Trafford, deservedly winning the club’s ‘Player of the Month’ award twice in a row.
He earned a recall to the England side last month but was stretchered off against Spain having suffered a collision with Dani Carvajal.
And the club confirmed on their official website on Monday that Shaw had once again suffered an injury which will prevent him from representing his country this month.
You often get the sense that Shaw, put simply, has rotten luck when it comes to injuries, almost as if he were cursed. Never has he looked so ready to play for England and assert himself on the team. Once again, though, it was not to be.
Perhaps this will serve as a blessing in disguise from a United point of view. Shaw has played virtually every game over the last month and Mourinho will, no doubt, want his key players fresh ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge and a back-to-back fixtures against Juventus.
