Diogo Dalot has admitted that the first few months of his Manchester United career have “not been easy”.
The full-back, who only made eight senior appearances for Porto, was the club’s first signing of the summer, arriving for a fee of around £19m.
He is yet to feature having undergone surgery on his meniscus in May, training separately over pre-season, but could make his debut against Watford having played for the Reserves last week.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Dalot admitted that it had been tough sitting on the sidelines for the opening stages of his United career.
“It has not been easy,” he said.
“It has felt like a dream. You have to be prepared mentally for these things and I think I have done that. I have prepared for all the challenges I could face and I think I’m ready.
“I have had my friends and my family to help me. They are the reason I have come so far so quickly and the reason why I am here.”
For a 19-year-old who doesn’t speak English, the last place you want to be after joining United is on the treatment table, literally and figuratively separated from his teammates.
Then again, Mourinho does not sign players who aren’t mentally strong. And Dalot, after impressing against Stoke for the Under 23s on Friday, can now look forward to imposing himself as a United player.
