Chris Smalling has opened up about how Manchester United players worked on refining patterns of play in training ahead of their 2-0 win over Burnley on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho and his team were under enormous pressure having lost two of their opening three Premier League games prior to the meeting at Turf Moor.
But Man United were dominant throughout, taking control with a pair of goals from Romelu Lukaku in the first half before creating further opportunities after the break.
Speaking after the game, Smalling noted how he could see the work at Carrington during the week coming to fruition on the pitch.
“With us not having a game in the week, we’d been able to work on a lot of patterns of play and you could see them coming out and finishing with the goals, so we were happy with that,” he said.
United came up against a considerably weaker and tiring Burnley side but they were nonetheless ruthless throughout, sometimes even enthralling in their speed building up the pitch.
Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard were live wires, taking up positions between the lines and working the ball up the pitch quickly, while Paul Pogba further behind dictated the game with a series of pinpoint balls to Romelu Lukaku, who lead the line superbly.
You could see how United were building through the phases, using the pace and strength of Luke Shaw to maintain a sense of width throughout. It was the antithesis to what we saw at Brighton two weeks before, and put paid to the idea that Mourinho had lost the dressing room.
