Former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel has expressed his excitement at the prospect of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo return to Old Trafford in the Champions League this season.
Man United were pitted against Juventus – as well as Valencia and Young Boys – in the draw last week and will face the Serie A champions in back to back clashes, with Ronaldo coming back to the Theatre of Dreams on October 23 before the away fixture in Turin on November 7.
Ronaldo’s last and only return to Old Trafford came in the controversial 2-1 second leg defeat for United at Old Trafford in a last 16 at the hands of Real Madrid (then managed by Jose Mourinho) in 2012, during which the Portuguese forward scored the winner after Nani was erroneously sent off.
And Schmeichel is licking his lips at the prospect of another return to Old Trafford for Ronaldo, who is yet to open his account for the Old Lady.
“It’s incredible,” he said.
“Ronaldo was back at Old Trafford with Real Madrid. That didn’t go too well for Manchester United.
Hopefully it will be a different story next time, but it’s great to see him back.”
United fans have not been able to look forward to a night against a proper European heavyweight in the Champions League since Bayern Munich came to Old Trafford in 2013, with Nemanja Vidic scoring a memorable header and Alexander Buttner somehow pocketing Arjen Robben.
This will be a stern test against a team endowed with pedigree in this competition. Ronaldo will be the focus, of course, but Mourinho will be wary of the threat posed by the likes of Paolo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa going forward as well.
Not to mention their defence – perhaps the greatest in the whole of Europe.
