Manchester United are certainly interested in Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez according to former player Andy Ritchie despite Jose Mourinho’s recent comments.
The Portuguese manager refused to speak about players at other clubs due to respect for them but didn’t entirely rule out a move for the Chilean.
Sanchez has found himself in the middle of a tug-o-war between both Manchester clubs as they race to complete his signature ahead of their competitors.
Foreign clubs are free to offer the talented winger a contract if they wish to sign him in the summer but United are reportedly unwilling to wait until then.
English clubs normally have to wait until later to sign someone on a free contract but Mourinho is reported to attempt to avoid this by bidding for Alexis in the current January transfer window.
According to Inside Futbol, Ritchie said to MUTV: “A player of his [Sanchez] stature and nature, you have got to be interested. There is no doubt about that, the club are interested.
“It’s unethical to speak about other clubs’ players and the manager has always said that.
“He never speaks about targets during the season, but as a football club Sanchez is one of those players, they will say if they do become available, you have got to be looking at it.
“And as Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest, then they will be looking at it.”
Andy’s words are a little surprising given they were allowed to be said on the club’s official TV channel and it’s unlikely that Manchester United would’ve given clearance for it unless there was real interest.
As previously mentioned, Jose refused to speak on the rumour but did also admit that Alexis Sanchez was a quality player, exciting the club’s fans.
With the Portuguese manager publicly stating his intent to sign a winger since last summer, it could be that he’s found the perfect man for the job in the Arsenal player.
Stopping Manchester City from adding quality to their squad is surely an added bonus for Mourinho who is trying to close the gap between the two clubs.
