Jose Mourinho was impressed by the performances of young Manchester United duo Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay in his side’s 1-0 win against AFC Bournemouth.
With both named in the starting line-up, a rarity, pressure was on both to perform.
Shaw made his first start for Man United in 219 days last week against CSKA Moscow in a 2-1 win in the UEFA Champions League. He looked equally as determined and confident against Bournemouth.
McTominay was making his first Premier League start (his fourth in all competitions) and his eighth appearance for United.
“Very good, both,” was Mourinho’s judgement on the pair.
“Luke started slow but was improving and improving. It’s normal that physically he was feeling it. ”
Shaw was given a standing ovation from United’s home support at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, and was voted Man of the Match on Man Utd’s Twitter.
“The reaction of the crowd to him pleases me,” Mourinho said.
“Scott [McTominay] has played 90 mins in three different [competitions]. Why? Because in every match he was an adult.”
The Lancashire-born midfielder looked assured again against Bournemouth, playing alongside Nemanja Matic. He’s done fantastically since making his debut as a substitute for United away to Arsenal at the Emirates.
Mourinho, though praising Shaw, refused to reveal where he currently ranks amongst United’s left-backs.
“I’m not saying [he is] first or second choice, he’s an option,” Mourinho explained post-match. “His history is an incredible injury and more surgery at the end of last season.
“He needs competitive matches, we gave him that and he had some cramps so we had to change him.
“The standing ovation for him I liked, it helps the player.”
