Jose Mourinho has refused to extend his feud with Antonio Conte, noting that he now held the Italian in contempt and no longer wished for the story to continue.
The row began when Conte accused Mourinho of having ‘senile dementia’ in response to his claim that he didn’t need to act like a clown on the touchline.
Mourinho hit back at Conte in ruthless fashion, mentioning his match-fixing ban during his time in Italy, which caused the Chelsea boss to label him as a little man.
“No, I think when a person insults another you can expect a response,” he said.
“Or you can expect contempt,silence. The first time he insulted me I had a response, a response that I know that touched the point where he really feels hurt.
“Then he insulted me for a second time but now I change and now contempt and for me contempt means end of the story.”
Mourinho started this merry-go-round of superbly personal, nasty nonsense and now he is ending it – not in a blaze of further insults or an explosion of anger, but instead in a far more piercing way.
Just like when your mother said she wasn’t angry with you but rather disappointed, the 54-year-old has provided a deadpanning, truly Godfather-esque response to Conte’s outburst.
We should, as Capello warned, be fearful of an insult-mongering Mourinho, but we should take extra notice of the Special One descending into a pregnant, contempt-fuelled silence.
