Rio Ferdinand has labelled Manchester United’s second-half performance in a 1-0 defeat to FC Basel as unprofessional.
The Reds should have comfortably beaten their Swiss opposition in midweek in the UEFA Champions League to seal top spot in Group A, but lost out to an 89th-minute winner from Michael Lang.
Former-Man United man Ferdinand described the performance as unlike a typical one seen from a Jose Mourinho team, and said United should have shown more professionalism.
“It’s what you wouldn’t really associate with a Jose Mourinho team, lacking professionalism. In the second half, they lacked discipline,” Ferdinand said.
“It just wasn’t good enough in the second half.”
FC Basel had more than just one chance, they could have scored on a number of occasions in the second half.
United had dominated proceedings in the first period, but came out after the break looking poor. It’s not a game they should have lost, and it’s virtually irrelevant in their conquest for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, but it disrupts the flow of the side.
CSKA Moscow will need to beat United by a huge margin at Old Trafford in the final group game of Europe’s elite club competition to prevent United from going through as group leaders, let alone going through at all.
The brilliance of United in their first four games of the competition, routing CSKA 4-1 away from home and comfortably beating Basel 3-0 at home as well as triumphing over Benfica twice, allows them this slip-up, but Mourinho will not have been impressed.
