Owen Hargreaves hailed Marcos Rojo as the Argentine made his first start for Manchester United since April.
Rojo had been out with knee ligament damage since Man United’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final second-leg against Anderlecht, and played for the under-23s last week.
He was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Newcastle, but played the whole game for Jose Mourinho’s side in Wednesday evening’s poor 1-0 defeat to FC Basel.
Rojo impressed, despite the scoreline, and Hargreaves noted his performance in commentary.
“Considering how long he’s been out, Rojo, he’s looked sharp,” Hargreaves said. “Oberlin is so quick as well, and he’s matched him.”
Discussing how Rojo took a season or two to really settle and impress at United after his move from Sporting Lisbon, Hargreaves admitted he sees Rojo as a centre-back for the Reds.
“I think he’s best as a centre-back, a left-sided centre-back. He can play as a left-back, as he has done for Argentina but his best performances for United have been as a centre-back. He’s so commanding.”
Rojo at left-back was always questionable, but he quickly established himself as one of the club’s first choice defenders playing centrally last season, before picking up that injury late in the campaign.
His return is great news for United, and he looked ready to play regularly once more with his performance against Sporting, despite a very poor performance overall from the team.
