Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho blamed his side’s defeat to FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League on an inability to take chances.
The Reds had dominated first-half proceedings before an 89th-minute striker from Michael Lang gave Man United nothing to take back from Switzerland in Group A.
Mourinho’s side will qualify from their group, and will almost certainly finish top of it due to their excellence in their first four games in the competition, but it was an embarrassing second-half performance.
“We lost because in the first half we should be [winning] 5-0 but we couldn’t score after being so dominant and so dominant in such an easy way,” Mourinho told BT Sport.
“It looks for many periods of the first half that it was impossible not to win.”
“Experience tells when you lose so many chances you put yourself in this possible situation. I think in the majority of the second half the feeling everybody would be ok with 0-0 but then they score a goal in the last minute.”
United should never have lost the game. As Mourinho said, it looked like it was going to be a standard away-in-Europe performance for the Reds: professional, nothing too exciting, but a win with a second-half goal, or two.
Instead, United’s attitude changed after the break and they fell to a Basel side that they had comfortably dismantled 3-0 at Old Trafford a couple of months earlier. There’s still work to be done, because United lacked creatively greatly after Paul Pogba went off. He’s only just returned, and United are already relying on him.
