Manchester United star Harry Maguire believes playing alongside Victor Lindelof more frequently will see an improvement in the solidity of the defence.
The talented Englishman and his teammates have only managed to keep two clean-sheets this season with both coming against arguably their most difficult opponents.
United have played Chelsea, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leicester City so far, picking up eight points out of a possible 15.
The clean-sheets came against the Blues and the Foxes while draws were suffered against Wolves and 10-man Southampton.
The Red Devils even lost against Crystal Palace at home but the 1-0 win over Leicester City showed signs that they can improve defensively.
According to the club’s official website, Maguire: “You have to realise partnerships are built on playing games and we have only had five games.
“We will get better. I will understand him more and he will understand me more.
“There probably will be times when we can do better but we will continue to work hard on the training pitch and that is really important to build relationships around the pitch – not just me and Victor.
“It was important we all stuck at it. We knew it was going to be scrappy. As a team, we pressed really well and kept solid and, if we improve with the ball, we will improve as a team.”
The win over Leicester was arguably the best collective performance from both Maguire and Lindelof as they shackled the in-form Jamie Vardy superbly.
The pair appeared to be finally garnering some sort of understanding after criticisms over their performance, particularly against Crystal Palace.
Hopefully they can continue to improve and perhaps they should consider studying Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand’s partnership.
Maguire can be like the aggressive Serbian by pressing and winning the aerial duels while Lindelof can use his pace and ball-playing ability to getting round on the cover.
As good as the former Leicester star is, he’s not exactly the fasted and so their best attributes would compliment each other.
