Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta wants to win the Europa League so that Gary Cahill ends his Chelsea career on a high by winning another trophy.
The Blues face Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals of the competition over two legs, but the club captain’s fitness has come into question lately, casting doubt over his availability for the season’s remaining fixtures.
The veteran defender joined the Blues back in 2012 from Bolton Wanderers for a fee around £7.5 million. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the centre-back has helped Chelsea to two Premier League titles, two FA Cup trophies, one League Cup and both of the European honours.
If Cahill is to secure the eight and possibly final bit of silverware of his Chelsea career, then he is certain to go down as a club legend for his services over the past seven years.
The Englishman is still the captain of the club but fellow defensive teammate Azpilicueta has taken on the responsibility in his absence this term.
The Spanish international spoke to Standard Sport and indicated that he wants his side to reach and win the Europa League final in Baku for Cahill. He said:
Hopefully we will lift it together in Baku. I don’t know if he is going to stay or leave – obviously his contract ends in June.
But I hope we end the season on a high for Gary and the club because that means we end with some silverware.
Chelsea won the Europa League back in 2013 after beating Portuguese side Benfica 2-1 in the final at the Amsterdam Arena.
Both Cahill and Azpilicueta played a huge part in the victory that night and the Spaniard wants to win it again to honour their captain. He explained:
My first trophy was the Europa League – to get it back again would be great. Since Chelsea started in the competition back in September, I have been targeting the final and picking up this trophy.
I have been playing with Gary for seven years, we have been working together to help in every situation we could. It’s true that Gary has not been involved on the pith and I have been captain.
But he has won everything for the club, has experience playing in finals. His role off the pitch, in training, has been magnificent. He has been giving 100 per cent every day. It is something we all appreciate and he’s always been on the side of the team.
