Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta wants to win the Europa League so that Gary Cahill ends his Chelsea career on a high and the pair can lift the trophy together.
The Blues face Eintracht Frankfurt tonight in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash but Cahill is set to miss out once again due to an injury.
The veteran defender joined the Blues from Bolton back in 2012 from Bolton for a fee around £7 million. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the centre-back has helped Chelsea to two Premier League titles, two FA Cup trophies, one League Cup and both of the European trophies.
If Cahill was to add an eighth and final trophy to his Chelsea career then he is certain to go down as a legend for his services to the club over the past seven years.
The Englishman is still the captain of the club but fellow defensive teammate Azpilicueta has taken on the responsibility of the captaincy in his absence.
The Spanish international spoke to Standard Sport indicating he wants his side to reach and win the Europa League final in Baku.
Hopefully we will lift it together in Baku. I don’t know if he is going to stay or leave – obviously his contract ends in June. But I hope we end the season on a high for Gary and the club because that means we end with some silverware.
Chelsea won the Europa League back in 2013 after beating Portuguese side Benfica 2-1 in thee final at the Amsterdam Arena. Both Cahill and Azpilicueta played a huge part in the victory that night and the Spaniard wants to win it again to honour their captain. He explained:
I have been playing with Gary for seven years, we have been working together to help in every situation we could. It’s true that Gary has not been involved on the pith and I have been captain
But he has won everything for the club, has experience playing in finals. His role off the pitch, in training, has been magnificent. He has been giving 100 per cent every day. It is something we all appreciate and he’s always been on the side of the team
A result for Chelsea tonight would see them take an advantage back to London for the second leg next Thursday as the road to Baku nears an end.
