Manchester United fans are furious that the FA have charged Edinson Cavani with racism.
The alleged incident occurred on November 29, after Cavani scored two goals in United’s came back from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2.
After the game, he reposted an Instagram image from a friend, adding the caption ‘gracias negrito’. The phrase literally translates to ‘thanks little black person’ but is meant as a term of affection in the player’s home country of Uruguay. Cavani went on to delete the post and apologised.
But a statement from the FA said today: ‘Edinson Cavani has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3, in relation to a social media post on Thursday 29 November 2020.
‘It is alleged that, contrary to FA Rule E3.1, a comment posted on the Manchester United FC player’s Instagram page was insulting and/or abusive and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.
‘It is further alleged that the comment constitutes an “Aggravated Breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin.
The club has already issued a response, saying: ‘Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism … We note the FA decision today to charge Edinson Cavani for his social media reply to a friend’s message of congratulations, following the Southampton game.
‘Edinson and the club were clear that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind the message, which he deleted and apologised for, as soon as he was informed that it could have been misconstrued.
‘The player and the club will now consider the charge and respond to the FA accordingly.’
Many fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment with the decision and some even have suggested that the FA’s response is racist in itself. Comments have included:
‘The FA punishing Cavani for him expressing himself in his native tongue is a textbook example of racism,’ one fan said.

‘This is the imposition of English language standards on someone’s native way of speaking in a completely separate language with separate contexts. Common sense should have prevailed insofar as Cavani was clearly not, in the slightest, thinking of race when saying “negrito”.

‘Should @ECavaniOfficial been advised of racial connotations of different word meaning after signing… yes but that’s on the @fa and @ManUtd.. should Cavani be banned for speaking his own native tongue and saying something not even remotely racist.. no..’

‘So the FA is punishing Cavani for speaking his own language because a word he used in his own language sounds racist in a language he does not speak… that sounds pretty racist AGAINST Cavani to me.’

If Cavani is found guilty of the charge, he faces a minimum three match suspension. He has until January 4th to respond to the charge.
