David de Gea is happy to commit his long-term future to Manchester United but wants a significant pay-rise, according to sources at ESPN.
The club activated an extension clause on his current deal in November, keeping him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2020.
Talks over a new contract, which begun last year, have proven to be a protracted affair, with De Gea’s representatives adamant the Spaniard receives a wage-packet reflecting his importance to the club.
According to Rob Dawson, officials at Man United are nonetheless confident De Gea will commit his long term future to the club before the summer.
The 28-year-old is aware that his next deal will be his last big one, and as such wants to enter United’s top wage bracket, earning at least the same as Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba.
Real Madrid’s interest is no longer there after the Spanish side signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer, while doubts remain over Juventus’ capacity to add De Gea to their wage bill after acquiring Cristiano Ronaldo.
French champions Paris Saint Germain are an option De Gea has considered, but the Spaniard – importantly – is happy in Manchester, and appreciates the unyielding love he has received from United supporters – especially since his botched move to Madrid in 2015.
