Mauricio Pochettino, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Massimiliano Allegri, Zinedine Zidane and Gareth Southgate are the five managers being considered for the permanent position at Manchester United, according to reports.
Solskjaer has won the backing of many to take the reins permanently following a perfect first month during which he won six games in a row.
The most recent win came away against Tottenham Hotspur, and more notably Pochettino, who nonetheless remains the club’s primary candidate for the permanent role. Most supporters would say the Argentine is still their preferred man.
However, according to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson, there are three other candidates under consideration: Zidane, Allegri and Southgate.
The former of the aforementioned trio was touted to replace Jose Mourinho amid United’s nightmare start to the season, but talk of the Frenchman has since died down. It seems likely he will elect to manage in Italy or France instead.
Allegri, on the other hand, could be a possibility, with the Italian said to be interested in managing United. He is not a popular choice among the club’s support, however, with Solskjaer’s immediate success demonstrating emphatically that United’s next manager must understand the club’s culture intimately.
And with Southgate extremely unlikely to leave his post as England manager, it feels like it could be a two horse race between Pochettino and Solskjaer over the next few months.
