Victor Lindelof missed out on Sweden’s 1-0 win over South Korea in their opening game of the World Cup through illness.
The 23-year-old, who played every game for Sweden at Euro 2016 and featured heavily in qualifiers, was set to start the game in Novgorod.
But according to Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet, Lindelof was taken ill on Sunday and a decision was made to leave him out of the starting lineup against South Korea.
Pontus Jansson started in his place and performed solidly alongside Andreas Granqvist, who scored the winner from the spot in the second half.
Sweden would guarantee a place in the knockout phase with a win over Germany next Saturday. Lindelof, having just contracted an illness, will be expected to return to the starting XI for that game in Sochi.
A strong World Cup for Lindelof, who only managed to play a bit part role for Manchester United in his debut season at Old Trafford, would provide a vital injection of confidence into his game heading into the 2018/19 campaign.
Man United supporters, with the FA Cup final fresh in their minds, will desperately hope the Swede can put in displays against Germany and Mexico to convince Jose Mourinho to dispense with the partnership of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones once and for all.
