Chelsea are set to offer defender David Luiz a new contract as his current deal expires at the end of the season.
After a year on the sidelines, Luiz has found himself back in the action under new manager Maurizio Sarri and as such, Chelsea want to tie him down to a new deal so he can’t leave for free at the end of the season.
As per a report from Simon Johnson of the Evening Standard, the Blues want Luiz to sign a one-year extension on his existing deal, meaning he’ll be under contract at the club until the summer of 2020.
Luiz turns 32-years-old in April and as such, Chelsea’s policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over 30 comes into effect, hence the short-term offer.
The Brazilian has admitted that he would have left Chelsea in the summer had Antonio Conte remained in charge but he’s been rejuvenated under Sarri and as such, there’s a good chance that he’ll agree to the extension.
