Jose Mourinho has voiced doubts over Antonio Valencia‘s ability to stay fit for Manchester United over the 2018/19 season.
The Ecuadorian is now 33 and, ahead of his tenth season at Old Trafford, was officially handed the captaincy by Mourinho last week.
His calf injury just four minutes into Man United’s pre-season friendly with San Jose Earthquakes provided cause for concern over whether he would take any further part in the United States.
And Mourinho, speaking to ESPN, confirmed he wouldn’t risk Valencia in any of United’s upcoming International Champions Cup games.
“He’s injured,” he said. “We need to get used to it. Last season he was already in this kind of situation and probably this season we’re going to have more of that.”
“I don’t think he will be available to play any one of the three matches of the ICC. It’s not a moment to take risks. Antonio is a player that is not a young boy anymore. We have to take care of him and have him ready for the start of the season.”
The right back area was a problem position before Valencia got injured. It is now an area of massive concern: Diogo Dalot, just 19, won’t be fit until September and there are no guarantees he’ll have an easy time acclimatising to life at Old Trafford.
If he doesn’t, losing Mourinho’s trust in the process, while Valencia continues to suffer with his fitness, United are in serious trouble. All they’ll have left is Matteo Darmian, who is set to leave the club anyway, and youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
You could say the same for the left-back position. United are only one bad Ashley Young injury away from having only Luke Shaw – a player Mourinho doesn’t trust – as cover in that area.
Full-back was a position which needed a considerable overhaul. United haven’t done that. And Mourinho, as a result, looks set to suffer the consequences.
