Manchester United are moving closer to agreeing a new contract with Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera.
The former-Athletic Bilbao player has been at the club since Louis van Gaal signed him in 2014. He was one of a number of signings made under the Dutchman but one of the only ones who has remained an important player.
Herrera’s game time at Man United has decreased in the last couple of seasons, having been considered an important figure in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign in charge.
ESPN FC reports that United are now “edging closer” to a new contract for Herrera.
The 29-year-old will otherwise be allowed to talk with foreign clubs in January as his current contract in the north of England expires at the end of the season.
United reportedly held initial conversations with Herrera’s representatives before the recent international break and are now confident that he’ll commit his future to the club.
As the Spaniard is now 29, it’s unlikely he’ll be given a contract longer than three years or so as United have tended to give only short-term deals to older players.
