Ian Wright has hit out at Jose Mourinho for significantly hampering Marcus Rashford‘s confidence this season.
The youngster begun the 2017/18 campaign brightly, claiming nine goals and seven assists by mid-December, but has since encountered a dip in form.
He has been restricted to just nine starts since the turn of the year and his performance in the FA Cup final against Chelsea was indicative of a player desperately short in confidence.
And Wright, speaking earlier this week, noted that Mourinho has sucked the life out of a once ebullient forward.
“Eighteen months ago you could have put him in against Real or Barcelona and he’d have been outstanding, playing with flair and without fear,” he said.
“Now he looks like a kid fresh out of the academy who is desperately trying to impress. Anything, in fact, but the English jewel we’d unearthed who could take the World Cup by storm.”
That glorious sight of Rashford, the local lad who went from unknown youngster to the club’s hero in a matter of days, tearing past full-backs and eating up ground with reckless abandon, is starting to feel like a distant, nostalgic memory.
Mourinho, while technically improving results in his second season at Old Trafford, has stultified the thrilling attacking potential of Rashford (and Anthony Martial, for that matter) to accommodate the unpredictable Alexis Sanchez. Why he chose to sacrifice – perhaps indefinitely – the raw energy and confidence of Rashford and Martial on the left hand side, a formula which yielded so much success in the first half of the campaign and brought supporters such joy, remains a mystery.
His alternative plan, at least at the moment, can hardly be regarded as a better fit.
