Three players Jose Mourinho must start against Bristol City

Manchester United continue their defence of the League Cup with a quarter-final visit to Aston Gate for a meeting with Championship side Bristol City.

Jose Mourinho noted after the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion that he would make changes to his squad as Man United enter the heart of a busy December month.

But Bristol, currently third in the Championship, will be no pushovers having won four of their last five games.

With that in mind, here are three players who Mourinho must hand starts to on Wednesday night.

Luke Shaw

The 22-year-old has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent times, producing accomplished displays against CSKA Moscow and AFC Bournemouth, and some supporters were disappointed to see him unused at the Hawthorns on Sunday – a clear reflection of how well his displays have been received by supporters crying out for a proper left back at their club.

He is still working his way back to full match fitness and the visit to Ashton Gate provides Shaw with another chance to assert himself under his boss following a prolonged period on the sidelines.

Scott McTominay

Mourinho noted after the win over CSKA Moscow that he would give McTominay further opportunities in the first team, making a point of how he trusted the 20-year-old in midfield.

And you can see why. He looked wonderfully assured on the ball against Swansea City in the previous round and received his first Premier League start of the season last week. It only makes sense for the youngster to be given more minuted on the pitch against Bristol.

Paul Pogba

His absence hit hard against Manchester City and was noticeable even in wins over Bournemouth and West Brom. This is a player who serves as the creative brain of this United side and supporters will be delighted to see him return from suspension on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old’s sheer presence on the pitch ought to send a few chills down the spine of the home side and ought to prove the difference during what promises to be a feisty encounter.
