Manchester United’s legendary former captain Bryan Robson has called upon his former side’s players to show a more clinical edge in future matches.
The Red Devils are currently second in the Premier League table with 11 points separating them from fierce rivals Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho has often been criticised for being defensive or pragmatic but his players have scored 58 goals in 27 matches across all competitions this season.
United started the season brightly but were soon outpaced by Pep Guardiola’s City who have remained unbeaten so far.
Robson praised Mourinho for improving the team since joining the club but has pointed out that the player’s killer edge must get better.
According to Goal, Bryan said: “I don’t know what it is with the players at the moment because they did it against Arsenal – get off to a great start and then go on the back-foot and try and play a bit defensive rather than go for the killer goal.
“But like against West Brom at the weekend [in a 2-1 win], West Brom score and then all of a sudden it becomes a nervous last 10 minutes.
“So the lads have got to get that out of their system. You’ve got to keep pressing and doing the right things which gets you that lead in the first place.
“I’m sure the manager’s talking to the players about that and going for the jugular and making sure you win the game and are not hanging on.”
Manchester United’s top goal-scorers so far have been Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
Jose Mourinho called on Martial and Rashford last season to add goals to their game and the pair have both responded this time around.
Both players struggled somewhat with their end product during Mourinho’s first year in charge of the club but have certainly contributed to United’s good start to the campaign.
Marcus and Anthony have had to make do with competing with one another in order to get minutes on the pitch and have acted surprisingly mature and professional.
Neither player has complained about sitting on the bench or having to prove their worth and have instead both stepped up their game.
Playing out wide on the left flank, the two have maintained their levels of influence and have impressed when pushed up front to partner Romelu Lukaku in their natural positions.
