Chelsea continued their woeful form of late as a 10-man Blues side fell to a devastating 4-1 defeat to lowly Watford at Vicarage Road.
Wednesday’s humiliating defeat to Bournemouth should’ve been the kick up the backside this labouring Chelsea team needed so desperately in order to maintain their Champions League status, but straight from kick-off, no lessons were learnt as Watford pressed Antonio Conte’s men into gifting them possession. Unlike with Wednesday, however, Chelsea’s downfall began to take effect well before the second-half, with Tiemoue Bakayoko seeing red for two bookable offences with just half an hour played whilst Troy Deeney’s penalty just before half-time compounded an atrocious first-half showing.
The second-half saw a late Watford onslaught emphatically cancel out Eden Hazard’s 82nd-minute equaliser – a rasping drive into the corner. Daryl Jaanmat almost immediately restored the Hornet’s lead though when he weaved his way past two Chelsea defenders before firing past Thibaut Courtois with his weaker foot. Debutant Gerard Deulofeu wrapped up the points four minutes later, with substitute Roberto Pereyra adding a fourth in injury time.
Chelsea are now just one point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham in the race for a Champions League spot, whilst a win for Watford lifts them away from the relegation battle.
