Manchester United are planning to re-open contract talks with forward Anthony Martial.
The Times, a reputable source on the club, report that Man United hold a strong belief that Martial is one of their most talented attacking players, and the Reds have no interest in selling him this summer or in future.
That’s despite Juventus being reportedly keen to bring Martial to Turin following doubt being cast over the Frenchman’s future at Old Trafford with Alexis Sanchez’s arrival in January from Arsenal and no update on a new contract for Martial.
Contract talks first began in December, now three months ago, between Martial and United’s representatives. Manager Jose Mourinho is supposedly angered by the club’s failure to tie Martial down to a long-term deal.
There is no particular rush to avoid the striker being allowed to leave on a free transfer due to a clause in the 22-year-old’s deal that allows United to trigger a one-year extension. Martial’s current deal expires in 2019, but that option means it can be extended to 2020.
A rush, though, is created by a desire not to create a situation which leaves one of the country’s most exciting young attacking talents unhappy and looking to leave the club. A host of clubs would be desperate to sign Martial, including Tottenham Hotspur who showed an interest last summer, and European giants such as Juventus.
The Mirror, meanwhile, report that Martial will seek assurances over his role at the club.
