Manchester United will be willing to sell Sam Johnstone this summer, but only if their £6.5m asking price is met by one of his numerous potential suitors.
Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa are very keen on making Johnstone’s long-term stay at the club a permanent one this summer, but will be challenged by Premier League sides who have seen Johnstone’s quality.
Villa themselves could earn promotion this season under the leadership of Steve Bruce, and their position on bringing Johnstone in permanently will depend on the outcome of their season.
With Man United boss Jose Mourinho rating young Portuguese Joel Pereira, tipped to be the best goalkeeper of his generation from his country by the manager, Johnstone has no future at the club.
21-year-old Pereira is and will remain United’s third choice, despite Johnstone’s quality, which has earned him interest from many clubs.
United will demand £6.5m for a talented young goalkeeper, according to The Sun. Villa would like to be able to afford that, but must achieve promotion to England’s top flight to be able to, and they currently sit third in the table, four points off the automatic promotion spots.
Johnstone is clearly enjoying life at Villa Park, having spent more than a season on loan in Birmingham now. He is first-choice goalkeeper and will be guaranteed that, but if a Premier League opportunity arises, and Villa are not promoted, he may instead be keen to take up such a chance.
