Cristiano Ronaldo’s representatives have reportedly made Manchester United chiefs aware that he is prepared to fight for a return to the club.
Duncan Castles claims in the Daily Record that Ronaldo has instructed Real Madrid to set his asking price to €100m or less, with Man United as well as Paris Saint-Germain told of the news.
It’s claimed that Ronaldo is willing to “fight for a move” away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Ronaldo’s current contract, signed in November 2016, contains a rather symbolic €1billion release clause. The Portuguese’s representatives have told his current club that they want a commitment from president Florentino Perez that Ronaldo will be allowed to leave for one-tenth of that release clause.
United and PSG have been interested in signing the World Player of the Year for some years now, with the Reds having sold him in 2009 for a then-world record transfer.
President Perez is a far larger figure at Real Madrid than his equivalent at most English clubs. Ronaldo’s relationship with him is reportedly at it’s lowest.
Castles claims that relationship is so sour that Ronaldo no longer even wants to talk to Perez. As often with Cristiano, it may be down to money issues. The 32-year-old was unhappy that Perez didn’t improve his contract at the end of the season to increase in relative terms to football’s other top players.
Lionel Messi and Neymar both currently earn more than Ronaldo, who has just been crowned World Player of the Year for the fifth time after winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga title and FIFA Club World Cup with Los Blancos in 2017.
Ronaldo return rumours never cease to die down. Duncan Castles isn’t incredibly reliable, but does have links with Jose Mourinho and Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes.
At 32, do United fans still want Ronaldo back? It’s a question that must be asked. It’s hardly a long-term investment for a team that’s trying to build itself back up again, to create a new side that can challenge Europe’s best. Buying a 32-year-old who the team must be built around would be a non-sensical signing if it wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest players of all time.
